I've always felt the Yehudi Menuhin had the best trills of any violinist. They were not just among the fastest I have ever seen (miraculous when you consider how close to the fingerboard his fingers were), but also some of the cleanest, clearest, and most well-defined. Lovely, thanks for posting!
That's actually the very quality you need for very clear articulation. See striking the fingerboard hard will usually result in moments of improper contact resulting in the string going into a harmonic. This gives squeaky unclear articulation. Also the finger has to travel a much greater distance, so it slows you down. Yehudi Menuhin's left hand was a thing of beauty and astonishing capability - the double stop work was peerless too. It was his bow arm and hearing that let him down over time.
The fastest trill ( ever ?) was Menuhin's teacher's - Enesco. Menuhin is trying to imitate Enesco's technique and result is reasonable compared with the flat footers we here nowadays. Enesco's trill was the result of a particular technique and practice procedure and Menuhin wasn't quite fond of practicing. Find on YT Enesco's recording of the Beethoven's Romance to get an idea of his technique.
Hahaha! No. He had big technical problems after 1943. Really big. And it got much worse than this here. But already here, he could almost not do spiccato. Terrible bow technic.
