Great video. Me and my family and a dog travelled from England to Ukraine last year in snow 1417 miles and from Ukraine to Romania and back yesterday, and my L322 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography with 189k miles didn't miss a beat.

I replaced a rear wheel bearing on my Audi A7 bitdi last weekend and the ABS wheel speed sensor broke trying to get it out.. I ordered a new one online and in the 3 days I had 22 fault codes stored.. Everything from TPMS, stability control, ABS, Auto high beam, reduced brake servo function...a whole raft of issues... Once I fitted the new part and cleared the codes everything was OK

Love this video - Quite often go to Scotland, although Saab estate is my weapon of choice. Car issues - Sounds like earth strap/battery issue, they corrode super easily and throw up hundreds of codes where they need loads of power to operate with these functions, give the contact a wazz and I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you
@ Well we are planning an Easter road trip to Worthersee - If you’re aware of the old “festival” you’ll know why we go. There’s some amazing scenery, roads and food! You’re pretty local to me too, one of my other dad mates is in Inverness though 😂 Fingers crossed for the Range Rover, get that contact cleaned and see how you go 🤙🏼
I had four children and spent many hours travelling singing song now I have ten grandchildren singing 5 little monkeys. Don't worry about the warning lights probably a low voltage issue. I've almost covered 200k in mine and it's never let me down. Just like all expensive cars they just have to be well maintained.
If the fault happens again click on all of the fault codes in ONE of the sub-sections on Carly and see if a Canbus fault is shown - like a suspension module or ABS system. It may be a canbus fault caused by a faulty component causing the canbus to crash. There were some canbus errors on the first scan you did on the top levle screen, something like medium speed communication, so if you see a canbus fault in one of the sub modules that could confirm a component is crashing the canbus. If it is as I say, I don't know how to identify the faulty component, but I imagine the JLR forums will have people who will know more. The Canbus is a communication channel for the car's components and modules to talk to each other. A dodgy component can cause it to malfunction, and far as I understand it, cause errors all over the shop. Equally voltage errors in everything could show a dodgy earth strap, bad body control module/ECU or alternator problem. But Canbus throwing a wobbler, caused by a faulting sub component, would be my bet (I'm no Land Rover expert though).
Oh dear Ben you got a bashing from the motorway discipline police! 😅 I did notice it too but I wasn’t going to be so harsh! Nice video though, mate. Thanks for doing it. Your experience does epitomise the Range Rover quandary, but something else worth mentioning is that you covered a hell of a lot of miles with very young children. The RR helps to make that possible. I wonder if the girls would have been as happy in the X5 doing all those miles? The RR is a big open car with a great roof. Bright open and airy? Rookie mistake with the donkeys though! 😂. All the best Ben. Please let us know the outcome of all the gremlins!
I think your assessment of the doctors conduct in the 5 Little Monkeys song at 7:33 is spot on. Why aren’t more people talking about this clear negligence on the part of this so called “doctor” 🤣 Mega road trip video Ben! Hope you and the family had a lovely holiday. The Petrolhead Pickles were so well behaved! It’s such a nightmare when you get a warning light on a long journey with a fully loaded backseat 😬 I can’t fault BMW reliability. My old man and I took my 2 kids to Legoland in the summer holidays which is 366 mile round trip for us and we did it in his nearly new X3 because it’s been so reliable.
Hi Ben & family. Hope your all doing good. That was an awesome video. I can't believe all those trouble codes that came up. Hopefully everything will get sorted and will be alright. Now it's my turn to take a road trip. I'll be back home in UK on Monday for a week on vacation. My cousin moved from Dawlish, Devon. I have to help him with his new place. I have to drive from Devon to Dunnet, Scotland. It's about a 13 hour drive. Loved the video. Stay safe and take care.
It would be worth checking the condition of both the main and auxillary batteries because Range Rover fault alarms are very sensitive to voltages from these batteries.
For that many faults thrown up .. usually a low voltage across the canbus. Often the cause is the Earth connection in left front wheelarch - works when wet - intermittent when dry. Other one is battery .. anything older than 5 years is a roll of the dice, and finally, Alternator output - diode can fail and drain battery alarmingly quickly
My Audi A6 had a similar issue and none of the faults were real, it was a water issue with the wiring harness between the dash and the cars ECU. With so many different unconnected faults it sounds the same. Worth a look.
Great video and well done on going on such a long road trip with young children! My suggestion for a future road trip is green laning - nothing too adventurous, just some easy green lanes with great views!
I enjoyed the treatise on the 5 little monkeys. I’ve many memories of being mentally broken from pink fong songs on long trips when the kids were younger. Great vid as always.
It will be the compressor air dryer, possibly causing all those faults the dryer material degrades and absorbs water, and the filers get clogged and rust. I would also check the health of your battery.
With regards to all the faults that happened whilst on your holiday I would start with those open to the elements wiring connections you noticed whilst it was on the car lift as it’s possible some moisture may have got in there and caused an issue, inspect them, clean them up if needed and maybe try and make some sort of splash guard etc! Good luck 😊
It is safe to say that I considered purchasing this vehicle, but I will never do so. What a fantastic adventure! This time, bru, you succeeded, but man, that is a ticking time bomb.
Come down to Cornwall storm watching, it's amazing watching the waves when they come in... and you can compare the L405 to my late L322... I've just completed a ~500 mile round trip to the Classic Motor Show and back - one tank of diesel and no issues at all!
All those issues all of a sudden and also when you have the gateway module issue, it means something is wrong with power distribution throughout the vehicle. Most likely battery…
As a father of 3, can only say that you should take your kids on road trips as often as you can afford it. For me, these were the times of my life since becoming a parent. Kids love to travel, to explore, to experience new things. You don''t need to buy expensive new cars for that, just make sure that it is well maintained, reliable and comfy. We regularly do 2-4 k miles European tours in summer, with 10+ or 20+ years old cars, never had any issues and I'm not a mechanic, just a regular petrolhead. There are a lot of superb campsites across the continent, you can rent great bungalows or safari tents for an accessible price. If you love to drive and travel, just go for it. And there's nothing wrong with that Range :)
Carly is a double edged sword. Yeah it tells you about every issue but yeah it tells you about EVERY issue. For context I have never scanned a BMW over 10 years old that didn't have a load of faults. I reckon you're going to need to puit 2 or 3 grand into the range rover - even when new they need 2-3 grand a year to maintain them.
You showed which modules had faults, but you didn’t go in to the errors to see what they actually were. When you get that many errors in one go it’s usually due to modules not talking to each other over canbus, then every module registers a communication problem. Maybe due to a bad earth, which is a common fault on these.
Carly sends you down a maze you dont need. All the faults on that carly will be previous ones. Almost impossible to find out the real issue using it. Take it to a landy specialist and theyll diagnose it properly. Carly is not good for landrover
I appreciate your sharing your real world experience. Apart from obviously being amazing parents with wonderful pickles, the other take away was that the car didn’t leave you stranded. Maybe the L405 was just shocked at having to do some distance? Now it’s settled down, all will be well ❤.
Nice to meet you on Saturday at the NEC ... thanks great video and has made my mind up that my next car won't be a Range Rover !!! Love the car seat that can seat 4 kids and wish I'd known about them when my 4 lads was younger as it Limited me to 7 heaters 😪😪
For me, with kids, it's often been about exploring stuff on the way to or from holiday destinations. We have life membership of English Heritage which gets two adults and 6 children each free into EH sites. Castles, Abbey's, barns - always something to find and do . Followed up in the evenings with a round table "quiz" where we say our interesting fact of the day. So,top tip, drive less, stop more. Kids have them slept most of the journey. And to date, after 31 years of having kids, we have never broken down, not even a flat tyre.
This is exactly what me and my wife said after this trip. Next one we want to plan over a longer period with more stops and things to do :) I will hopefully make a more fun family trip video to watch too
Nice video! Enjoyed it and reminds me of the numerous road trips I did with my family while the children where growing up Priceless memories Love the Range Rover but have always avoided it due to its unreliability, so no surprise you had some issues but glad they did not ultimately ruin your road trips. JLR know they have a captive audience hence why they’ve made no effort in last few decades to sort the reliability issues. Their products are usually at the bottom of Reliability Studies but so long as demand is strong, JLR don’t and won’t bother sorting the reliability issues out
Ben, this was a lovely family road trip video - please resist falling in the TH-camr trap of clickbait though. I watched the whole video to the very end, long story short: you've lucked out on a £15k Rangie which didn't leave you stranded on a 1,000 mile road trip. Also, don't promise tired children stuff you can't deliver ;) Tips: Check the battery health both switched off and when running. Check the tyre pressures (if they're too far off the air suspension can have a hard time levelling). Check the sensors on all four corners, they may just be dirty or the electrical connections corroded. Buy a GAP IID tool, it's designed for Land Rover products and is far better than the Carly can ever hope to be, plus, no annual subs. I have no connection to GAP other than that I own one for my L322.
Click bait is something that promises one thing and doesn’t deliver it. The thumbnail and title sums this up 🤷♂️ I even say in the opening 60 seconds it got us there and back and anyone who doesn’t want to watch a family road trip can skip ahead. it’s a family road trip vlog not an episode of the grand tour… if people don’t want to see real world family road trips I won’t film them 👍
@@dadcars Ben, please don't take my comment as criticism. I'm a parent, I have subscribed to the channel from the DadB9 days because I'm interested in your journey generally. I love what you do and how you do it. However, the thumbnail strays, in my humble opinion, close to clickbait because you titled it "It broke on our family trip" with a picture of a red warning symbol front and centre and two of your pickles with their hands over their faces. The car didn't "break" or leave you stranded, it threw a bunch of advisory faults. Yes, they were concerning in the circumstances and I would have done what you did by pulling over to check them with my GAP reader. I'm not a TH-camr, I don't know how the algorithm works, but I would hate to see your channel go away from your normal forthright honest style in a chase for views or paid sponsors. 🙏
Had a similar issue on mine, the same sequence of faults showing on the dash. It fixed itself when turning it off for couple of mins and back on. The dealer said it needs an ABS sensor change, because of the filth that gets to it or pressure washing behind the wheels.
Half way trough...If I had to guess... one of the parking brake motors is craked and gets water in it ... When it rains and water gets in it will trow allot of faults . Also a fun fact .. the parking brake actuators are actually made by BMW :))
The Idea to use Add Blue with Diesels has been an absolute disaster. And the cost of paying for Add Blue and Diesel along with Diesel being more expensive than petrol be surprised if there are any savings with diesel vs petrol. I own a diesel just for context but in hindsight I wouldn't have bought it.
My wife's 107,000 range Rover sport threw an engine management light at Tebay. Was fine, drive rest of holiday and reset it when home. Perhaps it's something to do with Tebay.
I'd be checking your alternator. If your voltage isn't where it should be, this is typical of what happens. Especially in that weather with everything on. Stubbornly driving in the middle lane also pisses off the car 😉
I did a road trip over the summer with my wife and two daughters in an Audi Q3. Seven countries over three weeks, through the channel tunnel with our furthest point being Slovakia on the border of Hungary! Two theme parks and a spa resort 😊
With these cascade faults happen, you need a code reader that gives you time and distance when the fault(s) happen, then you can work out which one happened first, then you start your diagnosis there. I would guess a suspension level sensor or their calibration (do a full suspension height reset/calibration) these are used for everything from headlights, ABS, stability, driver aids etc Also check your battery and alternator, voltage issues drive the ecu’s and systems mad and throw loads of codes
LRs are very sensitive to their batteries and the 12v system. Had this on a Disco with lots of random electrical issues but nothing was actually wrong, changed the battery but didn’t fix it - was the alternator in the end, once replaced it was fine afterwards. May be worth checking it.
You don’t get fined unless it’s 10 sessions or more which is 5 whole days. Take mine out all the time 2 days before half term saves £100s just by flying out 2days before the schools finish. All we get is a letter stating it’s unauthorised leave and will be referred to the council. Council when you find there terms and conditions states 10sessions missed
I took you're advise, me the wife and my little one took my 2011 Range Rover 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography on a mammoth trip from Ukraine 🇺🇦 to UK 🇬🇧 and back !!
Sounds like the earth strap mounting point to me to get every fault going flag up! Good honest video though, and most importantly it didn't leave you and the family stranded at the side of the road!
At least if you decide to go with a big EV as a future Dadcar, you won't be phased by range anxiety. What with the RR providing you with a healthy dose of regular old anxiety on any big trip! Appreciated the screenshot at the start, haha.
This made me and the wife smile,we did a lot of trips to Scotland my dad lived there, not in a range rover but big cars with 3 kids in the back, now all grown men,it gave up a lot of memories, enjoy it, it's gone in a flash trust me
Forget the car - those girls are so cute! I’ve got a 2 year old and I’m all too familiar with 5 little monkeys oh and of course the wheels on the bus. I’ve actually resorted to providing the RR experience and just telling her that the Apple play is broken so I don’t have to listen to it! 😂
Thank you for bringing us along on a big family adventure. I did smile when your wife was the trouble-maker and trying to get you to drive through the puddles However, all I can say is wow some commenters really need to get a life. Ben takes the time to spend part of his family holiday literally working (a big ]'no-no' for me) and trying to show what a RR is like to live with, and sharing his families adventures ands all people care about is lane discipline from probably days, or even weeks ago. You all know it's well in the past right? Yes, lane discipline is important and it can be really annoying, even potentially dangerous but if that's what you you cared about after watching then you are very sad. You're also not the police or road enforcement, so it's none of your business...
Thanks man, it’s really nice seeing subscribers enjoying this one 😊 I personally think negative comments say more about the poster than the content they are moaning about 🤷♂️ I’ll make sure I get more shots in the middle lane on our next adventure 😂

Car issues - Sounds like earth strap/battery issue, they corrode super easily and throw up hundreds of codes where they need loads of power to operate with these functions, give the contact a wazz and I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you
Ah I’m glad subscribers are enjoying it :) I’d love to do more family road trips. Yeah a few have mentioned this could be the issue
@ Well we are planning an Easter road trip to Worthersee - If you’re aware of the old “festival” you’ll know why we go. There’s some amazing scenery, roads and food!
You’re pretty local to me too, one of my other dad mates is in Inverness though 😂
Fingers crossed for the Range Rover, get that contact cleaned and see how you go 🤙🏼
You certainly enjoy the middle lane 👍
I just loved this video - you and your family are so sweet - I just loved watching!
Ah thanks man :) I’m glad people enjoyed it, we will do more family road trip videos
Will do an update when we find out what it was :)
Tebay is great for a service station but from what I can gather a lot of people on the internet think it's on par with a Caribbean holiday.
😂👏
Your middle lane hogging is making my teeth itch
I think your assessment of the doctors conduct in the 5 Little Monkeys song at 7:33 is spot on. Why aren’t more people talking about this clear negligence on the part of this so called “doctor” 🤣
Mega road trip video Ben!
Ah man I love this comment 😂😂
I love how the mom n kids ignored his guff about ‘ooohhhh it may break!?!’ and they override him with “PUDDLE, PUDDLE, PUDDLE!” 😂
Also his “big reveal” about Teebay services was met with complete and utter silence by the family 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
😂🙈
Hi Ben & family. Hope your all doing good. That was an awesome video. I can't believe all those trouble codes that came up. Hopefully everything will get sorted and will be alright.
Now it's my turn to take a road trip. I'll be back home in UK on Monday for a week on vacation. My cousin moved from Dawlish, Devon. I have to help him with his new place. I have to drive from Devon to Dunnet, Scotland. It's about a 13 hour drive.
Loved the video. Stay safe and take care.
Awesome! Enjoy your road trip!! 👏
@dadcars I will Ben. Thank you.
@dadcars I will Ben. Thank you.
The five little monkey's deep dive was spot on haha
😂🙈
Brilliant video, your children are very well behaved, and welcome to the world of Land Rovers 😂❤
🙌😊
If I were you, I’d buy a Nissan Elgrand/Toyota Alphard. You’ll get low 20’s mpg but they never let you down
I had no idea you could put 4 car seats in the rear of a L405. Learn something new every day.
It’s a special seat :) check out the link in description 🙌
It would be worth checking the condition of both the main and auxillary batteries because Range Rover fault alarms are very sensitive to voltages from these batteries.
These errors are typical with a low voltage issue. Check the aux battery if there is one. Might not be the main battery.
Sounds like an earth fault or voltage issue, the earth strap sometimes rots and falls off. There's a few under the car.
I 💯 want to do this!
@@dadcars the Lakes has some great lanes if you were up for another trip north.
The guys allergic to lane 1. Im also looking to get a L405 to replace a pick up but nervous at how unreliable they can be. Good vid.
Shocking lane discipline dude!
My bmw x3 abs sensor packed up and caused 8 electrical issues which included steering and handbrake faults, modern electrics are terrible
Great video Ben. Enjoying your brilliant work.
🙌😊
I enjoyed the treatise on the 5 little monkeys.
I’ve many memories of being mentally broken from pink fong songs on long trips when the kids were younger.
Great vid as always.
Ping fong 🫣
@ it’s an actual crime against parents
It will be the compressor air dryer, possibly causing all those faults the dryer material degrades and absorbs water, and the filers get clogged and rust. I would also check the health of your battery.
With regards to all the faults that happened whilst on your holiday I would start with those open to the elements wiring connections you noticed whilst it was on the car lift as it’s possible some moisture may have got in there and caused an issue, inspect them, clean them up if needed and maybe try and make some sort of splash guard etc! Good luck 😊
Please keep us posted on the issues...well done....fun video!
I’ll do an update video soon :)
We love Cornwall and will do some road trips down there for sure :)
That Farm Shop is very similar to Gloucester Services
It’s the same company
We’re planning a European trip next year 🙌😊
Carly is a double edged sword.
Bad Earth would be my initial thoughts. Interesting to find out what it is
Lots of people suggesting a earth problem 👍
Carly sends you down a maze you dont need. All the faults on that carly will be previous ones. Almost impossible to find out the real issue using it. Take it to a landy specialist and theyll diagnose it properly. Carly is not good for landrover
I appreciate your sharing your real world experience. Apart from obviously being amazing parents with wonderful pickles, the other take away was that the car didn’t leave you stranded.
Maybe the L405 was just shocked at having to do some distance? Now it’s settled down, all will be well ❤.
Yeah I’ll get to the bottom of what it was, it was wonderful when working though 🙌
Nice to meet you on Saturday at the NEC ... thanks great video and has made my mind up that my next car won't be a Range Rover !!! Love the car seat that can seat 4 kids and wish I'd known about them when my 4 lads was younger as it Limited me to 7 heaters 😪😪
It was great talking to so many subscribers! 🙌😊 dads with 4 kids club 💪
I had an early Disco 5 with nearly 200k on it when I purchased it. I did a load more miles and it never missed a beat…
Next one we want to plan over a longer period with more stops and things to do :) I will hopefully make a more fun family trip video to watch too
Nice video!
Enjoyed it and reminds me of the numerous road trips I did with my family while the children where growing up
Priceless memories
Love the Range Rover but have always avoided it due to its unreliability, so no surprise you had some issues but glad they did not ultimately ruin your road trips.
JLR know they have a captive audience hence why they’ve made no effort in last few decades to sort the reliability issues. Their products are usually at the bottom of Reliability Studies but so long as demand is strong, JLR don’t and won’t bother sorting the reliability issues out
Glad you enjoyed it 😊🙌
If the problem is the BCM it controls all the relays so all the other faults may just be from that, maybe water ingress
How old is the Battery.? If on its way out, as you know the systems panic, it doesn’t take much. Just a thought 👍
Surely that’s a low voltage battery - had it on my old Freelander 2.. either that or some sort of electrical fault
Yeah lots of people suggesting this
Ben, this was a lovely family road trip video - please resist falling in the TH-camr trap of clickbait though.
I watched the whole video to the very end, long story short: you've lucked out on a £15k Rangie which didn't leave you stranded on a 1,000 mile road trip. Also, don't promise tired children stuff you can't deliver ;)
Tips:
Check the battery health both switched off and when running.
Did the BMW X5 feel comfortable and safe driving through the big puddles?
Had a similar issue on mine, the same sequence of faults showing on the dash. It fixed itself when turning it off for couple of mins and back on. The dealer said it needs an ABS sensor change, because of the filth that gets to it or pressure washing behind the wheels.
Half way trough...If I had to guess... one of the parking brake motors is craked and gets water in it ... When it rains and water gets in it will trow allot of faults . Also a fun fact .. the parking brake actuators are actually made by BMW :))
I’ve had diesels for years and will continue with diesels. The technology is much better. I get over 600 miles from a tank on my C220D…brilliant
Perhaps! 😅
Sounds awesome!!! 👏👏
did u happen to stop at the smiddy farm shop, if not the food is brilliant... lix toll garage per chance??
With these cascade faults happen, you need a code reader that gives you time and distance when the fault(s) happen, then you can work out which one happened first, then you start your diagnosis there.
I would guess a suspension level sensor or their calibration (do a full suspension height reset/calibration) these are used for everything from headlights, ABS, stability, driver aids etc
Also check your battery and alternator, voltage issues drive the ecu’s and systems mad and throw loads of codes
LRs are very sensitive to their batteries and the 12v system. Had this on a Disco with lots of random electrical issues but nothing was actually wrong, changed the battery but didn’t fix it - was the alternator in the end, once replaced it was fine afterwards. May be worth checking it.
Its an earth strap, had exactly the same issue.
This sounds promising and inexpensive!
Let’s pop that back…., to the inside lane! Sorry couldn’t resist 🤣 Great video, 👍
😂
You should try a European trip in the RR. Throw a tent in the back. Kids will love it and will make great content.
We’re planning one next year! 🙌
The way they word the letter is disgraceful 🧐
Great video considering a L405 but still undecided.
I took you're advise, me the wife and my little one took my 2011 Range Rover 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography on a mammoth trip from Ukraine 🇺🇦 to UK 🇬🇧 and back !!
Oh wow! How cool 👏
Adorable family & lovely vid!
Thanks man glad you enjoyed it :)
Great vid replace both the batteries in the boot End of probs. Lovely family lucky man.
Great video mate. I look forward to more like this.
Thanks for watching :) glad you enjoyed it!
99 problems and your 😂
Brilliant I had my Land Rover Range Rover two hours in the gearbox failure came on
Sounds like the earth strap mounting point to me to get every fault going flag up! Good honest video though, and most importantly it didn't leave you and the family stranded at the side of the road!
Yeah lots of people saying that 👍 I’ll find out what it was and let everyone know :) thanks man glad you enjoyed it 😊
Just wondering if driving in the heavy rain caused problems with the bear connections spotted underneath the car in you last vidio?
At least if you decide to go with a big EV as a future Dadcar, you won't be phased by range anxiety. What with the RR providing you with a healthy dose of regular old anxiety on any big trip!
Appreciated the screenshot at the start, haha.
What you did - To even think of a 1000mile road trip with 4 children is incredible in its own!
😅
This made me and the wife smile,we did a lot of trips to Scotland my dad lived there, not in a range rover but big cars with 3 kids in the back, now all grown men,it gave up a lot of memories, enjoy it, it's gone in a flash trust me
Awesome I love when my videos are enjoyable for people to watch with their other half too 🙌🙌 you’re 💯 right
Are you riding a toyota? How are you getting 33.3 mpg?
Forget the car - those girls are so cute! I’ve got a 2 year old and I’m all too familiar with 5 little monkeys oh and of course the wheels on the bus. I’ve actually resorted to providing the RR experience and just telling her that the Apple play is broken so I don’t have to listen to it! 😂
😂👏
Wonderful, excellant video, so good
So glad so many have enjoyed it :)
haha the cuddly toy gift shop.. We've all been there.. Though I don't have 4 so the cost is more manageable!
It’s not £5 for me it’s £20!!
Thank you for bringing us along on a big family adventure. I did smile when your wife was the trouble-maker and trying to get you to drive through the puddles
However, all I can say is wow some commenters really need to get a life. Ben takes the time to spend part of his family holiday literally working (a big ]'no-no' for me)
and trying to show what a RR is like to live with, and sharing his families adventures ands all people care about is lane discipline from probably days, or even weeks ago.
