- You must know by now from my previous postings on ShineyVisions.com that I am enthralled by many things, and good food is on that list! We looked forward to every meal on the Viking Gefjon! Always freshly made, with a wide variety of offerings along with healthy choices and regional samplings. Here are some examples of our wonderful dinners.

Thank you for your posting with many good pictures! I just came back from a 15-day Budapest to Amsterdam last week but I have to disagree with you about the quality of the ship foods. At best the quality is very average may be substandard in most days. We had only two good meals, Chateaubriand and Rack of lamb. Especially the regional food menus nightly were horrible. The Wiener schnitzel was like the bark of an old tree and the German Roast Pork with Crispy Skin was like a tree trunk, dry and chewy! We had an armature cook at the egg station making egg and omelet every morning. I really feel sorry for this young man cook my egg with a shaky hand and sweaty face! The brightest spots are the ice cream and sorbet. I have serious doubt how Viking can rate themself as a Premium cruise company!
Dear Eddy, first of all thank you for your comment! I appreciate your candor! I am so sorry that your food experience was SO disappointing! On the Viking Facebook group that I am a member of, there are also very positive as well as very negative comments about the food, so apparently there is a lack of uniformity across ships and their crews.
My wife and I did exactly the same cruise last October. Most of the main meals were horrible, some things I just couldn’t eat. The good parts were breakfast, soups and desserts. And while I am at it, the service was substandard as well. The good things during the trip were the cruise director, the excursions and the boat itself. Tips were included in our fare, no one got additional tips, except the guides, but they are not employed by Viking.
Thank you for your postings. A river cruise is on my bucket list. However, we are used to ocean cruises every year before the pandemic. I wonder, my husband is a big eater, and usually asks for double portions on ocean cruises, I see that portions are small , is it possible to ask for double portions on the meals? Do they have a set menu or is it a la carte?
Thank you for watching my video and for your comments! It was my experience that they will bring you as much food and beer/wine as you wish. I asked for extra desserts several times. I would be shocked if your husband ever leaves a meal still wanting. May your future travels be wonderful and safe!!

Which country was this? I've heard the portions in the UK are small portions with no options to eat in between. I've heard to bring snacks with lack of enough food.
This was the Grand European River Cruise - these are shots of the meals covered in two weeks during the cruise!! There was plenty to eat!!
Maybe each ship has different head Chef, Food taste different depending on who prepares !!! But menu looks Totally different.
Looks better that “Regent -Cruise” which is very upscale Ocean Cruise !
Oh my goodness, Sang! I am so sorry to hear of your disappointing experience on Viking. Since it was our first cruise with them, we can't compare how consistent the quality was across different cruises. But my video truly reflected our food experience on the Viking Gefjon, it was absolutely wonderful. I hope your future cruises, when this world opens up again, will be wonderful as well!
Yikes, are there vegetarian options instead of meat? I'm going on a VIking river cruise in September and I don't eat veal or lamb!

Thank you for another great video. Unfortunately, I can’t agree with with you about the food. Very substandard. I commented about it somewhere else. We enjoyed the trip overall, but the food was very disappointing along with the service.
Very interesting, as well as disappointing. There now have been several people who have commented here negatively about the food. I am so sorry about your experience. I know for me, having a great food experience key to a great vacation!! I hope that this won't happen to you again and that all future trips will be the idyllic ones that we all dream of!! @@shineyvisions6955 thank you for your reply. This won’t happen again as we will not be doing another Viking river cruise. However, we are still interested in a Viking cruise in the Mediterranean in the next year or so. We just have to be sure that the food is much better than the river cruise. I am very pleased that you enjoyed the food, it looks wonderful. An English friend of mine did a similar river cruise a few years ago and really enjoyed the food, he was surprised with our comments! OMG !!! Food you had on Viking Cruise is NOTHING LIKE WE HAD !!!! We had same itinerary only different ship. I vowed NOT TO GO WITH VIKING RIVER Cruise any more. Food was absolutely disappointing. Salmon they served taste like freezer-burnt and rock hard when they served. All the chairs in dining room badly soiled. Many more to add onto....
Sang, that is so disappointing to hear, especially considering the cost of one of these cruises.
