Ive used nothing but a car tire on the wifes Spyder, they work great, CanAm dont want you to know more than they think they know, its a money thing for them....i told Moore Tires in Rockfalls, Illinois to put the hardest compound tire they have that fits the rim of the Spyder is what im looking for, that thing never slipped at all, even on wet pavement, also for people buying their first Spyder, good rule of thumb, 23 psi all 3 tires, worked good for me, tires lasted longest...especially if you use a car tire because they have more steel belts ...
I've run car tires on 2 wheels several times. Here is the thing for me though. When you do this don't buy some $60 tire. You are already going to save a lot by going to the CT. Go ahead and purchase a high performance car tire like a V rated or at least an H rated tire. You will in return get a better built tire with a little more traction as well. Plus I wonder how much grief I may encounter with the shop when service is requested and they see a car tire on it?. I wonder if they would refuse to work on it at all? (granted I will not make the change until after the warranty period runs out) Any feedback is greatly welcome.
I remove the rear wheel myself and take it to a local shop and they always change it out for me. I have never had a certified BRP shop give me grief about the tire. But that being said if you have an issue like a vibration or something like that they probably won't look at it.
Hi John Vaughn, I have a 2010 RSM5 990, it says in the owners book that the front tires are at 17psi and the back 25 max ? just saying. I know that if you run tires hire presure than recommended they will go bald in the centre.
You should always follow BRP 'S recommendations. I can remove the wheel myself and I take it to a local store to have them replace the tire. I use ride on in the tire and that will balance it.... 26 or so ounces. Now can you talk about vibration are you talking about the belt vibration? I run 20-23 PSI in a car tire.
what pressures are you running in the car tires front and rear? i just bought vredesteins for the front, couldn't find a rear tire in that brand. i wound up buying a General in the size you mentioned because i read that others use it. thoughts?
Ok, so what's on the front? Because of the relative low weight of a Spyder, I'm thinking a directional grooved tire is mandatory. Asymmetrical tires could get squirrelly when wet.
+thomas nanninga the factory directional kenda's ate on the front. The rear tire as very wide groves to help get the water moved and so far it is working great. Time will tell and I will come back and review bow this tire does.
Can't you get a car tyre exactly the same size as the OE tyre? Won't the car tyre affect grip? You partly answered the second question. If you had an accident, wouldn't the fact you are running what Can-Am tells you you can't affect your insurance?
+Joseph Golden i still have the OEM shocks. I will be changing the rear shock to the OEM occasional 2 up rear shock this winter. I like the front shocks bit the rear is junk!
Greatrydes if I may make a suggestion..if you haven't done so already...the two up shock is junk also..save your money and get an elka stage 4 shock for the rear...the shock does effect wear...and get stage 3 in the front...the difference is night and day...it's not cheap..but ..your tires will last a lot longer..and the ride and high performance handling will be much better...that's what I did to mine..money well spent.. especially since you have saddle bags.
+Joseph Golden I would love to get the elka stage 4 but the price is just a little pricey right now. But you are right the elka shocks are tons better then then what bro offers!!
I have been told by a shop that my warranty was void because i dis not use BRP oil. Thr law in the States is you can replace parts and not void the warranty unless race parts the do damage to the motor they just wont warranty to part that was changed. Sorry to hear when your factory warranty is up try a differnt tire and use less air you will love it!
+Elie Nehme I can't tell you. A lot of people complain about the factory tires and I still had one and I thought it would be useful to show everyone how it wears.
just bought a ryker rally and the talk is the tires last about 6 to 8 thousand miles, that will not fly with me, I will research this in time but I also heard the can am dealer will not put any other tire on the bike but what BPR says and you can kiss your coverage good by from the factory true or not no clue
I have had my Spyder back to the dealer with trany issues with a car tire with no issues. The dealer will not install the tire but I have never got kick back from BRP.
There’s a shop in the uk they have said that if you don’t put a can am original tyre on they will void your warranty they want about £240 gbp when you can buy from a tyre dealer same size and rating for half the price I did contact can am about this and all they said it’s down to the individual dealer no help from them at all 😡
+gary savage that's does not shock me...BRP has a hard time telling the dealers to take care of the customer. Around here the shop will note that you have an aftermarket car tire and that is it.
I've already had a Shark Audio system and the internals went wacky. Thing just quit working and it wound up only Auxilary plug in working. Was only 2 years old.! Kinda gave me a bad feelin about Shark. I may have to consider custom setup, kinda like build own setup.
+BrianBarb Sutton I ran the factory one on my sts and it sucked. I have not had this one that long at all I hope I don't have the same results. I think your correct and a custom setup could be the best way to go!
+saddlebag to be honest I thought that they did not make the kumho tire anymore and this tire was around the same price. I like how the tread is cut on this tire and has a 65,000 mile warranty.
Seems like they're made to have a mate with the corresponding tread on the other side. My guess is that they are optimized to work together when turning in rain. Probably work best up front. Though in reality, probably doesn't make that much difference even without a mate.
+saddlebag it should move water out from the tire it's just not a true directional pattern. So far the tire is doing great but I'm still feeling everything out.
The original Kenda tires ARE car tires they are just horrible car tires. Best practice is to go with some other brand car tie and set the front to 14psi and rear to 24psi and you should see 45k miles. Achilles, federal and kumho are great options
Yeah your right my bag. I did have it backwards, I checked it again, and I have my back tire at 25 psi. it's got over 5,000 miles on it and is wearing even.
+Noble Puker you are so very right and with the spyder not using a motorcycle tire and the oem tire being junk we have to play with air pressure to correct the problem!
The front tires arent bad at all. I think I got 45,000 out of the front ones. It would be nice if the rear tire was made with the same material and life expectancy is the front!
If the center of the tire wears out faster than the edges, the tire is likely overinflated. When tires are overinflated, the center of the tread carries more of the vehicle's weight, causing it to wear down faster. You can find the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle in the owner's manual or on the driver's side doorjamb your explanation is false.
WOW!!! WOW!!! WOW!!! Well okay------I’d imagine you could if they put 20’s in there but I don’t think they’re 20’s car tired🤔🤔🤔? Anywho very very enlightening all below (probably the first thing I’ll do when I get mines) thanks for taking the time to make the vid cause you didn’t have to!!!
I think there is a couple companys that make larger wheels for a spyder. 17 inch and larger but I cant remember how large they get. Best upgrade is to replace the rear tire with an automotive tire. Good luck and I hope you get your spyder soon.
8:23 to say half the price and 3x the mileage? Stock Kenda is an insult to an otherwise decent machine. General Altimax on my 2012, Kenda car front, Kumho rear on my 2019.
I have a 2016 STS with 7200 plus miles on it and I show very little wear and certainly even wear if there is any when using 25 PSI in the back and 15 up front. I would also say most of my time is spent on the highway at 70 plus. None of what I am seeing with these tires makes any sense
Thats close to the air pressure I ran. 15-18 psi up front and 25-28 out back. Every tire I have ran on tje back will look like that. But im not nice to the back tire at all!!
So you basically put a taller, narrower, asymmetric car tire on a single rear wheel machine. An asymmetric tire on a single rear wheel bike... Ooooook..... It's been two years since you posted that video. What about you give us an update? Thank you!
@@spyderryder What I don't get is that an asymmetric tire is working fine as a rear wheel on a Spyder. An asymmetric tire needs to be used in pair no??
@@mikem8145 no it does not. The tire had no issue moving water at highway speeds. I get about one season out of a rear tire and that is what how long that tire lasted.
You CAN and probably should use car tires. Pay attention to size. It could affect your speedo reading and if you're pushing that '10 0ver' thing, you could be ticketed and your speedo shows you're inside the limit. Experience is a great teacher. Buy GOOD tires. How much did you pay for your Spyder? And you can't afford really good, quality tires?????
+John Smith with this size difference in 1 mph off now it was 3 off. I normally get the kuhmo but the shop said they could not get it anymore and I rushed the process a little. I still like this tire more then the factory tire. The ride is better and the traction is better. I got a good deal so under 18,000. With back rest windscreen and shad bags. When its time to replace this tire I will do a little better homework.
They only say you can't run a car tire so you spend more money. It's foolish really. You've been doing it and NO PROBLEMS. If you go with more PLY's you will get less wear but it won't grip the road like a sport tire but I seriously doubt you will slip ANYWHERE.
+cripnipp I push my spyder all the time and the tire is holding up just fine. BRP also told me not to run full synthetic Amsoil oil because the BRP oil is better and I should run it...in this case they just want my money!!
DANGER! DANGER! WILL ROBINSON! A taller skinnier tire will lead to less cornering stability if I get one I'll put the lowest profile tires I can on it and if you have a problem with your tires it says right on them lower or higher then rated psi will cause tire to not wear right and is dangerous they also have a estimated mileage life if the tire wears out early some thing isn't right and a good tire shop will tell you whats wrong and if everything like the tire pressure is right then they should replace the tire at a discount imo
The tire that BRP puts on tje back of the spyder is very soft and wears very poorly. That is way people install a car tire that can support a lot more weight with a lot less air. I think the rear tire can support 1500 pounds or more so I can drop the air to 22 psi and not be concerned with it not having enough air in the tire. Thank you for watching!
what you mean as a liability? or as better in traction? Not sure what you mean by that? (good idea bad idea, safety is a concern i think first). but if your in a pinch and think your likfe is worth a car tyre than yea go for it. cheers
with the factory tire so close to an automotive tire the only thing you give up with using an automotive tire is maybe a little traction. The positives using a car tire out way the traction you way loss. If i had a two wheeler i dont think i could go to the dark side!
Ok you make perfect sense. But remember the traction loss could make the vehicle uncontrollable and could cost you your life. So other U-tubers this could be bad idea. please (USE CAUTION).
Actually my comment was to help some to understand the tires and why they ware because some don't know why you should I use the recommended air pressure, and in the video it's stated that they use 23 to 26 pounds rather than the 17 pounds that Can Am specs ! So the user is stating that he is over inflating his tires, but says he is not.... frankly, I don't care what tire, nor what pressure is used, I get good ware on my tires...... when I bought my first Spyder for three years I got crap front tire ware on the out side, until I aligned the front end with lasers, that fixed that problem, oh by the way, I didn't get 7000 miles on my front tires until I aligned it. Now they have a machine with lasers to align them.... so it was not a general comment , I was trying to help
Adding a much harder compound you're giving up safety and control. The fact that even you agreed the factory tire has more traction when worn should tell you something. So tell me is your wife's and your safety less important than a few bucks ? There is a reason any sane tire dealer won't install a car tire on a motorcycle, and there is also a reason why a manufacturer recommends a particular tire. I have seen people with car tires, and they were just like you, so proud that they were saving a few bucks on tires, but they slid off the road in curvs, or lost control because their car tires didn't stick to the road like factory tires do. Did you read the part of the manual that says to run 93 to 95 octagon gas in your spyder? Yes it definately makes a difference between 83, and 93 octain, do you cut tjose corners too? If you can't afford to ride safe, I suggest you sell your spyder to someone who can....
+Coy Hilton the main fact I run a car tire is the long jevity. I would have to replace the factory tire every other month. I ride my spyder very hard and have never ever had a traction issue with the rear tire! Thank you for the comment.
Our biggest concern should be BRP. They recently tried to force spyder businesses to increase previous inputs from the factory. Any that refused because of bikes left over had their franchise cancelled and cannot even get parts to service the machines they sold during the previous 10-11 years. Montana now has only ONE dealer left apparently. I have purchased 3 spyders and 3 can am 4×4's from a dealer. It was the closest spyder dealer, 55 miles away. Now because of the BRP decision, the closest dealer is 92 miles. What kind of loyalty is this to the small dealers that have been responsible for the big company success? I for one will not buy another BRP product even though my wife and I planned on 2 new spyders next year and another snowmobile this winter. If they have no loyalty to their dealers they sure have none to the consumer either.
This is news I have not heard from anyone. I will ask my dealer about this when I pick the spyder up in the next day or so. I can say in Ohio they have not pulled any BRP products from the dealers!
You can but they would not last very long. So they had cool things to the tire to help with wet weather traction and longer life. Being soft is just one part to it.
Your comment is exactly why I made the point about the hard compound. Obviously you either didn't read my complete comment, or didn't understand my point.
+Coy Hilton a harder compound does not mean less traction. I get a better ride longer life and don't give up and traction with the tires I go with. That being said everyone needs to do there own research. I do thank you for your comments so people can see both sides.
The Kenda tires are not good, average life is a miserable 9-10k where a good CT will go 35-50k. My last CT went 46k on my reverse trike (not spyder) One key element is to keep the pressure DOWN. 12.5 to 17 on the front does not mean 25psi - 15 is about right and 20-22 on the rear max. And by all means stay away from RF tires as they are unsuitable for all vehicles. The tire on the far left was definitely way way over inflated, middle tire also over inflated this is 99% the rider fault not the tire. Tire expansion is not the issue that only applies when you go over 200 mph. Try tires-easy.com as tire rack is not a good place to buy tires.
I agree with your opinions. I have car tires all around on my 2012 RT-S yhat were mounted at about 11,000 miles and now 24,000 miles the tires look unused. Stay safe.

I remove the rear wheel myself and take it to a local shop and they always change it out for me. I have never had a certified BRP shop give me grief about the tire. But that being said if you have an issue like a vibration or something like that they probably won't look at it.
Any update on running the Sumo Tomo HTRAS P02?
It didn't last very long. I like the Kumho the best.
Hi John Vaughn, I have a 2010 RSM5 990, it says in the owners book that the front tires are at 17psi and the back 25 max ? just saying. I know that if you run tires hire presure than recommended they will go bald in the centre.
That size worked fine on our RT. 215/60/15
I ran it on my 2014 spyder STS and it was not bad. Thank you for watching.
If you under inflait tires they were like this. The tire pressur stops the middle from rising.
You are correct, but only running 10 psi it the back tire was way too low. Thank you for watching.
Good Job! Watch All Your Videos Because They Are CompellingI Thanks!
Thank you!
What pressures do you run on the Kumho (or any other not can-am tire), tire wall pressure or Spyder listed pressure?
In the rear I run 20 psi with an automotive tire. I run 35 in the factory tire or oem spec. I think it's 35 psi.
How do you not get it to vibrate so much. What PSI do you use on car tires. We have been told we have to use canam tires. Can you please help.
You should always follow BRP 'S recommendations. I can remove the wheel myself and I take it to a local store to have them replace the tire. I use ride on in the tire and that will balance it.... 26 or so ounces. Now can you talk about vibration are you talking about the belt vibration? I run 20-23 PSI in a car tire.
what pressures are you running in the car tires front and rear? i just bought vredesteins for the front, couldn't find a rear tire in that brand. i wound up buying a General in the size you mentioned because i read that others use it. thoughts?
I have just over 6000 miles on my rear tire factory tire and it still looks brand new
Ok, so what's on the front?
You can still get a car tire in the same size. I have never had an issue with grip and the ride is better.
I want to ask..did you Upgrade your front/rear shocks or are you using the O.E.M. shocks?..
+Joseph Golden i still have the OEM shocks. I will be changing the rear shock to the OEM occasional 2 up rear shock this winter. I like the front shocks bit the rear is junk!
Greatrydes if I may make a suggestion..if you haven't done so already...the two up shock is junk also..save your money and get an elka stage 4 shock for the rear...the shock does effect wear...and get stage 3 in the front...the difference is night and day...it's not cheap..but
..your tires will last a lot longer..and the ride and high performance handling will be much better...that's what I did to mine..money well spent.. especially since you have saddle bags.
+Joseph Golden I would love to get the elka stage 4 but the price is just a little pricey right now. But you are right the elka shocks are tons better then then what bro offers!!
I would like to know...are you using OEM stock or upgraded shocks on your f-3
+joseph golden i still have the poem shocks! I hope to upgrade the rear one soon.
I like your vid's
+cripnipp thanks for watching!
And what side bags and mounts do u have??
+BrianBarb Sutton they are the shad bags. You can order them from any dealer.
In the uk they have told me they will void warranty if you use a non BRP tyre
I have been told by a shop that my warranty was void because i dis not use BRP oil. Thr law in the States is you can replace parts and not void the warranty unless race parts the do damage to the motor they just wont warranty to part that was changed.
Sorry to hear when your factory warranty is up try a differnt tire and use less air you will love it!
Hi why don't the factory make a proper tyre that doesn't wear in the middle?
How many miles do you have on your can am?
+martin mills i think I'm have 37,000 miles on it now. I've had it for 14 months.
Hey...also wanna know what audio system u have. I need a decent loud system for an F3S .
+BrianBarb Sutton I found a shark audio 4-channel thousand watt system on Amazon. For the price it works great and has Bluetooth.
Why did you choose an asymmetrical tire?
+saddlebag to be honest I thought that they did not make the kumho tire anymore and this tire was around the same price. I like how the tread is cut on this tire and has a 65,000 mile warranty.
Seems like they're made to have a mate with the corresponding tread on the other side. My guess is that they are optimized to work together when turning in rain. Probably work best up front. Though in reality, probably doesn't make that much difference even without a mate.
+saddlebag it should move water out from the tire it's just not a true directional pattern. So far the tire is doing great but I'm still feeling everything out.
U still put too much pressure in the tire the factory manual sais around 18 psi
Is it 18# all around or on the back tire?
15 in the front and if you run a car tire in the rear I run 20. If you run the factory tire run what BRP recommends
The original Kenda tires ARE car tires they are just horrible car tires. Best practice is to go with some other brand car tie and set the front to 14psi and rear to 24psi and you should see 45k miles. Achilles, federal and kumho are great options
What do you use for fronts?
I like the front factory tires but I replaced them with Federal and have not had an issue with them.
It looks like you’re running too much air pressure in the rear tire
hi there will local tyre dealer fit car tyres on a bike rim.
Yes local tire shops will install the tire. A BRP dealer will not install the tire!
the back tire air pressure is suppose to be 17 psi, not 23-26 psi, that's why the center wears out.
+JOHN VAUGHN thank you for the comment. I will check the owners manual .
Sorry john but you've got the pressures backwards. The back tire should be about 28 psi. The fronts are 17 psi.
Yeah your right my bag. I did have it backwards, I checked it again, and I have my back tire at 25 psi. it's got over 5,000 miles on it and is wearing even.
JOHN VAUGHN some people don't EVER READ THE MANUAL!
+Noble Puker you are so very right and with the spyder not using a motorcycle tire and the oem tire being junk we have to play with air pressure to correct the problem!
You would think Can-Am would put car tires on the Ryker & Spyder straight from the factory?
The front tires arent bad at all. I think I got 45,000 out of the front ones. It would be nice if the rear tire was made with the same material and life expectancy is the front!
If the center of the tire wears out faster than the edges, the tire is likely overinflated. When tires are overinflated, the center of the tread carries more of the vehicle's weight, causing it to wear down faster. You can find the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle in the owner's manual or on the driver's side doorjamb your explanation is false.
Can I use these on my rt limited
Yep
Ok will do
Centrifical force makes the centre wear.
And the fact that the OEM tires is very soft.
WOW!!! WOW!!!
Greatrydes yeah me too bro lol 😢
good information
Thank you for watching
Looks like a Goodyear aqua tread tire
+Don Hanson thank you for watching the tread is a little different but it's doing great so far.
Hah, glad I'm not the only one who remembers those
What about the front tires
I have a video on the front tires please check it out. I went with Federal tires but I have not minted them yet!
8:23 to say half the price and 3x the mileage? Stock Kenda is an insult to an otherwise decent machine. General Altimax on my 2012, Kenda car front, Kumho rear on my 2019.
Wait, don't Spyders come with car tires? They certainly look like car tires...
Now they have special tires rated as a motorcycle tire. Must spyder owners replace the tires with car tires.
Hello
I installed Toyo T1R on rear. All i can say..... FFFFUUUUUU Kenda )))))
+ArtemyMSK the factory kenda is sucks!!
Japaneses Toyo Tire is the only way to go ...and a big Hell NO to an Asymmetrical tire
+MrSwift05 thank you for the info I will check it out.
MrSwift05 j
Must be the way you ride I have 42000km and my original tires are still good
Are you sure that was fireworks???? Sirens a few minutes later...
Yep, pretty sure
So you basically put a taller, narrower, asymmetric car tire on a single rear wheel machine. An asymmetric tire on a single rear wheel bike... Ooooook..... It's been two years since you posted that video. What about you give us an update? Thank you!
The tire was great and I liked it. I got about 20k miles out of it and it never surprised me.
I would like to use Michelin pilot Super Sport softer tread and you probably will still get $20,000
I was looking for a Michelin hydroedge but I could not find one. The pilot would be very soft but super sticky!!
Car tire..is 100% fine.
They have worked good for me.
What size car tire for the front and back
I run the factory size both front and rear
20 lbs of air is all you need in the rear tire
CAN WE RUN A TRAILER TIRE? On a regular motorcycle
Not recommended!
Not at all.
@@kaylumjunier7165 😎
@@kaylumjunier7165 donut spare? It's rounded 😃 please just for 96 miles
@@spyderryder cool
DANGER!
A good reason to use a car tire is because it has J-type automotive car wheels and YOU CAN'T MOUNT MOTORCYCLE TIRES ON A SPYDER! DUH!
"dark side"....
+Henry Cagle it's a little different with a spyder tire ...
what you mean as a liability? or as better in traction?
+Henry Cagle thank you for the comment yes BRP does not recommended use of a car tire on the Can-an spyder.
lmao cant run a car tire haha tryin to soak you for that high $ tire haha
toyo tires
Thats a great tire too.
darkside
not enough weight . Poor Design . Sorry
To soft of a tire but its an easy fix.
So according to you why don't we buy softer compound tires for our cars if your worried about your familys safety?
