Okay, so I learned growing up that Chicano/a was a word created by Mexican Americans (I believe 60s/70s). Chicano/a meant it was a word that identified Mexicans (Mexican Americans) that were born in the United States with Mexican ancestry. Because! They didn’t feel like they were seen as Americans here in the U.S. but not seen as Mexicans in Mexico. So the word Chicano/a was created to give the Mexicans a word to identify that they love their Mexican heritage but are born in the U.S. which they love, as well.
The history of the word goes back to the turn of the 20th century. It was used by Mexican parents to describe their children and it first shows up in print in 1916. For many decades it had a negative connotation (again, by Mexicans parents describing their children as half Mexican, hence xicano). This was a word thrown around in the barrio amongst ourselves but by 1965-66, in the context of the Chicano movement, they took this word that we were all familiar with and redefined it because it represented our experiences. Since then, it has been associated with political activism.
Well that’s my people just been far away in freaking Alaska. 😂 Don’t worry about me I’ll find my way down there one day. The lost child up in the wilderness of the Americas but never forgotten my history.
