  • Today the weather was cloudy so we took the opportunity to bait another main hive in preparation for Swarm Season! Baiting a main hive is just as easy as baiting a swarm trap except you don't have to transfer the Bees when you land a swarm!

    My dream house will have an observation hive in every wall. Mic sounds great.

      That would be the dream. I told 18 Bees I want to get a log or two that I can keep an observation colony inside.

    I borrowed your straw idea over winter. Some came out dry and some sopping wet this spring, but good colony survival. Thanks

      That's good, maybe a little more side ventilation can help with the wet straw.

    Heard that a beekeeper in Twin Oaks (20 niles west of you) has already caught 2 swarms. Your new microphone works great. No wind noise.

      That's crazy! Swarms are coming early this season. We have 5 swarm traps out already but plan on getting more. I know yall are more than prepared this year for catching some Free Bees! 🐝🐝🐝

      @SecureAcresNaturalBees we put up 2 on the mountain yesterday, and we have 9 up in central NC. We only have 3 empty hives.

    Are you worried about wax moths getting on the new wax you put in?

    • @SecureAcresNaturalBees
      @SecureAcresNaturalBees  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not really. They don't really take to wax strips, I think they prefer full blown comb. In any case Swarm season should come and go before it will become a problem.

    I just got my hive from Dr. Leo. It's a small 14 frame. I was wondering if maybe you could help me figure something out.... Because I've gone through the material repeatedly and can't quite figure it out. I want to put a gable roof on this hive do I remove the flashing from the flat roof before adding the gable roof? I'm new to these hives and with all your experience I was hoping you might have some insight for me.
    And one more thing, when do you remove the Ziploc bag with the lemongrass oil on it? As in how long after a swarm moves in?
    I was really relieved to see you just using a lighter because I wasn't sure how to get the foundation on my frames without having the things that Dr. Leo recommends in the literature ...lol
    Love your videos. Thank you so very much for sharing them with us

      Thanks for watching!
      For your Layens hive from Dr. Leo, I've never added a gable roof to any of his equipment I've ordered. But if that's the direction you want to go I would take the flashing off, put a support board in the center, put two planks on either side and maybe add some nice roofing like you've seen in some of our older videos. That's how we built our gable roofs when we did it.
      For the zip lock bag, you can remove it whenever you catch your colony. We have kept them in there for over a year and it didn't seem to hurt anything so whenever is convenient for you.
      I see people using batteries to heat the frame wire for the wax and it's just easier for me personally to use a lighter. 😅

      @@SecureAcresNaturalBees thank you so very much for answering my questions. Sorry to dump them all in one video 🤣 I truly appreciate your experienced guidance on this.
      We had langstroth hives for a couple years and then we had to move. So we rehomed the bees (and our hives) with a friend and I wanted to start over in our new location and came across horizontal hive and have been a huge fan and very excited to get set up. Your videos have been super helpful and inspirational and encouraging. Thank you so much!

      Thank you so much for the kind words! We were at the start of Natural Beekeeping in 2019 and since then we've seen only positives with our Apiary. If you haven't already get the book "Keeping Bees with a Smile" by Fedor Lazutin, Dr. Leo should still have it. That book is a god send and if you follow it closely you will have a highly sustainable and fulfilling Bee yard. Keep us updated on your journey! 👍

      @@SecureAcresNaturalBees thank you! As I do anything. I research like a crazy person so I got the book couple weeks ago before getting a hive so I could get mentally prepared for what's ahead and I do enjoy that book. It was definitely different than Beekeeping for Dummies lol

    Scouts on your swarm trap?

    • @SecureAcresNaturalBees
      @SecureAcresNaturalBees  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      No we actually caught this colony a year ago, but we wanted to see how Bees would do over the winter in the Layens Swarm Trap and they did great! I plan on transferring them probably in a month, I might get a good video for it.
