  • Trying out the new Aileron lift up flap stay (/lid stay) from Sugatsune. Intriguing design which fits over their Olympia with a specially adapted mounting plate. We got the specification wrong first time but on the second attempt the correct strength of the stay balanced the flap perfectly. But is it any better that the Blum alternative?

    Thank you for the review. I like that you do not rush about and take the time to think about the little details and sharing fairly your point of view. And, this work looks as well made as ever.

    This is exactly what I was hoping to find- THANK YOU for comparing!
    Quick Q: Since the blum arm is separate it appears to be less obtrusive on the interior space (sitting flush against the side)...Do u think the sug unit could cause issue if your storing something such as a large comforter?

      Jess Meagan I’m intrigued, do you mean you went looking for a comparison of these 2 specific products?

      Possible a bulky comforter could interfere with the movement of the aileron arm a little... possible also with the Blum though I suppose!

    The Sugatsune solution looks miles better than the Blum solution in my eyes :-)

    I have been looking for a hinge that can lift a panel over the television I would like to hide. I ran across this in my search. Brilliant review. Thank you. Can you please share where I can get the Blum in the US, and what this product is called. Maybe even a part number to start with. Thank you

      Hi it should be fairly easy to find Blum distributors over there.m, or even a US Blum ha who will be happy to advise more. But this stay is the ‘HK-XS’. There are sub variants of it though, so you should get advice from Blum technical (or a specialist supplier) on getting the right variant for the size and weight of your panel (you can also get ones that work with ‘tip-on’ handleless touch to open mechanisms)

    Personality I think the sugatsune looks less obvious than the separate Blum units when open, I'm guessing both of them don't really stop any access to the cupboard. Can I ask if you need to use the Blum in pairs or was it due to the weight of the door?

      Sam Rix hi Sam I can usually rely on you to be first commenter on uploads lately, thanks again for your interest! The Blum can also be use on one side only for smaller panels. Whatever the supplier, I always start by ringing up their technical dept, explaining the intended usage (panel size and material etc) and letting them tell me the codes to order and whether I need more than one etc.

    What are all of the Blum hardware used for your cabinet? I'm trying to find the right hardware for a bench and those look like they would work.

      Oliver Deighton for flaps going down? No, but Sugatsune have some good options for that purpose.

    What would be the kg equivalent of the "moment" unit?

    • @Alastair_Freebird
      @Alastair_Freebird  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jay K I really don’t know, my approach is always to simply tell the supplier’s technical dept the size, thickness and material of the panel and let them tell me the right hardware! I suspect ‘moment’ may vary according to the proportions of the door (eg tall vs wide for the same weight), like leverage.

    This Sugatsune version looks over complicated, too difficult for clients to adjust the screws (they wont be happy with the fitter afterwards), its bulky. Blums is more elegant looking, easier to adjust the hinges if required. Also the Sugatsune looks over complicated and looks like a lot more can go wrong with it. Competitors coming in to compete cannot really compete so they make a version that looks and acts different only to over complicate matters - why change things if its not broken . Also people are more familiar with the blum type and hence more comfortable with the product and with you (the fitter)
