This was a fantastic review. I appreciate the enthusiasm for Sonic and it made it easier to hear where you were coming from when critiquing the game or drawing comparisons to previous games
Played a bit of Sonic Dream Team on Apple TV and the game feels like a modern mini Sonic Adventure game. One standout in this game is the polish and expressiveness. It's a criminal that this isn't on consoles because this game would feel good to play like on the Switch.
Dream team is what cyberspace should have been. The open zone overworld of frontiers mixing with the levels like this and a chao garden would be adventure 3
I highly think that Dream Team is a combination of Heroes and Adventure. If you bring more content here, you'll get a game of quality which is excellent. My Apple TV HD (4th generation, 2015) is the lowest-supported model, and I can confirm for anyone else with that model: it’s unplayable - like, worse than Sonic Boom on Wii U unplayable. On the TVHD, settings are locked to very low at 540p 30fps, and it can’t even maintain 30fps, encountering frequent stutters and even massive lockups at times. But then again, it’s kind of a miracle it can even run at all on the TVHD considering it’s akin to 2014’s iPhone 6, less graphically powerful than a PSVita. The only Apple TVs that can properly run this game are Apple TV 4Ks. I’ve resigned myself to the reality that my iPhone XR mounted to a Google Stadia controller is the way I’ll be playing out the rest of the game, it runs max settings perfectly at native 828p 60fps. I’d have loved to play on my iPad 10 as it also runs max settings 60fps at an alluring 1640p, but the lack of cross saves means the most portable option is the best one
@@VicViperT301Pilot not surprised. My Apple TV HD has an A8 (which is amazing that it got tvOS 17 when other A8 devices like the iPhone 6, iPod touch 6, and iPad mini 4 lost support on iOS 12 way back in 2018)

I completely agree with your point here about the comparison of this to Frontiers. I enjoyed Frontiers, but it really just doesn’t feel like a Sonic game in the same ways I enjoy the series in the first place due to its generically realistic open world that has random Sonic level design bits floating around in the sky. Even if we just compare this game to Frontiers’ Cyberspace stages, I think Dream Team clears those stages easily with how satisfying they are to speed through, how fun it is to just run around and explore, and the art direction being entirely new and unique while Cyberspace quite literally just reuses Generations stage assets for 3/4ths of the stages. I truly hope Sonic Team takes some notes from this game as SEGA Hardlight came in and almost completely nailed it on their first go.
I hope they either bring this to consoles eventually. I just hope though that this is Sega testing the waters for a new Sonic direction and I hope they expand on the idea!

This was an interesting review because as many times as "3D Sonic" is mentioned, Frontiers, the latest 3D Sonic game is not. Seems like a purposeful omission given its own Sonic Adventure comparisons

I'd wait for a chance of port, and only if it's either expanded, or costs less than $20.
People in the comments here are pretty civil, mostly just saying "I wish Sega would port this over." On X/Twitter, people are losing their minds. The amount of Sega/Apple hate is crazy. I don't get it. I really resonate with one comment: "Plenty of Sonic games have released exclusively for Nintendo, an ecosystem not everyone is part of, and nobody batted an eye. Sonic Dream Team releases exclusively for Apple, an ecosystem not everyone is part of, and everybody loses their mind. Double standard much? Don't get me wrong, I didn't support exclusivity then and I don't support it now. But I've seen an outsized level of hatred directed at Sega and Apple over Dream Team, hatred that I never witnessed back during the heyday of Sonic Advanced, Colors, Lost World, Boom (et cetera)." I missed out on so many great Sonic games because I never had a GBA, GameCube, Wii, or WiiU. But that doesn't mean I wasn't happy for all the fans who did get to play those games, and there were many, many Nintendo folk. Just like there are many, many Apple folk as well. I wish them the same happiness. If we get a port, great. If we don't, then it's not a problem. I'm just glad that Sega is making good Sonic games again.
As someone who has an iPhone to play Dream Team and currently having fun with it, I disagree with that comment. Nintendo platforms are proper videogame platforms, I wouldn't call the Apple Arcade service something up to par with a console ecosystem. And I also do remember people asking why the heck SEGA had a contract with Nintendo in the early 2010s during Lost World and Boom's releases, people were begging for the franchise to being multiplatform again, and were also begging for the 2013 mobile remakes to be available on consoles/PC like 2011 CD was (even if a lot of people had phones back then and today, it's not a proper gaming platform). Besides, it's pretty likely this is going to have a proper release sooner or later (Like Lost World and Origins had for example), the game looks too barebones to be a proper console title due to the amount of content it has (which isn't bad for a mobile title, mind you), so this might be good for them to get feedback for people who are playing so they can polish the game and add content further until it gets a proper console release. It's not the best approach, but it certainly ain't a bad thing considering people are looking forward to this game after playing it. I do agree that people are quite civil here, either excited with the game and pointing out stuff, or having fun with it e.e

these comments are proof people will complain no matter what. they literally made a good game and people are finding a way to twist it into something bad
I'm glad to see Sonic being treated with care and getting a good title. I hope lots of people play it. But I see the comments here and I think we have to open our minds to understand the real market. I know many of us want to play this on consoles, but Apple's installed base is much, much larger than the installed base of Nintendo Switch+PS4/5+Xbox combined. So, even though it's exclusive to Apple Arcade, this Sonic has the potential to be played by many more people than all the recent releases in the franchise. The mobile market is huge and, in the case of Apple Arcade, it's a service that has more and more great games. I'm not saying that you should buy an Apple device to play games, but just as we have console exclusives, we may start to see more and more (good) mobile exclusives. Things are changing and we need to understand the impact of this.
looks at least better than the last X sonic games BUT it also looks like they prototyped those stages and then instead of fully develop them, they just replace the dummy elements with a bit more nice looking elements. still full of abstract floating platforms etc.
they've gotten Jun Senoue back for a few games right? although he tried a different style most recently in Superstars and he's just not the right fit for that style. SA3 needs his unmistakable shredding to bring back that earnest 2000s rock sound.
Lol what? I had no idea this was a mobile game until he randomly said it 4 minutes in. Kinda seems like something worth mentioning in the title, at the beginning, something >.
Further proves how useless Sonic Team is. They just can't make a good Sonic game, and any steps forward give an extra ten back. Mania team outclassed them. Now these guys, in a subscription-based mobile game, have outclassed ST. They're just a bad developer, and no I didn't hate Frontiers. I liked it quite a bit, but again ten steps back: it's lacking so much polish, its full of genuinely awful decisions (forcing 2D gameplay on Island 3, the awful drift-based cyberspace level, the month-long process to leveling up a single stat). ST needs to be shut down, or they need to replace most of the key staff with those who have competance.

these comments are proof people will complain no matter what. they literally made a good game and people are finding a way to twist it into something bad
more people seem to be talking about how it's the best Sonic game ever made, which is just untrue, it is a great mobile game though
Wish all of us played this on pc screw apple
Apple is the only reason this game exists lol
Pity I'll never play it unless there is a port. I'll just play Sonic Dreams Collection instead...
I dunno... It kinda looks and plays like a cellphone game
The best 3D Sonic game? Kinda debatable tbh.
Lol. SEGA can't seem to make a good Sonic game. When somebody else does, it's generally good.
looks at least better than the last X sonic games BUT it also looks like they prototyped those stages and then instead of fully develop them, they just replace the dummy elements with a bit more nice looking elements. still full of abstract floating platforms etc.
Can they just make sonic adventure 3??? I miss the vibe and the music
they've gotten Jun Senoue back for a few games right? although he tried a different style most recently in Superstars and he's just not the right fit for that style.
SA3 needs his unmistakable shredding to bring back that earnest 2000s rock sound.
We really don't need SA3
Why is this not on Nintendo Switch?
We’re SO CLOSE, please just give us a Sonic Adventure 3. I want a hub world, chao gardens, and maybe hidden items/upgrades 👀 pls
Online Chao races and battles
So this is a question I have was sonic 06 going to be adventure 3? It looked like everything you described not counting the garden part
Not for Nintendo Switch, NOT interested.
sonic team shoudl make games like this exclusively for switch or mobile devices and then put maximum output in next gen releases cause mannnnn us fans are tired of 2010 level graphics and animation
like SEGA would allow it
So far.....I don't like this game....I hate the controls
Why 4:3,?
Recorded on iPad
apple exclusive lmao
most likely gonna come out on pc eventually, most big apple arcade games do
Come on now this game doesn't even come close to Sonic Frontiers.
of course you take potshots at the recent 3D game to review a game, just like any other critic who hates sonic, ugh
he did praise this game which is undeniably a 3d one so i don't know what's the problem
Goofy ahh aspect ratio, GameXplain are ipad kids confirmed💀
Yh no it’s not frontiers is 100% a better game this one is limited to phones so is just so simple no real effort into movies or combat it’s just so basic it’s ashame to because this game at its core is good just it’s on phones so it’s not executed well
Yeah I don’t understand what they’re saying. This is barely half a game that they’re way overselling. Very limited amount of content and aside from the skatepark gameplay nothing here really stands out
@@nattyice23 people were overselling frontiers too, from my experience it's not everything they were making it out
at least dream team commits to what it is, a small mobile game with fitting aesthetics. it might be a small game but it doesn't need to be a big one that drags a lot, it's simple and straight to the point
Weird, generations is a 2D Sonic game
Can't do the usual "mobile doesn't count" bit, which is actually somehow worse than if we could because nobody has Apple Arcade and these are deconfirmed for any other mobile stores.
For the third time ever after Fantasian and World of Demons (BOTH APPLE ARCADE), please, mobile game, come to consoles.
wow they really just stole that name from mario & luigi
