Honda Monkey motorcycle camping: a Quite Bad trial run

  • Ever since I bought my Honda Monkey in spring 2022, i've like the idea of motorcycle camping, but i've never gotten around to trying it - until now. The Monkey is itty bitty and doesn't have a lot of room to carry gear, so this week i set out to see just how much gear i can carry and just how disastrous it will be should i decide to take my motorcycle camping in the wilderness.

About me: I decided to jump on an opportunity to buy a school bus for $1000. After 2.5 years of building and a couple summers doing bus life, I sold the bus and began building a tiny house boat from scratch. My hope is that with a couple years of practice building under my belt, I can do a bit better of a job this time and build something that actually floats 🤞

You didn't actually lose the hammock. You wisely used it as a trail marker to find the road back.

Those square plastic milk boxes from Wallyworld work great for a basket on back of your bike !!

Two words come to mind for transporting luggage in your situation: Cargo Net. A small one would work well.

And some Rox Straps in there too. Also, a new offroad rider with an open-face helmet is not the right choice.

👍🏻😁 a plastic milk crate on back will hold your stuff better, and give you something to sit on while cooking over the camp fire 😁👍🏻

I would recommend a gym bag/duffel bag. You can shove your tent/sleeping bag/other gear into the gym bag and then just strap the bag onto your rack. It will keep everything from falling apart. It has worked for me!

A large backpack meant for hiking is the fix. Works like a charm. And tent is kinda mandatory if ticks and skeetos involved. Fun vid

A hammock can have a bug net. I full on hammock camp (with moto) and it is a complete system. One recommendation I would have for Emma is to get long hammock straps. Python straps work awesome.

A trial run is such a good idea 😊
You have 2 things on the rack, tie them separately to it with short cords & just use the bungees to stabilize it. Perhaps tie one of them on the fuel tank?

Bin your Bungees and get Rok Straps instead. They are much much better ( although expensive). And if you do this use them so that they are parallel to each other and not in a X pattern like you had with your Bungees.
Also there are racks available that fit on the front of the Bike which go over the headlight. This would give you extra carrying capacity. Love seeing you out on the Monkey. Carry on.😊

I once dropped my pack off the back of my snowmobile in the middle of Yellowstone. I had to backtrack 20 miles to find it. Yellowstone at sunset is amazing, Yellowstone in the dark as it gets colder and colder was not amazing. When I got to the exit gate the park ranger was nice and only gave me a warning for traveling in the park at night.

    I’ve been there.
I love watching people starting out moto camping. I’m not being nasty here. It’s just fun to watch. You’ll learn from mistakes and, trust me, never perfect it.
I always forget something or get something wrong. Innovation is part of the adventure.
    Enjoy your rides.

I had an old Triumph Tiger 650 back in the day. For saddlebags, I found a couple of olive drab daypacks at an Army/Navy surplus store. I just crisscrossed the shoulder harnesses over the rear wheel, worked like a champ. Looked nice and retro also.

Home Depot HDX milk crate, fasten it to your rack with u-bolts, I’d place the smaller items such as the hammock in the bottom because the sleeping bag strapped down atop would hold everything else in the basket.

You have 18k views right now. Pretty much killing it. If you want to continue down this path I’d start contacting some vendors and get some sponsorships for parts. T. rex racing makes some amazing parts for the monkey and there is a ton of great motocamping gear out there. You can probably upgrade that monkey for next to nothing. Motocamping content is definitely popular and I think you can kill it! And don’t doubt the little monkey and say it’s not a long distance adventure bike. Anything is an adventure bike, all you have to do is start the adventure. I’d totally be your motorcycle friend if I wasn’t on the other side of the country! Keep it up!

Weather/ temperatures has more to do with camping needs than anything else. I have been camping 66 of my 78 years. I have camped with a blanket, peanut and jelly sandwich, and Kool-Aid to a 32' fifth wheel and they all work for a certain season of life. In our thirties we pulled a pop up tent designed for motorcycles. I have had a basket on the front and saddle bags, or milk crate on a rear rack. (Always carry some nylon rope, with or without a tent.)

Bungee bad, tie down strap good. Even rope is better than stretchies. Hammock with only a sleeping bag = cold butt syndrome. Hammock with underquilt = warm and comfy. No tarp over the hammock... risky. Honestly you'd be better off with a cheap foam pad on the ground until you get hammock camping sorted out. Many learning experiences ahead! :D

I said it before and I mean it - you're a champion. Not only are you taking on a project that I honestly thought was impossible to do - but you're doing an amazing job at telling the story while succeeding. To the point that I think I might be building a boat this year. Like for real - alongside my ambulance build I think I could do it if I can bounce ideas off you and get advice. But my main work is as a wilderness/backpacking guide and photographer. So when you made your "packing list" for this trip I had both cringe and admiration. Cringe for the list but admiration for your ability to just go for it. That's rare. A transamerican motorcycle trip has definitely been on my list but now I've also this houseboat idea and some others to get done. Anyway. Looking forward to what's next.
