Linda's voice is so prestine. All the Dreams from the 80s are super dope. Yall be sleeping on the brother(s) playing Curtis voice. The he ends the song is just phenomenal.
Linda Leilani Brown sounds really awesome here. It`s amazing how much amplification sound can mess with singer`s voices. In her case, it tends to make her sound overly high-pitched and even squealy at times. In reality, she doesn`t sound like that at all and has quite a strong voice with nice bold vibrato. Love her. Wish I was old enough to attend a performance of the 1st national tour when it played L.A.`s Shubert. I believe Linda was Deena in that engagement opposite Holiday`s Effie. Btw, I am obsessed with the original "Heavy." It`s just awesome! Why oh why didn`t they include it in the film version??? Argh!
To make it easier to change the format of the fights between Effie and the rest of the group. In the musical, Effie ruined concert. In the movie, she ruined a recording session and a tv presentation. And this way they can flush out the beef between Curtis and Effie, how he treats Deena with more love than her
Most of the movies musical numbers were diegetic and took place on stage or in studios. This number, like most of the musical, is non-diegetic and diegetic at the same time the fights being sung when it reality theyre just arguing/screaming but also performing heavy for a recording/at a concert. Something like that in a live action film is harder for modern-day audiences to believe than on stage. A shame. I'd love to do a animated adaptation as the suspension of disbelief is stronger then in live action
@KMTengaged For some reason during the Boston tryout and the first year and a half on Broadway Effie would simply stand and smile during the second verse of "Heavy"... During the 1983 National Tour the revamped the whole show adding big and subtle changes here and there. One of the changes was having Effie interrupt Deena during "Heavy"...
She was. When it premiered, they made a really strong effort to distance it from Motown as far as they could. Especially, when Diana Ross lowkey threatened Sheryl Lee Ralph with a lawsuit.
Jennifer is EATING here!!! This number works best when it feels intense, and this is 100% that!! I only wish we got to hear Jen sing the reworked version of Heavy with Efffie interrupting Deena. She would've crushed it!
@@adamcampbell8544 it’s really interesting there is a Boston tryout version where there is a third verse where they are doing Heavy and it’s Just Deena and Lorrell.. Like Effie didn’t show up
@nubianmanmusic I love me some Sheryl Lee Ralph, but Linda Leilani Brown is probably my favorite Deena... LLB tore this up, and One Night Only!!! I love it!
That part was added in Heavy after they drop the green overlays and come out in all white. When Jennifer and Debbie burrell went with the LA company they added dancers to Heavy and added Effie singing over Deana when Vanessa Townsend took over as Effie. After the 1st year they did several enhancements to the show like the opening of the Second Act was totally redone and male dancers were added to the Dreams versions of One Night Only . They want to refresh the show before it went to LA.
@lf1234 I have two whole shows...One from Jennifer's last night and one from the touring company... Her characterization is fun, especially during the early scenes when she is supposed to be young. Sometimes during the touring company version She uses a country accent and sound a little Urkle-ish... But I cherish LLB's perfromance... She and Sheryl are my favs... I just wish I knew what happened to her
@jenard20 Well, I feel like you could tell she had become more of diva by this point, for instance, the 'Move' from opening night She sounds really good and on her final 'Move' She is screaming and carrying on alot... To each his own... I am more of a Deena (Sheryl Lee Ralph and Linda Leilani Brown) person so I haven't even listened completely to AIATY yet... But I'll get it up here for ya soon!!!
@JesusFan Do you want One Night Only (Disco) from this production with Linda Leilani Brown, or the national touring company version with her, from a few months later...
@youndatmonkee , oh, could you please post some clips from the touring production. I've read a couple of glowing reviews from that one. Oh, please, even if its just Linda's stuff. I'm such a fan!!!!
@youndatmonkee tru... after she won the tony she just didnt give a damn... (but to be fair alot of artist are like that after they win... which is why so many dont stay in the show much longer after the awards)
Can you please post "And I'm Telling You"? I used to have that audio track, but unfortunaly I've lost it! I love all the crazy riffs that Jennifer put on that last night on her big song! Please, post it!
No Sharon did the Bus and Truck company of Dreamgirls. Debbie Burrell played Deana in the start of the tour and Aliysa Gyse took over Deana 7 months into the tour and later Lilias took over for Effie 9 months in the tour. LInda went MIA during the her stepping in to replace Sheryl Leigh Ralph in the last year of the Broadway run where Brenda Pressley played Deana for 6 months. This tape if of the last week Jennifer in the Broadway show before they went to LA with the 1st tour. Sheryl Leigh was on vacation and they put LInda in for the week to get the experience of playing Deana . They also tried Arnesha Walker as Deana who later became Lorrell on the tour
@@datboi1975 just seeing this... YES! I saw her a few times when Sheryl was on vacation. She KILLED top of the second act. She really gave you essence of Diana. And she was overall the best Deena understudy because she sang, acted and DANCED her ass off. In some instances much better than Sheryl.
BAbbbbby!!!! The way Miss Holliday growwwled out "Your Taking the Lead ByTaking My Man" whooo no one can touch that lady
I am OBSESSED with the way Jennifer sings "You made him love you" at 3:31!!!!!!!!!! It's SO delicious!!!!!!!!!

So happy they did that. The fight following the concert is so awkward because Effie did not cause a scene 😂
@WORKOUT66 I think Miss Ross was even more disturbed by the show once they hired Linda
She was. When it premiered, they made a really strong effort to distance it from Motown as far as they could. Especially, when Diana Ross lowkey threatened Sheryl Lee Ralph with a lawsuit.
That intro tho 🔥🔥🔥.

There was a version of the performance where Effie sings overs Deena, but i cant seem to find it anywhere

Diandra M did she ever get to perform?
