I think it's interesting to see how hard it can be to run a large server without some form of monetization. Even if I can't condone the p2w mechanics, that makes servers going in that direction a lot more understandable. That said, I think it would be alright to have memberships that give perks like having areas or villages named after you or something. Some kind of in-game perk that doesn't give you a material advantage, just bragging rights.
You need to remember that having only those types of things will result in not enough purchases, thus not enough revenue to pay for the thousands in costs per month

I had a friend who ran a server with loot boxes and other stuff you paid for, his reasoning for it was actually good because 100% of the proceeds from the purchases went to helping those pay off college loan debts and paying for lunches at the local elementary school. the loot boxes only gave you food and basic to advanced resources and there was a 24 hour limit to how many you could open
A niche that might actually be nice for you to fill would be interviews with server owners so players can get the other side of the story too. You probably don't have to dupe for it either.
I understand that some of these servers do struggle financially for the reasons mentioning the video, but that Mystery Box is an example of taking things way too far. I'm glad it got removed, thank you guys for pushing for the change.
I feel like the best way to distribute keys after you duped them would be to just to put them in chests all around the world at various location, you wouldn't be able to see the results but it would be a mess for the admins to regulate if it's literally everywhere

I have a server, and the only thing you can buy are that sometimes we have special events with actual cash prizes. Let's say 1 euro to enter, cash prize of 50. Usually the money given and earned are around the same, but its really fun and it doesn't ruin the server for others
This owner is actually a G. We all know that running servers with no IRL payment methods is just a cash pit and doomed to fail. So huge props for removing the most prolific version of gambling, and having the decency to sit and chat with you guys about it. Mad respect
It is so hard to find a decent server that doesn't have some degree of P2W, to the point I don't even try anymore. I either do singleplayer or host small whitelist servers from a spare laptop for friends. I don't have any problem with cosmetic-only items being sold for a few dollars to help with server costs, but the moment that that one can in anyway turn IRL money into something advantageous in-game, it is a deal-breaker to me. It is only worse when the things they can buy are unattainable by other means, or breaking gamemodes, such as offering /fly for people in a survival game.
The fact I play zedar like 24/7 makes me suprised they had a time like this, im happy they removed it though, it still has keys but they are not really over overpowered
Imagine if you duped a bunch of items, hid them, and then distributed them about a month later so if they do a rollback, then you could just do it again.
People have done this before, I always feel like it would be the funniest solution haha Avoids patches too, and lots of hidden stashes across a while is hard to break completely. I've always wondered what a full force long con would look like, only dropping a handful of duped resources at a time, not enough to raise alarm, but enough to slowly spike the economy. It would be slow and natural feeling but would still be problematic It just would take ages. Its a lot of work
as an og on that server who hasn't been on in a very long while (i joined around when the server just started with only the survival world available) i was very sad that they have added so many pay-to-win features honestly and have stopped playing at all pretty much because of it
fun fact: quite a few countries have implemented laws relating to digital gambling, and the complete lack of transparency on the mystery crate I think runs it afowl of Dutch, Belgian, and UK gambling laws.
As fun as some P2W servers can be as a free player, I LOVE seeing the economy of a P2W getting crushed. Glad to see it make a change though, hopefully not the last one. Sure, still P2W, but less so without a mystery crate. Hope to see some things about some P2W servers I've played once someday!

Some of these kids are gonna grow up and have gambling addictions. It's servers like these that are causing it, hats off to the owner levelling with you on your request and great job coming up with a way to thwart the lower ranks that would have solved the issue by banning you and moving on.
Only one working as of now, i tested it in some servers 1. Get your desired items on a shulker box 2. ALT + F4 the game WHILE on the shulker box menu 3. Go back to the desired server (don't forget to set your fps at 20 to glitch it out accurately) 4. Shit your pants aggressively while screaming "SKIBIDI DOP DOP DOP YES YES" ontop of the sink 5. Wake up in the adoption center
Given that there's two owners and one of them is chill and the other one named the whole server after themselves we can probably guess their roles in running the server and how the dynamic between the two plays out
For everyone asking how hard it is to run a server like this: It isn't hard at all when you have a team of staff members doing all the work for you. The hard part is just keeping it up. However, I've ran servers before and never had to depend on donations to keep it up. Servers that use donations as the sole way to keep the server running are the ones causing the issues. They have no interest in making a game people want to play. They only want money. Servers like this are the ones that know they need the money to run, but can get the money from different sources than just gambling and P2W. The moment you use either of those to run a server is the moment your server means nothing but money. If you as the owner can't run the server with what you make, that's the problem. You're trying to run a server that's larger than you can handle. You don't need thousands upon thousands of player slots, which is the primary cause of high prices on these servers. The second cause is the amount of things you're putting into it. If you're loading up your server storage and memory with plugins and such to the point where you need to keep upping the amount, you're being dumb. At the end of the day, running a server is more about running what you can over running what you want. If you can't monetarily support what you *want* to run, you need to settle for what you *can* run until you can afford to increase it. Expecting donations to be the sole way of the server running is absurd. You are expecting the players to pay for YOUR server. Donations are optional, expecting them to be mandatory to keep running doesn't work.
Have you thought about duping on a P2W server and leaving the items on it for a week or two so it gets stuck in the back up build and impossible to sort with server roll backs
How to make a non pay to win and fair crates system (serious): Make a crate with no RNG, it just gives you the items inside. all of them. Make it so you cant buy ANYTHING that can allow you to open more faster Make the keys for it craftable, Maybe just a tad expensive like 2 a diamond blocks and a tripwire hook Done.
Me and a friend had a small server. We also had a crate system like this. Not as pay2win as this, but you could get some advantages. Might be morally questionable, but it was the only way to make money and maintain the server. We also had ranks, but the crates were way more profitable. We never actually wrote black numbers, but the crates helped us, to run the server a bit longer.
This is the best server owner reaction I've ever seen. As a server owner myself, I'd never even do such a thing though. My server is invite-only but completely free. I only take voluntary donations from my players and 100% of the money goes to server upgrades.
that would be a great topic to cover, finding the funds to keep a server up. wouldn't have to be directly related to minecraft, as a lot of games that have community servers need to find ways to keep their servers running.
I actually bought the vip rank on there server and then played a lot it was fun quite like 3 months ago but started playing a month after you did this.
I used to play on that server. I can tell you, it is a dollar store version of SMP Earth and Lifesteal (much like any other), so it doesn't make a dime of a difference
Honestly idk how. But I'd somehow make a system where those who pay can only attack other's who have also paid by using a tag system & same for not being able to go into non paid zones. One solves the problem of players having an advantage over those who don't pay & the other protects either zones or claimed house's by those who don't have the tag for when you buy something.
If you have to rely on loot boxes to keep your server open, then you need to find another line of work instead of exploiting kids for their money. It's why I hate things like Ultimate Team in sports games. They force the devs to focus on nothing but those modes and letting all the other modes to go untouched for years. I'm so glad you were able to get this server to remove their lootboxes. Microsoft and Mojang shouldn't allow these things to exist to begin with, but I'm sure they get some kind of cut behind the curtain which is why they are allowed to be accessed. Keep up the work trying to take these servers down.
omg i actually play zedarmc to "borrow" kits from peoples bases. i remember seeing thedupertrooper player head at spawn and i was so confused. nice to see some servers actually taking action properly now
If you've taken the time to properly optimize Minecraft (like using Paper, which they're obviously using) the performance demands per-user are pretty easily overcome. A 100 user server with all the usual anti-cheat can be run from home on an old Dell Precision T with a 100mbit internet connection, a $5 donation every week can pay the server's power cost in most urban cities, and the rest can be handled alongside the usual expenses of life. Ironically, what really costs is supporting and maintaining the P2W features between minecraft updates so "donators" don't loose their "perks" between updates, as well as the fees involved in having a payment processor handle your "donations".
I love how if you were to dupe these into oblivion, think hundreds of double chests, you would technically have a net worth of over $1,000,000 in real life. Funny that.
I feel like it would actually be super easy to make a server just... not be pay to win, with monetization through something like a patreon to get early access, test stuff, cosmetics, etc, and make way more than p2w ones would

I'd be really curious to hear your ideas on *good* ways to monetize and support a minecraft server without having to rely on pay-to-win tactics like ambiguous loot crates.

The owner is Chxrlie aka Glenn MC - he originally made a p2w server called melon then sold it, made another server called skycube which was a scam, money grab and go and now he made supersmp which has a sale since the day it opened he clearly hasnt learned from the other 2 p2w servers he made and needs a lesson
I have a server, and the only thing you can buy are that sometimes we have special events with actual cash prizes. Let's say 1 euro to enter, cash prize of 50. Usually the money given and earned are around the same, but its really fun and it doesn't ruin the server for others

It is so hard to find a decent server that doesn't have some degree of P2W, to the point I don't even try anymore. I either do singleplayer or host small whitelist servers from a spare laptop for friends.
I don't have any problem with cosmetic-only items being sold for a few dollars to help with server costs, but the moment that that one can in anyway turn IRL money into something advantageous in-game, it is a deal-breaker to me. It is only worse when the things they can buy are unattainable by other means, or breaking gamemodes, such as offering /fly for people in a survival game.
owners need to understand the problem isn't in making money, it's the methods they go about using and how predatory and exploitative it is

Imagine if you duped a bunch of items, hid them, and then distributed them about a month later so if they do a rollback, then you could just do it again.

Avoids patches too, and lots of hidden stashes across a while is hard to break completely. I've always wondered what a full force long con would look like, only dropping a handful of duped resources at a time, not enough to raise alarm, but enough to slowly spike the economy. It would be slow and natural feeling but would still be problematic

as an og on that server who hasn't been on in a very long while (i joined around when the server just started with only the survival world available) i was very sad that they have added so many pay-to-win features honestly and have stopped playing at all pretty much because of it
you need to dupe on this server again they got back into p2w crates, each crate costing 20$
fun fact: quite a few countries have implemented laws relating to digital gambling, and the complete lack of transparency on the mystery crate I think runs it afowl of Dutch, Belgian, and UK gambling laws.

As fun as some P2W servers can be as a free player, I LOVE seeing the economy of a P2W getting crushed. Glad to see it make a change though, hopefully not the last one. Sure, still P2W, but less so without a mystery crate. Hope to see some things about some P2W servers I've played once someday!
If your server can't stay afloat without p2w, it's not a viable server. It's not an excuse to add p2w.

Some of these kids are gonna grow up and have gambling addictions. It's servers like these that are causing it, hats off to the owner levelling with you on your request and great job coming up with a way to thwart the lower ranks that would have solved the issue by banning you and moving on.

Only one working as of now, i tested it in some servers
1. Get your desired items on a shulker box
2. ALT + F4 the game WHILE on the shulker box menu
3. Go back to the desired server (don't forget to set your fps at 20 to glitch it out accurately)
4. Shit your pants aggressively while screaming "SKIBIDI DOP DOP DOP YES YES" ontop of the sink
5. Wake up in the adoption center

Given that there's two owners and one of them is chill and the other one named the whole server after themselves we can probably guess their roles in running the server and how the dynamic between the two plays out
Not a very fair comparison, zedar had a youtube channel/tiktok and his name was well known, it made sense for him to name the server after himself.

For everyone asking how hard it is to run a server like this:
It isn't hard at all when you have a team of staff members doing all the work for you. The hard part is just keeping it up. However, I've ran servers before and never had to depend on donations to keep it up. Servers that use donations as the sole way to keep the server running are the ones causing the issues. They have no interest in making a game people want to play. They only want money. Servers like this are the ones that know they need the money to run, but can get the money from different sources than just gambling and P2W.
The moment you use either of those to run a server is the moment your server means nothing but money. If you as the owner can't run the server with what you make, that's the problem. You're trying to run a server that's larger than you can handle. You don't need thousands upon thousands of player slots, which is the primary cause of high prices on these servers. The second cause is the amount of things you're putting into it. If you're loading up your server storage and memory with plugins and such to the point where you need to keep upping the amount, you're being dumb.
At the end of the day, running a server is more about running what you can over running what you want. If you can't monetarily support what you *want* to run, you need to settle for what you *can* run until you can afford to increase it. Expecting donations to be the sole way of the server running is absurd. You are expecting the players to pay for YOUR server. Donations are optional, expecting them to be mandatory to keep running doesn't work.
Have you thought about duping on a P2W server and leaving the items on it for a week or two so it gets stuck in the back up build and impossible to sort with server roll backs

How to make a non pay to win and fair crates system (serious):
Make a crate with no RNG, it just gives you the items inside. all of them.
Make it so you cant buy ANYTHING that can allow you to open more faster
Make the keys for it craftable, Maybe just a tad expensive like 2 a diamond blocks and a tripwire hook

Me and a friend had a small server. We also had a crate system like this. Not as pay2win as this, but you could get some advantages. Might be morally questionable, but it was the only way to make money and maintain the server. We also had ranks, but the crates were way more profitable. We never actually wrote black numbers, but the crates helped us, to run the server a bit longer.
This is the best server owner reaction I've ever seen. As a server owner myself, I'd never even do such a thing though. My server is invite-only but completely free. I only take voluntary donations from my players and 100% of the money goes to server upgrades.
that would be a great topic to cover, finding the funds to keep a server up. wouldn't have to be directly related to minecraft, as a lot of games that have community servers need to find ways to keep their servers running.

I actually bought the vip rank on there server and then played a lot it was fun quite like 3 months ago but started playing a month after you did this.
I used to play on that server. I can tell you, it is a dollar store version of SMP Earth and Lifesteal (much like any other), so it doesn't make a dime of a difference

Honestly idk how. But I'd somehow make a system where those who pay can only attack other's who have also paid by using a tag system & same for not being able to go into non paid zones.
One solves the problem of players having an advantage over those who don't pay & the other protects either zones or claimed house's by those who don't have the tag for when you buy something.
If you have to rely on loot boxes to keep your server open, then you need to find another line of work instead of exploiting kids for their money. It's why I hate things like Ultimate Team in sports games. They force the devs to focus on nothing but those modes and letting all the other modes to go untouched for years. I'm so glad you were able to get this server to remove their lootboxes. Microsoft and Mojang shouldn't allow these things to exist to begin with, but I'm sure they get some kind of cut behind the curtain which is why they are allowed to be accessed.

omg i actually play zedarmc to "borrow" kits from peoples bases. i remember seeing thedupertrooper player head at spawn and i was so confused. nice to see some servers actually taking action properly now
If you've taken the time to properly optimize Minecraft (like using Paper, which they're obviously using) the performance demands per-user are pretty easily overcome. A 100 user server with all the usual anti-cheat can be run from home on an old Dell Precision T with a 100mbit internet connection, a $5 donation every week can pay the server's power cost in most urban cities, and the rest can be handled alongside the usual expenses of life. Ironically, what really costs is supporting and maintaining the P2W features between minecraft updates so "donators" don't loose their "perks" between updates, as well as the fees involved in having a payment processor handle your "donations".
Only reason those kids burned keys is because they spent hundreds of real dollars
