My wife has never tried Chinese food in America before. I took her to the most average restaurant I could find to try the most popular dishes that the average American orders.
She bases her rating on authenticity and taste. We even got some local opinions.
Watch Winston's video where his wife, Sasha, tries Panda Express.

Clearly you've never eaten pizza in Italy. In Italy, pizza commonly has a short, fluffty crust, thin base and much less cheese than you're used to. The country which beat Italy for the best Italian Pizza for three years running? Australia. Feel free to look that up.

    • @IanOsmond
      @IanOsmond 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

I don't think that's fair: Italian-American cuisine is a distinct style from Italian cuisine. It's not better or worse, any more than Thai is better or worse than Vietnamese.
But the red-checked-tablecloth cuisine is a thing, perfected in Little Italy of New York and the North End of Boston -- meatballs, eggplant parmigiana, veal scallopini, chicken piccata, and so forth. These aren't tastes I associate with Italy, but they are ones I associate with Boston and New York. And they're authentic -- authentically American.

Hi only 3 years late to this vid, but as a Chinese American that has grown up living and working for my parents' Americanized Chinese food restaurant, I was often confused why "chow mien" was not actually noodles and why it was called "lo mien." I was later taught that this version of "chow mien" is something called "chop suey" and is very common in Cantonese dishes. With the Cantonese Chinese generally immigrating before other mainland Mandarin Chinese, "chow mien" became the Cantonese version while "lo mien" became the actual noodles. With that being said, if a someone walks in asking for 炒面,I usually clarify what exactly they want because it can get very confusing. Hope this was a little interesting to learn haha

Ya things get pushed sorta liek Cnaadian Bacon is just ham. I guess every culture kinda messes up other culture dishes on the whole be it ignorance limited supplies or even being able to obtain the food like do you think you will get fresh seafood in Kanas... not happening even with jets and that is super costly. Then again Look what she said about the beef. I know there is a whole industry that sells pre made dishes for Chinese restaurants or at least ingredients to mass sell hence how in the end the guy mentioned simular dishes you find all over.

TYVM, that is helpful. I had a theory but my theory leaned upon a chow mein made inn the Philippines sans noodles. With many thousands of Americans in that nation annually & the confusion caused by "Chinese" restaurants including dishes similar to Japanese tempura, Mongolian BBQ, Filipino lumpia, Japanese sushi & other non-Chinese East Asian foods there may be another reason also for the differences noticed by Beijing region Chinese origined people.

The point is stuff like this doesn't matter and anybody who thinks it does is autistic.
Food is based on geography more so than culture and outside of dishes that are made specifically for cultural tradition nobody should care or be offended if one culture alters the recipe of a dish to suit their citizens tastes more as ALL HUMANS DO IT.
This video just reminds me of buzzfeed videos where they try to shame westerners by saying we are dumb for thinking panda express and tacobell are authentic.
Newsflash: we don't, and nobody with a brain cares.

the best chinese food i've had was at a party in my apartment (usa). one of my chinese teachers brought everything and made gyoza (jhau dzu). but we has a lot of asian food stores that you could buy almost anything at. the main difference is the vegetables. i lived in japan for more than a decade, and basic vegetables like carrots, potatoes, etc. were TOTALLY different. you can't make food from another country when the basic ingredients aren't available...

I've called for Chow Mein when I was dorming in college and I get the Vegetable rice in gravy. They were run by Fujianese people.

Every American Chineses restaurant where I live serves that goopy slop chow mein like in the video. It's one of the most discusting things ive ever eaten. I grew up eating the La Choy chow mein with crispy noodles out of the can that's actually petty good, and oh man was I in for a surprise when I was served that sloppy crap. I almost threwup.

Chow Mein is pretty much noodles with vegetables and beef majority of the time. Mein pretty much means noodles. Honestly, the Chinese restaurant they went too probably just caters to the western audience. A lot of "Americanized" or "Canadian" Chinese restaurants will change dishes to cater to westerns. A lot of Chinese don't eat at mom and pop Chinese restaurants unless it is 100% authentic. I see 95% non-Chinese people at Chinese restaurants all the time.
That restaurant is probably just average walk-in takeout/diner. The owners of the restaurant have been there for years and probably do things how they feel like or have always been doing.

Chinese-American food is not technically Chinese food. It was developed in San Francisco using the "left over" vegetables and traditional Chinese spices for feeding workers in the poor working class areas of the city. It eventually caught on in other areas because it tastes so stinking good. My only experience eating in (mainland red) China was very different. Even Hong Kong food was different for the most part. I consider Chinese-American cuisine to be more American than Chinese. Developed in America by Chinese immigrants

People don't realize American Chinese food are often very regional. There are often unique Chinese food menu items that you can't find anywhere else. For example, St. Paul Sandwich(Egg Foo Young sandwich) in St. Louis, and Peking Ravioli(dumpling) in Boston. Let's face it, overwhelming majority of customers of American Chinese food are Americans, it make financial sense to modify the taste to satisfy those customers.
I'm from the Midwest and my family operate Chinese restaurants all over the US. The chow mein in the video is exactly how we will cook for our customers with pack of fried noodle. I've had customers from California very surprised by how different Midwest chow mein is from California.
