I gotta say, Saad is persistent. One of my problems with Islam's validity that I have stated to Muslims is that there is no reason to believe that Muhammad did not make it all up. He supposedly had encounters with an archangel when alone and during those meetings was told the "word of God" which became the Quran. I can think of several very good, very plausible reasons why Muhammad would have made it all up. If someone proclaimed that they spoke to an archangel, why would anyone believe that? It is no different than my saying that I spent yesterday aboard a UFO orbiting earth. Should that be believed?

There are a lot of aspects of the various religions that if you stepped back and looked at them logically, they can actually look pretty silly and maybe even bizarre. I would think that the concept of a person coming back to life and walking around would need actual real evidence to be accepted. But apparently not. There are many firsthand eyewitness accounts of Bigfoot but what rational person believes in Bigfoot? Yet with less evidence, those same people believe in the Resurrection.

Saad seems like a legit cool guy. I like him...I just do. He seems quite intelligent and ethical and reasonable.
Having said that....he's harboring a lot of cognitive dissonance and is quite unreasonable at times.
Oh well....I prefer living in a world with someone like Saad than a _whole lot_ of other people. He's alright in my book. At least he's willing to challenge and be challenged. That's admirable enough.

I agree. Honestly the UFO analogy is the most common one I use in conversations but some of them believe UFOs are real too so it gets funny from that point. Also I feel that Saad is on the road to atheism, atleast he is trying to get outside the religious box for starters.

    • @WhtetstoneFlunky
      @WhtetstoneFlunky 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@Neelzen I don't often see the argument for Muhammad concocting the whole story of an archangel. To me it seems like a undeniable argument against what is really the whole foundation of Islam. It is the same argument against Joseph Smith seeing an angel and the subsequent Book of Mormon. There is a clear lack of thought among many Muslim when it comes to Islam. I have heard "how could Muhammad write a book when he was illiterate?" Rather than to explain the obvious, I now ask the person to stop and think about it for a few minutes and take into account that Muhammad was surrounded by people many of whom were literate and almost all could speak and present ideas.
And then there are the various mathematical and literary miracles in the Quran which are not miracles at all.

I also had to distance myself from my sister who keep trying to fear me back to her distorted beliefs and were very harmful to me as I began to see reason
I’m now 69 years old and it has taken me years to get that crap out off my head

I might have the plus of never listening to them parents anyway. Had some hard times and in some cases should have listened better but it has formed me to who I am today. Well they are not my parents to begin with as well. I lost them before I could even understand in a car crash when I was about half a year old, I was the sole survivor of the crash, my sister (4 years old) also died in the crash. I almost died myself and was in hospital for 5 months. I broke almost every bone imaginable and it is a wonder I survived. I was flung out of the car in my seat and was found 200 meters from the accident. Can't remember a thing about it only what I have been told. My aunt and uncle raised me as if I was their child.

      ForOdinAndAsgard
      To help you understand
I went to catholic school when I was five years old when sadistic nuns taught at all catholic schools
I did try to question once but was shut down and told not to question and have faith
I was scared of god, hell ,the devil ,the priests and violence from the nuns
I arrived in Australia as a 12 month child from Italy after WW 2, in 1951 to a racist country where many hated “wogs, dagoes “ and remember many times being told to go back where I came from.
My father returned after 8 years as a prisoner of wall with mental health issues and there was domestic violence in my family of origin home and I feared him as well
I had no opportunity to get any other opinions anywhere and so was brainwashed and believed what I was told
I now have taught my grandchildren to question and think critically about religion and thankfully they also have rational thinking parents
I was a timid scared child growing up in the 1950`s not having a phone, access to books, the internet or others I could speak to about my fears
My mum was frightened of thunder as she thought it was caused by evil spirits, she was born in 1911 and was also indoctrinated
My sister is still a fundamental catholic and believes in Adam and Eve and all the other crap, she’s 85
You may have been mentally stronger than me

I like Thomas. I don't agree with his reasoning overall, but what I really appreciate is that his arguments do seem to be largely unique, not just regurgitated apologetics talking points. He also seems willing to make admissions when his arguments have flaws. Thomas is by far one of the best types of theist callers. He's always extremely polite, willing to listen, willing to learn, and go back to the drawing board at the end to formulate a new line of argumention. I'm a fan of his as a caller.

I had the opportunity to move to Austin six years ago. I didn't do it ultimately because the stigma of being a gay man, living in the south weighed very heavily on me. I simply didn't want to be subjected to that. After growing up in southern California, I permanently lost a friend because she moved to Austin. She was a truly lovely, smart and funny young lady back in the day. After moving to Texas, she absorbed the most insidious parts of Texas culture. She became overtly racist towards African Americans, Mexicans and even those of the LGBTQ community. Though she strangely gave me a strange 'grandfather pass', despite knowing full well I was gay from way back in freshman year of high school. I blame Texan culture for the loss of my friend. She was poisoned by the gross stereotype most other Americans abhor southerners for. I like watching this show because it is proof that not everyone in Austin is the same. That has to count for something...

Fusion took place and helium and lighter elements were created. The stars in later stages started to produce heavier elements. Eventually these stars went nova and produced the heaviest elements. The next wave of stars started as mainly hydrogen and helium, with small amounts of heavy elements. Then the process of fusion took place:- repeat what happened in the first wave of stars.

If nothing happens than she didn't cheat. If she cheats, according to the bible, the holy water is supposed to cause her belly to swell and for her to have a miscarry than she cheated. Thomas: The subjective experience part of consciousness is just the brain watching itself. Circular (feedback loop) navigation system.
For those that may not get the meaning of this: Whenever a theist attempts to convince others of a god, (or some other kind of supernatural fantasy) he likes to find some kind of mystery that we don't fully understand, and tries to smuggle in a "god of the gap" explanation. In this case, Thomas has brought up the age-old problem of the subjective experience of consciousness.
Many theistic philosophers have tried to claim that this experience can't be explained by the mechanics and processes of physical brains. They claim that there must be some kind of "ghost in the machine", separate from the physical processes. However, years of research in neuroscience, have found that our brains process data from multiple inputs to create models of the world around us, in order to navigate it. This process involves a continuous feedback loop.
This process also creates an image in our brains, like a video processor, and the continuous interplay of watching and creating can be a mundane, perfectly natural, explanation for the subjective experience of consciousness. And just like the video processor, once the power goes off, the show stops.

Humans hunt and gather food, build shelter attack enemies and try to avoid danger. We do things for ourselves. Your camry is only running a program that a human directed it to do.
"AI systems can now outperform humans at playing chess and Go, recognizing faces, and driving safely. Even so, most researchers say truly conscious machines - ones that don’t just run programs but have feelings and are self-aware - are decades away. " says Justin Hart, a computer scientist at the University of Texas.
That is a quote from one of the top scientist in the field and he agrees with me, there is no robot or AI on this earth that has reached self awareness. Self awareness is not running programs that a human downloaded into you, you must be self sufficient doing things on your own behalf, for yourself.
Even the scientist that did the top AI consciousness test and created the most advanced robots so far agrees with me on the subject. here is a quote from him.
"Right now, the main thing holding AI back from being truly self-aware is the fact that they simply can't crunch as much data -...-roboticists are at a loss as to how to stitch all that information together to build a cohesive picture of the world," says Prof. Selmer Bringsjord is the chair of the Department of Cognitive Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a professor of Computer Science and Cognitive Science.
These 2 scientist are at the forefront of this groundbreaking technology and they agree with me, AI is not yet self aware. So no your car is not conscious it is not aware of itself. I'm still waiting for my question as to what is the selling point of atheism? What's the good news that permeates joy? Please list them.

This guy says he doesn't believe in religion and proceeds to quote the bible wtf. He says God loves us and yet he created light and darkness good and evil like he's a manipulative sadist? Maybe this person should listen to his own argument before he opens his mouth. Maybe I missed something but it seems like he believes in the judeo Christian God

Evolution is a non-sequitur from theism and atheism. It's true that the fact of evolution disproves specifically the Abrahamic creation story (and probably a few others), but this is purely incidental.

At 36 mins in I might have mentioned the action of the Weak Force which appears to be non-deterministic hence 'not' a result of cause and effect. Just being helpful- I hope.

Hey Saad, I once did salvia in college and I still to this day (10yrs later) have vivid memories of when I feel off the universe. Yup, I was so high I thought I feel off the universe, and it wasn't scary, it was just another plane of existence ;) and that is why personal experiences are not evidence, and appealing to higher planes makes no sense

I am of the impression that a lot of people don't understand what 'believe' really means. They don't think of their beliefs as absolute convictions. Instead they use the word to mean 'I think x is possible' or 'I think x is likely', and then when questioned about it as if they're /convinced/ x is true, they feel like they're being told x is impossible.
