How can you not love this guy.. great attitude and no ego.. just charges fkn hard. That whole crew Koa, Makua, Billy, Kai and Nate are the epitome of what surfing is. Total respect.
One small thing... he made a huge deal about being sober, then made a commercial promoting alcoholic beverages. That was kind of a bitch move. Other than that, Billy is good people. All the Kempers are. His brother Carl is a legend, and so was Eric. Auntie Lisa was a goddess. (R.i.p Eric, and Lisa). But if someone makes a public spectacle of going sober, then makes a commercial for an alcoholic beverage, it kinda sticks in my craw a little. But that's the only thing I can think of. So not so big of a deal. End of the day, Billy is a living legend
Billy could talk under water while he's getting pounded by a 20 foot wave at Jaws. Easy interview for Occy. Really great stuff. Glad I watched it all. No surprise that the guy who wins the big wave contests is the guy who takes care of himself and trains the smartest & hardest.

I remember how crazy good Eric was. He was so gnarly. He jumped off the steep part at the cliff at the Lane, the ‘QS Santa Cruz (Cold Water Classic) during his heat when he was like 14 or 15 years old. He was absolutely fearless. Eric and Paul Cheplic, Jason Bogle, Andy, all that whole crew were a level up over all of us. They are all passed on now. Heavy. Eric was the gnarliest as a young guy ever from Hawaii from memory.
By pure accident I found a physio who surfs and the pilate based exercises he taught me has totally advanced my surfing. I used to get so sore after sessions. Now i feel no pain and im way more flexible doing fast turns. Im also a better paddler. For the first time im motivated to do physio exercises every morning before breakfast without fail.
Great interview. This was one of the best. One criticism, can someone sort the audio volume on the music so it matches the interviews. Blows your eardrums out when you’ve got headphones in.
