  • Join our Summer Science take on a movie screening with these historic expedition film reels that show scientific exploration in the early days. Today’s short film takes us to Tristan Da Cunha in 1961, as scientists explored the impact of the volcanic eruption on the geology and vegetation of the island. Intro from Brady Haran of Objectivity.

This is absolutely fascinating! I bet the dogs were pleased to see people arrive back on the island.

I remember this. The inhabitants came to Southampton. I was just 9 and saw all these people. After an explanation from adults as to what had happened I felt sorry for them.

"Tristan erupted in 1961" (I did?) Although the narration amuses me no end, a great video and a greatly informative Brady/Objectivity episode -thanks Royal Society!

Hopefully this last expedition left some food for the dogs and cats. Calves and poultry say thanks.

Snowflakes. I would have rather have had a documentary from 1961, ,
