I can’t even imagine how it feels to stand before a firing squad, waiting for your own death, only to be told at the last moment that it was a malicious joke and your sentence has been changed to imprisonment. I think it had a huge impact on Dostoevsky’s mind and his approach to life.
I wanted to laugh when reading this comment but realized there wasn’t a joke and it was actually just really wholesome. Ok comments someone find something to insult about that
@drummeragainstitk - I’ve just started reading Dostoyevsky, staring with white nights - so far I absolutely love him. It’s very short - What do you recommend I read next?
When your freedom is cut off, what gives that meaning that keeps you sane- are actions that stop you from betraying yourself, and total honesty with the self. You either leave this cell like a saint , or you never leave, even when you're spared. My personal experience, nothing more
Every single time I watch your videos on Dostoevsky, I finish it with a wonderful feeling of hope in my chest. I'm no actual believer, but he inspires so much beauty and hope, it's just wonderful. And going through what he went through and not faltering, or still believing in humanity, it requires great strength, I admire him deeply for that. And of course, you do a great job transmitting that passion and admiration as well. Thank you so much for a wonderful video Joseph!
Nietzsche's psychology was more pure because it wasn't tainted by religion. He risked his mind, whereas FD developed elaborate systems to cope and preserve his.

Jesus bro you are fucking smart. I admire your ability to read and synthesize. I have a PhD in biochemistry, and I've thought of myself as reasonably smart. But I could never synthesize the works of FD or any other literary or philosophical figure the way you do. Much respect. Keep up the good work man.
I was put in prison for a day for trying to get closure from a seven year relationship that ended in the girl suddenly ghosting me. The charge against me was Stalking but was later changed to Harassment because the officers came over to my side in the interview room. I cried my eyes out and told them of all the neglect I'd suffered being with this person and how I'd banked on a future with her. How she'd mischaracterized me to them. All that pain I'd been carrying around for years came out. I felt cleansed. Later that night I shook my arresting officers hand. That short experience changed completely the way I see the world. The fact that I was put in a cell for trying to love somebody and give them a chance to maybe change their mind and not cut me out of their life for good for very little reason. I can only imagine what four years would've done.
I will pass no judgement on your specific situation as I do not know the details. I have heard of women abandoning their boyfriends after they got what they wanted - often financial support and help of some sort. It's strange how I hear almost the same story about a woman getting help from a guy to go through school etc. and then leaving when she's there.
Freedom, and Lack of Freedom 4:43 At peace with authority 5:23 Getting drunk 6:58 Self-Destructive Behavior Power, and Imprisonment 12:50 Do whatever you want, because you have power to do whatever you want. 18:50 “My life is worth preserving for the future.” (Until death, and thereafter) 21:02 Invest their sense of meaning in something 23:13 Simple faith and repentence ☦️
I've been consuming your content on here and even kind of binge watching your videos when I have the opportunity and time to do so over the past week or two or so. All I've gotta say is I love your videos and the way you break down and explain stuff so much, it is just so engaging to watch. I'd love to see you do a video on the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri if you haven't already.
just wanted to say huge thank you for your work. started watching your videos almost a year ago and every time i enjoy your uploads! your videos actually had great impact on me and for that I'm really grateful
Hope is cope. We should ask why today isn't worthy of its own adoration. If something is wrong with today, let's fix it...today. Then, every day will exist for its own sake, in its own beauty...not as a mere vehicle to get us to tomorrow. I believe Nietzsche would agree with me, despite his "amor fati" philosophy.
Wow your reply made me realise I have actually been here almost since the beginning! It was your video about free will exactly 10 months ago when I found your channel. I still remember your shorts with that stache you used to have back in the day!
@@unsolicitedadvice9198 Keep up with good content (I personally like when you make videos about Dostoyevsky and his perspective on things in life) Sorry if my language is broken, but I hope that you can understand what I meant to say. Have good rest of day as well ❤
Great work! I have only watched till "free will and rebellion" and I already notice some parallels between the sufferings of men in the prison story and the actions of the young men around me.
Ah thank you! I am currently reading Demons for the 3rd time. After the first 2 times I still think my interpretation of it is too shallow to make a video yet, but fingers crossed for this read-through.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines. Write, for example, 'The night is starry and the stars are blue and shiver in the distance.' The night wind revolves in the sky and sings. Tonight I can write the saddest lines. I loved her, and sometimes she loved me too. Through nights like this one I held her in my arms. I kissed her again and again under the endless sky. She loved me, sometimes I loved her too. How could one not have loved her great still eyes. Tonight I can write the saddest lines. To think that I do not have her. To feel that I have lost her. To hear the immense night, still more immense without her. And the verse falls to the soul like dew to the pasture. What does it matter that my love could not keep her. The night is starry and she is not with me. This is all. In the distance someone is singing. In the distance. My soul is not satisfied that it has lost her. My sight tries to find her as though to bring her closer. My heart looks for her, and she is not with me. The same night whitening the same trees. We, of that time, are no longer the same. I no longer love her, that's certain, but how I loved her. My voice tried to find the wind to touch her hearing. Another's. She will be another's. As she was before my kisses. Her voice, her bright body. Her infinite eyes. I no longer love her, that's certain, but maybe I love her. Love is so short, forgetting is so long. Because through nights like this one I held her in my arms my soul is not satisfied that it has lost her. Though this be the last pain that she makes me suffer and these the last verses that I write for her. Now you know what a broken man feels like
I used to feel so imprisoned in a part of my life. Being touched felt like too much. Food lost its taste (never thought that could happen). I was so lonely, I thought I could just skip sleeping because I wasn’t apart of anyone’s schedule. I was starving and cold. I was paranoid. Imagine if drugs were involved. I learned a lot about myself. I feel horrified that Dostoevsky must’ve gone through something similar or even more grave.
It's always a beautiful day when you upload some Dostoevsky. Thank you!!!! Guys, if you like these kind of themes about power, not losing your humanity under extreme conditions and some religious undertones I suggest you to watch Larisa Shepitko's The Ascent(восхождение). It's a soviet, black and white film I think you would really enjoy.
Watched the Blood Meridian video the other day because it's my favorite book. Maybe The House of the Dead will be my next read after I finish my current book!
Hope is despair-the despairing of hope. The whole bicameral scheme of contraries dissects the void to activate a vicariously generated self. It is a story, a linguistic translation, or a sense-giving performance. Words sculpt a tale, speaking the self into being only to lose that voice in the coming silence.
14:55 reminds me of the story unbroken, where Louis Zamperini, a POW in a Japanese internment camp in WW2 was forced to hold a wooden beam over his head for hours without dropping it by the sadistic and cruel overseer, nicknamed the bird. Louis ends up embarrassing the bird by showing the difference in their internal strength.
This no doubt goes a long way to explaining exactly why I feel so outraged when you tube decides to delete my comments despite the fact I have used not a single profanity nor attacked any specific individual. It's like "No, you are not free to share your ideas if they might offend our advertisers."

nah whats even the point of life if things will never get better at that point youre just living cuz youre not ded what reason will u have to wake up the next morning and do something consistently if its not that hopeful future, whether its for yr own selfishness or change in the world
How can anyone’s life ever get better when nothing is ever good enough? When it’s survival, it is not a better life that’d be asked for but betterment of circumstances. No one who needs help with health or housing or food you’ll hear saying what they want is a better life. Anyone who says they want a better life will never say it’s now good enough. How can anyone expect hope to be able to deliver when they can’t do it themselves, what makes them think hope could do any better? No power doesn’t corrupt, but corruption reaches power.
where there is no probability, there's always hope left. hope for a miracle, for succeeding against all odds, or for gaining a new perspective on events, a new insight that makes it all worth enduring, hope for a surprising silver lining etc. What's important it's to find out if there are no other ways to change desperate situation before giving into actless, passive act of hoping for something. It's kind of easy to state 'this life is a gulag, a kz, a prison and i am innocently convicted and imprisoned teddy bear, so all i got is hope'. it is worth noting that in many cases such a self-talk is very far from accuracy. poetic, dramatic, romantic, but not accurate. we might be very sorry for the guy who used to do 'bad things' to children. we might see a full human in that person. yet until that person acknowledges his wrongdoings and tries to live differently, we might hope to be able to keep them as far from children as possible, instead of hoping it will somehow simply supernaturally work out better next time around. and please, read about Frankl, it really doesn't seem that it was innocent hope that made him survive the camp.
If you think you're immune to the 'temptation of power,' you might consider your relationship to the idea of animals being used for food production, whether to be slaughtered or have their milk or eggs harvested, almost always entailing suffering.
There is a distinction to be made when convicted to the kulaks; Being convicted for a genuine crime to the kulaks would have a vastly different effect than being convicted for irrelevant reasons, as most did during the years of Soviet Union that plagued Russia for over a century, along with those in House of the Dead. For the man caught in the act will be far less likely to repent in general for said crime but if repented, this act will likely disperse into all areas of his life. Former criminals who converted to Christianity, or any religion with forgiveness and repentance as one of the main themes, become ardent followers. But a man caught and jailed for a different reason will think he still got away with the crime and got jailed, not only resctricted to his own mind, for illegitimate reason. This will retain his cruelty and if he wasn't a man of faith before, either consciously or unconsciously, he definitely will not do the act of repentance at any point. But for Dostoyevsky, he probably saw his own sentence as a consequence of believing in communism and acting accordingly, and for whatever the reason the communists might've used to jail him, all of them would still fall under communistic premises, making the conversion that much more potent if it happens - and that it did with Dostoyevsky.
Jeeez, what are you blabbering about? Dostoievsky was jailed by the tzar regime long before any "communist sowjets" existed (who, in fact, slaughtered the said tzar later as a starter). And those "communists" being almost 100% Slav hating jews, supported from abroad (Germany mostly). And, gulags (work concentration camps) are by far no "sowjet" invention, not even nazi german invention. Try to read something before you make fool of yourself.
I never knew Dostoevsky was considered a prophet. Very interesting. Adding onto this, in 500 years time would crime and punishment be accept into the New New Testament? :D
"...poverty is not a vice, that's a true saying. Yet I know that drunkenness too is not a virtue and that's even truer. But destitution, dear sir, destitution is a vice. In poverty you may still retain your innate nobility of soul , but in destitution-never-no-one. For destitution a man is not chased out of society with a stick, he is swept out with a broom to make it as humiliating as possible; and quite right, too, for in destitution I am the first to humiliate my self." Fyodor Dostoevsky - Crime and punishment
I highly recommend everyone to read book Your Life Your Game by Keezano. I’ve read it, and it truly changed my life. It beautifully shows how connecting with God and your inner self can lead to spiritual growth and financial success. A must-read...God bless🙏
You look and sound like this boy who I went to school with. I was so shocked to find your name is Joe as well but the surname doesn’t match. Joe is a common name i know and maybe you changed the surname on here for some privacy. But if you’re from the midlands that would actually be mad. If you’re who I’m thinking you are this is pretty cool icl.
Thinking of people who find themselves in charge of terrible places, like the Major, I wonder if they too are being punished, caught by their conformity to the regime, while having to live with the suffering and filth of their charge. A truly sadistic person might find such a place a paradise, but, because they can't leave and must remain among their not innocent victims, delivering punishments proscribed by the State, more than those indulged by themselves, suffer from that same lack of freedom as the prisoners. The butcher of the domestic herd never feels the thrill of the hunt. What would the Major have done to be posted to this desolate place? Was it a reward or a punishment or just another bureaucratic posting?
Thank you so much for your amazing content. I always enjoy your videos. If you havent already, I would highly recommend checking out the anime/manga Monster by Naoki Urasawa. I would love to hear your thoughts on it. I think you’d absolutely enjoy it. Or else, it would be awesome to see a video on Nikolai Gogol’s work. 🙏 P.S. : I love you.
I feel like I owe you an apology for screwing the retention of your videos. Whenever it’s about a book it takes never more than 3 minutes to stop and think “ok, I can’t watch it, I’ll read the book first”
Haha! That's more than okay! I would much rather people read the books than watch me talk about them :). Most of my aim on the channel is to introduce people to these works that they might not have come across before
@unsolicitedadvice9198 I find your points of view very interesting. actually, after the book I come back to the video to watch your take on it. I don’t know if you read comments in older videos but I’ll be soon finishing A hero of our time and probably you’ll see me there when that happens, haha. Keep up the good work
Why is that in Russia rather than sending someone to jail why is he sent to a remote area where he is tortured like this why is there a gulag system in Russia

If you think you're immune to the 'temptation of power,' you might consider your relationship to the idea of animals being used for food production, whether to be slaughtered or have their milk or eggs harvested, almost always entailing suffering.
Freedom is medicine after death. For the animals.
How quickly do we need to obsessivly watch your content before its no longer unsolicieted?
There is a distinction to be made when convicted to the kulaks;
Being convicted for a genuine crime to the kulaks would have a vastly different effect than being convicted for irrelevant reasons, as most did during the years of Soviet Union that plagued Russia for over a century, along with those in House of the Dead.
Is there a video on notes for the underground by this fellow?
I prefer his vids to a similar channel and would like to compare perspectives.
There is but it’s from ages ago and it’s not very good so I wouldn’t recommend it. I’m planning on remaking it in the new year
@ oh I will wait then. Then I will also compare your budding mind, to your present one.
I never knew Dostoevsky was considered a prophet. Very interesting.
Adding onto this, in 500 years time would crime and punishment be accept into the New New Testament? :D
Was the arcade game based on this book?
"...poverty is not a vice, that's a true saying. Yet I know that drunkenness too is not a virtue and that's even truer. But destitution, dear sir, destitution is a vice. In poverty you may still retain your innate nobility of soul , but in destitution-never-no-one. For destitution a man is not chased out of society with a stick, he is swept out with a broom to make it as humiliating as possible; and quite right, too, for in destitution I am the first to humiliate my self."
Fyodor Dostoevsky - Crime and punishment
Nah man I’ve been destitute and been very proud and free money is for chumps
You can’t even eat money
could we be close to the moment when Donald Tusk finaly transforms into cricket?
thanks for the upload !
Thank you for watching!
Just a chill guy with the most villainous eyebrows on youtube
I think Dostoevsky wold like the green mile
I highly recommend everyone to read book Your Life Your Game by Keezano. I’ve read it, and it truly changed my life. It beautifully shows how connecting with God and your inner self can lead to spiritual growth and financial success. A must-read...God bless🙏
l just bought it, tnx
You look and sound like this boy who I went to school with. I was so shocked to find your name is Joe as well but the surname doesn’t match. Joe is a common name i know and maybe you changed the surname on here for some privacy. But if you’re from the midlands that would actually be mad. If you’re who I’m thinking you are this is pretty cool icl.
If you enjoyed this content you might want to read Varlam Shalamov’s Kolyma Tales. They’re a blast😃
Video on fang yuans
The description of the major sounds like keir Stalin 🤨
He couldn't help himself so what do I care for
The subtitles are better now imo!
Ah thanks! I think the lack of animation makes them a bit less overwhelming. All credit goes to my video editor for making them
Thank you so much for your amazing content. 🙏
P.S. : I love you.
Criminally early on this one 😂😂
Keep up the good work
FD the goat
Why is that in Russia rather than sending someone to jail why is he sent to a remote area where he is tortured like this why is there a gulag system in Russia
How did Russian literature even happen to you? )) Do you speak the language? Do you read anything contemporary or just the classics? We your russian viewers need to know more )
