One of the most deeply moving, thoughtful episodes of any tv series I've seen. The fact that this disturbed woman was able to halt the two waring sides enough for them to see the other side as more than just faceless enemies if not for just a while.

Every aspect of this show was done superbly. Acting directing the production. ....the amount of explosions alone was incredible for tv. Combat was top shelf stuff and it stands the test of time. Magnificent.

This one merits a salute ! It shows a bit of humanity under an intense period . This is what television used to be . I watched "combat" when it was aired , and it is still great , even in black and white . I person forgets about the age of this film because of the intensity of the story ! I entered the military in '68 thinking it was like the stories of "Combat" . I was very wrong !

Soldiers fight wars because of governments, but sometimes, on the battlefield, soldiers can find the humanity in each other. An excellent story, well written, filmed and directed. A good job well done by all and particularly the art of Vic Marrows craft and skill.
Sadly, this is something so overlooked in the politics of the world we know today.

Amen to that. Politicians start wars and soldiers pay the price. In scarce poignant moments, the innate humanity of the fighting men shines through. Witness the Christmas truce -- decided on by the soldiers on both sides -- in WWI, brought to the screen in the movie "Joyeux Noël". A few miles from my home, there is a statue honoring a Confederate soldier who, during the night after the slaughter of Union troops assaulting Marye's Heights, made repeated trips in front of the Confederate lines to bring water to wounded Union soldiers. Through all of the violence and misery, soldiers can somehow retain their humanity. This episode is a wonderful illustration of such an instance.

Deeper than pausing to try to find a baby. Much deeper. Right to the level of why and how men have always fought wars, forgetting (or maybe ignoring) our own humanity. Working together is most always the right way, when possible. I find it hard to verbalize the true meaning but I felt it several times during this episode. It brought tears to my eyes for all of us. For all humanity.

What the producers are accustomed to doing is using sets that are parts of the back lots of Universal or MGM. It's one of many cost_saving hacks that Hollywood has implemented over the years

Lisa Pera was beautiful. This was a good episode because it mimicked real life events like the Christmas Truce of 1914, with a bit of a Twilight Zone twist to make it interesting for television.

I recently read “Soldat: Reflections of a German Soldier, 1936-1949” by Siegfried Knappe.
I highly recommend it. It really humanized the individual German soldier outside of what we see in the movies.
Based on a wartime diary, he was a professional soldier/patriot doing the best he could for his country, just like men from other nations. Not a member of the Nazi Party, or fanatical fascist, just a soldier.
GoldenWinger001 you are right a soldier follows commands or the army would fall apart.

This was one of the most dramatic and compassionate episodes I've seen thus far. I believe such a situation could have happened. What would you have done put in the same situation where a mother steps between a battle and pleads for the rescue of her baby. Both sides, despite the outcome, lowered their weapons to help the innocent. What humanity! Die another day.....

+Gary Wilder Why can't the world be more like this every day. It's not that damn hard to get along with most people. People aren't SO very different. We all laugh, cry, love, and die. War is so costly in terms of money and heartbreak. Peace and humanity cost nothing. It's a win/win situation.

In the battle of the Hurtgen Forest there was a large truce where the Germans and the Americans worked together to rescue wounded from both sides so I'm sure brief truces by small units did happen. There was also a documented truce on the eastern front, I believe during the battle of Stalingrad where both sides stopped fighting to listen to a violinist play a piece.
