  • Today we added Honey frames to a few of our colonies for honey production. It was fun but something happened that we were not expecting!

When you pulled the board out, the last frame was just solid with bees. You exposed so many bees that it caused them to swarm you. Smoking before removing the board would have prevented your trouble entirely. This is not a dangerous hive.

Ill have to think about it, this isn't the first time I've skipped a smoker but it was the first time they came at me like that. Adding frames is so simple that over the year's Ive kept the Bees the smoker hasn't been necessary.
If you see the first hive in this video you can see how docile they are and this has always been my experience when only adding honey frames. Anyways Ill think on it.

When you e opened that defensive hive my first thought was that they are about to do a swarm taking away half the colony. Now you can stop that defensiveness make nucleus’s! Do a divide and conquer. Make splits and re-queen. When there numbers are high more defense and when numbers are low less defense.

Your looking slimmer man! Keep up the good work!! I costom build supers for my 12 & 6 frame Layens, that makes it so much easier to harvest there extra honey. Bee safe my friend!

My friends had a grumpy hive for a while. One day they went back and they were quiet. There may have been a reason that day. Splitting a hive can calm them down as well. There will be fewer bees in October. Visit them in a week and see how they are. Good luck.

We don't do splits but I will think about this hive. I've never had Bees react this way so it was kind of shocking. Maybe it was just a bad time.

Why do you leave a space between your top bar and your starter strip?

Wow... So sorry you went through that! I know it happens but still...
    Glad you're ok.
Please let us know what you decide to do with the hive. I'm curious about what happens

It was shocking! Still considering options but I don't think we will keep these Bees. All Beekeepers should be aware that this can happen and while it's truly unfortunate it's just not sustainable. Ill let you know what we end up doing.

Those aggressive bees might have been getting harassed by something else before you opened them up and their attack pheromones were on high alert. I would wait a few weeks and get fully suited up with a smoker and open them up again just to be sure.
Enjoy all your videos and especially your natural approach to bee keeping.

Which hive did you weed wack at the beginning of the video?

That was the welcome hive, it's currently uninhabited.

Question... We have a 14 frame from Dr Leo. We started our package bees with 7 frames. Went in after few weeks and they drew most out, so added 3 more. Should we go to the full 14 or decide after peeking in on their progress? We're enjoying not having to do weekly inspections ( even though I visit almost daily just to watch them ..lol).

I would wait to add frames 11 - 14 until you see lots of honey on the 10th frame that you put in. You never want to give them too much space unless the population is strong. You noticed I added seven frames to both of these colonies in the video but they both had honey filled out on the last frame. Hope that helps. 🐝🐝🐝

Get your honey on October from those crazy honeybees, and then just throw water and soap on them, but it’s up to you, I heard crazy bees, bring in Honey faster, you do have enough land to keep them, I can’t, I have people living to close to my house, whatever you decide to do, I wish you luck, take care

Not totally sure I'm going to get rid of them yet. They were defensive on the inside but on the outside they aren't really that bad. Lesson learned to always have your smoker handy!

While you're in the hives why don't you check for eggs and larvae. Did that second hive have a queen?

  • @fivejs4814
    @fivejs4814 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Try replacing the queen, she sets the tone of the hive. And they could have been aggravated by something else before you got there. Just because they were a little more aggressive this time doesn’t mean they are aggressive. all colonies have the same potential to be aggressive and docile. And how many times have you been to that same hive and they didn’t mind you being there?

Yikes! Are they taking lessons from the murder hornets?

Maybe! They certainly let me know I was not welcome.

  • @SilverhillBee

I am really shocked your hives are that calm with this one exception. I have 15 hives now and all are caught not bought and my experience is that the true survivors are more defensive. I will tell you that depending on the day my bees are grumpy and act just like that. To me, this is fairly normal behavior. They don’t bother anyone until you open them up and when they don’t want to see you they have no problem letting you know. Go easy because this is the true recipe for strong hives, modern beekeepers expect almost pet like behavior from a wild insect which in my opinion contradicts nature. A truly hot hive is far worse than that.
