I was offered $125,000 a year in the early 70s to drive in Alaska. That's starvation wages today.

Take as much nonperishable food as you can figure out how, or you'll spend all that big money right back out on cost of living.

I'd need to make double that to work in Alaska. I don't know but I've been told Eskimo 🐱 is mighty cold.

And no where to spend the cash, except expensive bars and restaurants. That’s a good thing!

A hamburger is $30, and rent is $3000 a month. You can have it all boys and girls.

Since I'm originally from there my best advice is get up there around mid to late April so then you'll have the summer to transition for the weather. IF you have never driven in extreme weather. But once you get use to below zero it's a piece of cake. FYI up there we call them hit and run trees everywhere else call them moose 😁👍

120-150k$ isn't the big money anymore.

Ive done heavy haul on Alaska. It's no joke. You have to be on alert with everything. Not a place for lazy drivers. Lazy and irresponsible drivers will die up there.

Don't believe the hype. Companies say they are going to pay crazy wages. Just to get drivers up here. What they don't tell you is they will work you 8 days and 80 hours rules. 20 hours on shift 15 hours driving. Sometimes chaining up 6 times a trip. They don't pay to chain up. Itis back breaking. Or stuck in Prudhoe for days during a blow. Inform yourselves.

Not a good deal. Cost of living is sky high. I can make that down here where the Cost Of Living is lower.

  • @Justin-Wood

did it for 3 months. money is good, but it's very difficult. 15 hour drives , you better be able to fix your own truck , chain up multiple times per shift, and constant shifting, etc

Not really worth it. I drive in the oil field in OH,WV, & PA and make $95-100k/yr. Mon-Fri, home every night. Cost of living is stupidly low around here as well.

And that’s a whole different kind of trucking! That kind of big cold comes with big problems. Fuel freezing is only the tip of the iceberg.

$150k in Alaska isn't worth it.
That's basically $14k more than in the lower 48 for alot of extra hassle.
Those workers in the oil fields are making $200k and sleep in shifts, but have company paid housing, food and medical.

only big box stores up here, Wal-Mart, Fred Meyer [Kroger] Costco, all a tad bit more expensive than their counterparts in the L48.
