I remember the Detroit Zoo commercial, with all the animals talking. Plus the Detroit Institute of Arts commercial. Also, the Great Space Coaster used to come on WKBD. Fond memories.
That commercial was so entertaining to my sister and I (we were around 5 and 3 at the time and would run to the tv and laugh at the voice overs for the animals.
I was born in Detroit in 1976. Although I was 5yrs old in 1981, my memory is razor sharp in terms of remembering these commercials and the jingles. Man o man this is some serious nostalgia (I remember being allowed to stay up as long as I wanted on weekends and my siblings and I would struggle to stay awake to see the Three Stooges or Laurel and Hardy and many of these commercials would air)…so many of my loved one I’ve lost since the airing of theses commercials.
I did too! It's just my parents made me be tucked into the pulled out sofa-bed in our spare room to watch TV that late, and I would often fall asleep before I got to see Comedy Classics (which was what they called the show that showed 3 Stooges and Laurel and Hardy shorts). I remember when it was an hour long and could get three 3 Stooges shorts in, or when it got shortened to a half hour and only showed one 3S short, and a Looney Tunes short. Great times, man!
@@JL-sm6cg another thing I do is look at the location of the businesses in the commercial because now that I’m older and have a better understanding of the metropolitan area geographically, I brings the commercials and the businesses to life even more.
When I was around 11 or 12 in the mid to late 1980s I had a paper route (Detroit Free Press) and the Saturday papers would have the comics and other advertisements from MC Sporting Goods and Dunham’s. They would have High Top Converse that I’d fantasize about having a pair of.
At 17:45, I had a digital watch like the one in the commercial! If I recall correctly, it was a Criterion brand watch bought from Foland’s and it had stuff like the alarm, stopwatch, second time zone, and calendar features. My brother had a calculator watch and he couldn’t wear it to math class because the teachers were always on the lookout for them, for obvious reasons! 😊 Man, the stuff that was considered high-tech back then!
_Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?_ is one of my absolute favorite books from childhood. My mom gave it to me in '85. I always wished I could see the stage show. If I had $100 million, I'd make it into a movie one hundred per cent faithful to the book.
Dexatrim. The start of drug marketing on TV. So strange not to see the “ask your Dr about (random drug that ruins your body)” commercials. Drug commercials are about 4 per show breaks now.
No interest in Lawrence Welk but VERY interested in old commercials especially ones pre-1985 since they’re such a disconnect from the world I grew up in so it’s fascinating!
Aaaaaaahhhh.... remember when ads simply told you about their product without the PC bs pushing some social agenda in a nauseating, outrageous, usually insulting way?
I remember commercials trying to sell their crap, regardless of which decade I watched them. You'd benefit from redirecting that pent up aggression toward the real source (aka you)
Holy cow. I was 5 in 1981, in the first grade and taking swimming lessons. It feels like such a long time ago.

Saw the zoo ad a lot and had went there but still thought Toledo's zoo was nicer.

Used to watch Sanford & Son reruns and The Three Stooges on WKBD all the time.

My grandfather who died in February worked for GE in the 50s and I believe the 60s. He would always tell me about his time there.
Thank you for the awesome post! Brought back a lot of nostalgia.
Before there was MeTV showing all the old classics, there was WKBD channel 50 showing the old classics.
WKBD-TV Channel 50 and WXON-TV Channel 20 were Detroit's original TV stations for classic TV shows😎.

MC sporting goods ruled back in the 80's...bought all my softball equipment there.

Now there are 3,000 channels and there's still nothing good on TV. 🥴😂

And the two girls in that candy bar commercial are now in their 50s and old enough to be a grandmother. Feeling old yet? 😂
Channel 50...memories.
Growing up in Redford in the 1960s and 1970s, Channel 50, was number, 1.
7:20 the voice of Bill Silver. He was also the voice on those famous Ginsu knife commercials.

I read it on summer break when I was probably 14-15 yrs old. Read it in 2 days. I hope I still have that book... it’s one that left an impression.

10:54 - Serutan - with Myron Floren, the accordionist on "The Lawrence Welk Show".
Im looking for a commercial for Fenton Riding Stables mid to late 70's - early 80's any ideas where I might look?

Can you find the "Easy Rest" commercials starring Gordy Howe and his wife???
Sad you didn't include Lawrence Welk. I would've loved to have seen the last year of it when it was still regularly on the air.

That voiceover "talent" for 50 didn't spark much enthusiasm! Maybe Dr. Don should have done the non kids promos as well!
Dr. Don! Now there's a blast from the past!
I wouldn’t have thought you could say “crack and crevice” on TV back then.
