Not gonna lie, the Johnny Test segment brings back memories, but the parodies portraying parents not understanding why kids enjoy the Pokémon franchise sounds like the most boomer thing I've ever heard, hence why this trope is tired, as there are adults who are fans of Pokémon nowadays.
YO!! I storyboarded the Big City Greens episode! I remember when the script was being written I begged them to put me and my board partner on that ep. I got to design most of the Galaxu themselves as well as the trainer and the logo. Starmadillo (the chesnaught/charizard thing) is voiced by anime VA Chris Sabat as well!
I'm actually the prop designer on Big City Greens and we had so much fun when we worked on the Galaxu episode. Almost everybody on our crew is obsessed with pokémon, and if you look closely at some of the props in the Galaxu episode we snuck in a ton of jokes references and one code. Throughout the rest of season 4 you will occasionally see little pokémon references in the backgrounds too.
@@rociorodea1992 no way! I know who your brother is! He and I talked with each other so much when we were figuring out all of the moves to put on the cards and stuff
Honestly, while I get the adults not getting it is a tired trope, as someone who hid my interest in Pokemon because my family would make fun of it every time it came up, it also kind of feels nice to feel like it wasnt something just I had to deal with.
Honestly the Billy & Mandy and Johnny Test episodes were my favorite Pokemon Parodies. Especially since The Billy and Mandy episode gave Yugioh/ Pokemon vibes, 2 of my favorite franchises. Also Johnny’s Pokemon really gave Shadow Lugia vibes
Hey TrueGreen i forgot your channel existed for many years but as soon as i saw your logo in my reccomended I immediately had memories flowing back & am glad you're still uploading.
Gotta give the Norm Show some points for the costume designs! The Butterfree’s wings move on their own and Charmander’s tail has REAL fire? That’s some dedication right there!
I enjoy all of your content Ron! This video made me think that an oppositely valence one might be cool too: one in which you look at occasions when Pokemon's influence is given a loving homage in shows made by fans. The archetypical example of this that jumps to mind is the defeating and bubbling of corrupted gems in Steven Universe (which is particularly obvious in the first episode with the monster whose gem looks like a pokeball). The show also alludes to it in things like Steven's golf video game. I do not know if there would be enough content on that for a video. But it is a thought!
I think it's just a trope in general that parents don't understand the latest trend that thier kids are into, it's not entirely exclusive to episodes based around Pokémon though considering when some of these episodes came out Pokémon was that big fad at the time that adults just couldn't understand, going as far as to demonize Pokémon as "A game from Satan himself." Same thing happened with other huge things like DnD and Video Games as a whole.
I love these occasional, somewhat out of left field videos so much. Not to say that I don’t like your normal art videos but this is interesting in a whole different way. It always makes me think “if he had a second channel of just this, I would binge it”. I’m not sure if they perform as well as fakemon videos but personally I like them.
The deer Lisa rides isn’t just based off of Princess Mononoki, but is also based off a legendary Deer Pokemon named Xerneas. There was also MAD that had spoofs of Pokemon as well. One of the episodes predicted Goh when the Ash in that episode was catching them all which is something Goh does.
My youngest son was very much into Pokémon and because he loved the game I learned how to play it too. I used to do informative talks at his schools to explain to the teachers and administrators just what Pokémon was and wasn’t and what exactly the game was all about✨Fun times✨He was good at catching Pokémon and I was good at training them up.
Big City Greens also has a Team Rocket parody in their episodes! One of the storyboard artists, Kiana Khansmith, is a huge Team Rocket fan and snuck them into one of the episodee!! Big City Greens and their crew are honestly so underrated.
The first Simpsons short you mention wasn't even an original thing. They just took a clip from a pre-existing episode about Homer becoming too distracted by his new smartphone and redubbed it to have him mention Pokémon names.
Fun fact about Big City Greens: One of the storyboard artists for the show, Kiana Mai, is a huge fan of Pokémon - and even a bigger fan of Team Rocket! Her love for Pokémon really shines through with the episodes she had worked on.
Kiana actually didn't work on this episode at all! But a lot of our design team as well as our supervising director are huge fans! I wrote and boarded the episode along with my board partner, and I love the chespin line so much that I make Starmadillo look like chesnaught haha.
Ninja Turtles is interesting because ninjas are well known to be a Japanese character archetype with a cultural origin. But since they’re usually drummed up to be pizza dudes from NYC sewers nobody cared? Or ninjas were always cool? Cause they ought to have been.
NGL, Johnny Test had the best parodies. Leave it to an actual Kid's WB show to parody an anime that station formerly aired, alongside another classic dubbed by 4kids: Yu-Gi-Oh. Also, gotta love that Tinymon got the GO treatment in the 2021 reboot (And by GO, I mean Pokemon GO.).
I was so hoping the Reboot ep would be featured here, but I understand it's exclusion since it had heavy influence from DragonBall as well. I loved all three as a kid, so I'll never forget that ep 😂
In big City Greens there was also an episode where Grandma was driving people around and she ended up unknowingly helping a criminal couple that resembled Jessie and James :D
Honestly i love how the two tinymon episodes went they are my favorite episodes of Johnny Test, its also funny how when Johnny and Dukey first meet Blast Ketchup the dude thinks Dukey is a Tinymon himself and Johnny tries to say "He isnt a tinymon he is My Mutt...Dog" then being the most dense dude ever Blast just thinks that MyMuttDog is Dukey's ACTUAL tinymon name xD and its nice that in the sequel episode that the devs actually put Dukey or "MyMuttDog" into the game and when Johnny's dad got sucked into the game Blast AGAIN takes the whole "im not a tinymon im [blank]" thing literally and assumes Johnny's dad is named "ImHisDad" and whats also nice is that during that final battle Dukey and Johnny's dad gets their own Evos in the game in Dukundra and Dadoomerang respectively its so funny and cool
Also worth pointing out that the South Park episode came out in 1999, just a couple years after the very first Pokémon games. So the whole “adults hate how much kids love it” is also not really a cliched trope at that point, it’s just a humorous exaggeration of how the adult writers felt at that time about Pokémania and parents reactions to it
Ahh. The Johnny test segment surely brings back memories. I do find it odd that the show has weridly consistent continuity for a kids show. Like the Handheld the titular character is playing tinymon on in the second tinymon episode is the same handheld he was obsessed over getting his hands on in a previous episode
I'd like to see you rate the design language of different creature-centric franchises like Digimon, Monster Hunter or Yokai Watch, or just other games in the monster-taming genre as someone who's so in touch with Pokemon's design philosophy and stuff.
I feel like that wouldn’t necessarily be fair since many of these franchises have very different design priorities and philosophy than Pokémon. Digimon for example is more rooted in technology and draws more heavily from popular culture and mythology than Pokémon with most being designed as individual characters rather than animal species meanwhile Monster Hunter is very naturalistic and far more brutal than Pokémon not to mention both have creatures like RareRaremon and Balahara who are far more purposely grotesque than even the Garbador line is allowed to get away with being
Don't forget about Press Start Adventures, where they introduced a Pokémon-inspired card game called...JACKAMO! I would love to see you rank something like that, though.
Cartoon Network's MAD did a few of these. There was PokeHarmony, a parody of the dating site eHarmony, and Pokemonsters Inc., where Ash tries to catch all the Pokemon in Monstropolis.
I don't know if it would ever be possible to track down, but in the late 90s/early 00s, the UK had its own collection of Pokemon Parody battles on a popular Saturday morning kid's show called SM:TV Live. Famous comedy duo, Ant and Dec would dress up and fight each other in some pretty creative, albeit inaccurate scenarios. These sketches would often bookend an episode that they would be airing that week and would sometimes even reference material from said episode. They were harmless, tongue-in-cheek fun; but it would be amazing if you could cover them on a potential Part Two. Edit: I just checked and it turns out there's tons of clips on TH-cam.
There is a Pokemon Parody in the HyperDimension Neptunia game series Called Pocketed Monstrosities released by Lowee (The Nintendo based Nation of the series)

Okay that Lugia expy from Johnny Test, isn't just based on Lugia, right? The way it's colored it looks like Shadow Lugia from Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness. Honestly, the Squirtle in the first Robot Chicken sketch does have a point. Why do pokemon typically say their species name instead of an actual animal noise?
I figured you could take this concept a step further and take the parody Pokemon that were made for the shows and try to redesign them as legit Fakemon.
Of course it took the legend himself Norm Macdonald (RIP) to respectfully cover a hugely successful and beloved franchise while still managing to inject thoughtful and witty humor.
As a European person, parents not understanding content made for children just because it's from a different country is so funny to me- Literally every single program I watched as a kid and enjoyed was either British, American, Japanese, or from one of the countries bordering to mine😂 I now sometimes watch shows made for adults, and those can be confusing (especially Chinese historical dramas), but pokemon is sooooo simple to understand~
Supernoobs has a reference too in the episode Noobs Just Wanna Have Fun. And guess what Supernoobs and Johnny Test is created by the same person so he's a Pokémon fan.
You got that right. I'm 33 years old now, and I still play Pokémon. That franchise is my die-hard favorite anyway! ❤
Those were my favorite episodes 😂 oh man, it's like a dream come true to get in the Pokémon game like that
Yes, but there are still adults and seniors who act this way.
