Thank you....this is one of the best tutorials I've seen Pan pastels.
Glad it was helpful!
I love the way you teach! Thanks! Total beginner and can't wait to try.
Thank you, I'm glad it's helpful 😊
Great subject, not too detailed for beginners. Excellent guidance too! Thank you for sharing!
You're very welcome!
Wow, congrats on the collaboration with pan pastels!
Thank you so much 😀 They are my favourite art supply so it's very exciting 😊
Absolutely amazing! Thank you.
I’ve not seen anyone comment on the issue of the sofft tools becoming dry and crusty if left on a table where sun shines through a window, even 12 feet away. I now keep mine under cover from light and/or sunshine. I’ve had to replace mine.
I thoroughly enjoyed this work, your commentary and your description of why you use the colours you choose. I would like to think that your work has taught me a lot, but transferring that information to my work might be another thing. I cannot wait for your next offering, it’s so good to watch and listen to your clear explanation.
Thank you so much! I'm glad it was helpful 😊
Amazing artist…amazing teacher! Thank you for doing these videos! They are so helpful! 🥰
You are so welcome!
Wow! I just bought a set of pan pastels. After watching your video, I am ready to use them. You explained everything! Thank you.
You are so welcome! have fun 😊

Congrats on your partnership with Pan pastel, Kirsty! You rock!!!!
Thanks so much!!
A beautiful painting Kirsty and fabulous tutorial. Many thanks for sharing (-: Marion
Thanks so much 😊
Your work is beautiful and you share so much important and useful information throughout the video!! Thank you for all you do 😊
You are so welcome!
This was one of the best tutorials I've ever seen, thank you, Kirsty and I'll be purchasing the pan pastel larger set ASAP. I enjoyed every minute of this one, particularly because I do a lot of animals in pastels also. Thank you again from a fellow Aussie.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Have fun with them 😊
I ordered this set today! Thankyou for your videos
You're welcome! I hope you like the set 😊
thanks a lot for this wonderful tutorial, so complete!
i i could understand a lot of things, especially the underlayers, background, and from now on, i know i have to add layers and layers to make it pretty; i ve just finished the back ground, this work with green camaieu was enjoyable, next step: the tucan! thanks a lot!
Glad it was helpful!
Just joined your community anxiously awaiting the start of this adventure

Great tutorial. I learned a lot!
Glad it was helpful!
Today I finished this, I purchased your pan pastels, although mine was much smaller.
I hope you enjoyed the tutorial and have fun with your new supplies! 😊
Beautiful art work >>
Thank you so much 😀
Wonderful.
This is beautiful! Thanks so much. I believe this bird is a Hornbill which is related to the Toucan.
Yes, I realised I called it a toucan on numerous occasions... even though I know it's a hornbill haha whoops!
Excellent, thank you.
You are welcome!
Thanks, I enjoy
This channel is underrated. I intend to join the patreon
Thank you 😊
Hello so beautiful nice colored video
Thank you 🤗
That was a great tutorial. Thank you so much. Can you use colored pencils over pan pastels?
Thank you 😊
Yes you can, I like using the Luxarchival sanded paper with Pans and coloured pencil (It layers very well with coloured pencil on top!)
Other people have used Pastelmat and other papers but I feel like they don't accept coloured pencil on top very easily in comparison to the Luxarchival 😊
Ive only just done the background... alot harder than what you make it look! I couldnt get the 'messy' but expressive look you were able to do. mines very blended out... hopefully i can do the bird justice!
That's okay, it takes a bit of getting used to!
Make sure you're using the right paper (Clairefontaine Pastelmat) because that makes a huge difference!
But if you are using that paper and yours is looking soft and blended, it might be that there's too much pastel down so it's blending together too easily 😊
I hope you enjoy the bird part!
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt I’m using that paper! I think I’m being too ‘careful’ if that makes sense? Going for a clean look and I can’t let go and get loose! About to start the bird!!
A stunning work, thnaks a lot! I just have Polychrom Faber Castell Pencils, do you think I can achive similar result with it over pan pastels or it is better to you use pastel pencils instead?
Thank you 😊
You can technically use coloured pencils over Pan Pastel but it won't give you the same effect on this particular paper (Clairefontaine Pastelmat). Pastel pencils are a lot more opaque and will easily lay on top of the Pans to create a saturated, vibrant colour.
Coloured pencils are more translucent and don't have the same "sticking power" as pastel pencils. This basically means the coloured pencil won't be as vibrant or saturated and it can be difficult to add coloured pencil on top of your pastel if you have already filled up the tooth of the paper (the texture/grooves of the paper) with your Pan Pastel.
Some artists use coloured pencils over Pan Pastels on Clairefontaine Pastelmat, but I've only ever seen them do minimal layering (or only one layer) with the coloured pencil. I prefer to add more layers because it creates more depth/realism in my work so I don't like using Pastelmat for this combination because it doesn't allow me to add enough layers of coloured pencil.
All that being said, I do use Pan Pastels and coloured pencils on the Luxarchival sanded paper which works a lot better than Pastelmat because there is a rougher texture/tooth that allows your coloured pencils to grip onto the paper even after you've applied a layer of Pan Pastel
Basically, long story short, if you are creating a subject that doesn't need many layers (like some still life subjects or drawings on a smaller scale) then you could potentially use Pan Pastels with coloured pencil on Clairefontaine Pastelmat... but if you're trying to add multiple layers of details on top (like for animals with fur, or the depth in complicated skin colours on human portraits etc) then I would recommend using pastel pencils over Pan Pastels on Clairefontaine Pastelmat, or use the Luxarchival sanded paper if you want to use coloured pencils over Pan Pastels
I hope that makes sense! 😊
Love your tutorials, can I use a sponge for a pastel sticks instead of pan pastel?
Thank you 😊 The pastel sticks are not designed for that, so the application will likely be uneven and it won't replicate how pan pastels work - but it's worth giving it a go to see if you can use those effects 😊
Hi Kirsty i luv your tutorials they are so Accurate!!! But i have a slight question i am wondering what pastel pencils do u prefer?
Thank you 😊
I use a mixture of Stabilo Carbothello and Faber Castell Pitt Pastels because they are very similar but have slightly different colours in each set!
I also have the Derwent and Caran D'ache pastel pencils which I don't use as often - but they are also great options 😊
Very helpful video and congrats on your own pan pastel set with gorgeous looking colors! I was wondering if you have any pans smudging onto your main subject while applying background. Do you ever mask it with frisket film?
Thank you 😊
If a little bit of pastel smudges onto your subject that you do not want there, you can use a kneaded/putty eraser to press and lift most of it off, or you can just go straight over it with your following layers of pastel (depending on the colour/amount used)
I've never felt the need to mask off the main subject and have always been able to come over the top of mistakes and/or erase the Pan Pastel enough to fix any mistakes 😊
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt thank you so much for replying. You work much more carefully than me:)
How to mix colours with these panpastels especially dark and light hues? On separate pastelmat scrap sheet? Or on paper towel or directly on your art?
Hi there, I talk about/show the different ways of mixing at 18:40 in this tutorial 😊
th-cam.com/video/L0ISnZw5RyE/w-d-xo.html
I would love to try pan panels i have fabers Castell 72 piece half stick in blue box and a 36 ct general pastel pencil set
You won't regret trying them 😊
I purchased the pan pastel set from Amazon today. I am excited to learn how to use them. I don’t own any pastel pencils. Can I use regular colored pencils instead?
Yay, very exciting!
You can use coloured pencil, but I personally prefer a different surface for that
Pastelmat does work, but I find it a little limiting with the amount of layers with this combination of supplies (it works beautifully with pastel pencils on top though)
The Luxarchival sanded paper is much better at allowing more layers (and more opaque coverage) with coloured pencil on top of Pans specifically
I will be making a video about using this paper with Pan Pastels and Coloured Pencil soon hopefully! 😊
ah finally u uploaded. i thought something had bad happened to u😭 bcz its been 2months since u didnt uploaded and neither u replied my mail😗. but thank god ur fine.😆
Yeah, I'm okay!
I had a bit of time off for personal reasons then went on a much need holiday 😊
But I am back in full swing now so don't worry!
I actually didn't receive an email from you, so I'm not sure what happened there!
Can you do a portrait ... maybe a classical one ... like girl with a pearl earring :)
I've done a few portraits already but I will have more on the way in the future 😊
Hi...did you ever try Plein air with pan pastels? If so what is your experience?
I have not specifically tried Plein air as I have a filming set up in my studio which is not portable
However, if you wanted to use a limited colour palette, you can actually save space/weight in your Plein air kit by taking 5-10 of the more basic colours to mix together and you can actually screw the pans together on top of each other to make them even more compact
Can we use oil painting brushes for panpastels?
I don't recommend using brushes as they do not work very well in comparison to the Sofft tools.
Pan Pastel have developed these tools specifically after trialling many different types of brushes. They actually allow you to pick up the pastel and place it down much easier than any other type of brush/makeup tool 😊
can cartridge paper ever be used with oil/chalk based pastels, can you tell me?
The only paper I recommend for pastels is Clairefontaine Pastelmat
There is no other paper that allows as many layers but also creates a soft finish without any graininess
If you are on a budget and need to save some money, get a smaller set of pastels and learn to mix the colours, rather than cheaper paper
The paper really makes a huge difference 😊
How often do you have to clean those sponges?
If you're talking about the Sofft tools, I actually talk about that at 1hr 11 mins in this tutorial
th-cam.com/video/L0ISnZw5RyE/w-d-xo.html
If you are referring to the Pans themselves, if you find that you have contaminated a certain colour, you can just wipe off the excess colour with a tissue/paper towel to reveal the original colour underneath 😊
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt thanks a lot for all your answers. 🙏😊
Hi Kirsty, Can i use Strathmore Toned Gray/Tan sketchpad using pan pastels and pastel pencils?
Hi Leen,
I haven't tried it but I don't think it would work very well!
The only 2 papers I have tried that I actually liked with pastel is Clairefontaine Pastelmat and Luxarchival Sanded Paper
Most papers labelled as pastel paper don't allow for many layers of pastel and actually look really grainy, and those 2 papers above are the only ones I have found that work with my techniques 😊
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt Alright noted, thank you for your response Kirsty!☺️
What's your opinion on UART paper? I felt it doesn't hold pastels. Problem with pastelmat is difficult to erase mistakes.pastelbord seems to be having all good qualities except that it is very expensive
Both UART and Fisher400 are not actually acid free on the back (which I don't trust because it may not be archival long-term)
I also like the Ampersand Pastelbord (I've used it with coloured pencil and powder blender - along with other Brush and Pencil products)
But the problem I have with it is that it's hard to frame because of how heavy the board is!
Pastel and coloured pencil should be framed behind glass with a matting or mount-board around the edge which makes it difficult for the board to stay in place because of it's weight. There are ways around it, but I honestly would rather an easier solution, which is why I use Pastelmat
I have found with erasing that if you use a kneaded eraser and press and lift, it does erase pretty well, but it's time consuming!
I personally don't erase very often because I work in light layers so I can alter things/fix mistakes as my layers develop without needing to erase anything
I have tried the Luxarchival sanded paper which is amazing though!
That was a long answer haha
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt thanks for your time and answer 🙏
Great video, just have one question. Was this video originally made for patreon and then repurposed for TH-cam?
No, this video was made for the release of my Pan Pastel set
It follows a very similar style as my Patreon tutorials because when I was speaking with Berni from Pan Pastels while creating this set, we wanted to create a full tutorial that would show people how to use Pan Pastels (or this set specifically) and concluded that the teaching style that I use on Patreon would be perfect for this 😊
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt Ah okay, that makes sense. How were you able to create your own set? That really is a great acomplishment!
@@FineArtforChrist I've been in contact with Pan Pastel for a while and have always promoted them (and use them in almost all of my pastel videos)
The opportunity came up to create a set for a range of subjects (rather than just landscapes or just wildlife etc) because I create a wide variety of subjects 😊
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt That's great! How were you able to get in touch with them in the first place?
Hi Kirsty I have Arthritis in my fingers and I find it really hard to rub the pastel in with my fingers is there anything else I could use to do that?
It's ok Kirsty a bit later on in the tutorial you explain that you can use the softt sponges which gives a bit of a smoother look so I did that. I quite like the smoother look so all is good. Thank you so much for this tutorial it is really helping me understand the pans much better.
No worries 😊
Yes, you can use the Sofft tools/sponges or cotton tips to blend as well
Are Pastels archiable
Yes, pastels are archival. There are lightfast ratings on the Pan Pastels which you can find on their website or on the actual pans themselves 😊
How do you "set" the pastels? I can't imagine having the time put in to do a detailed picture and then someone ( mostly myself lol) fouling it up by hitting it or running a finger where it shouldn't be. Does that make sense?? As indicated by the question, I'm a newb.
Hi there!
Unfortunately, most fixatives that claim to "set" or "fix" pastels will cause more problems than they solve!
Your artwork can end up being darkened/discoloured, leave spots/droplets from the spray, or the fixative doesn't actually "fix" anything
Most pastel artists don't use fixatives for that reason
If you use the supplies and techniques that I use (Clairefontaine Pastelmat with Pan Pastels and pastel pencils - sometimes a little bit of soft pastel sticks), there's no reason you need to fix your pastel paintings because there's very little dust fall off, it's archival/lightfast without it, and if you store/frame/post your artwork correctly, you won't have any issues 😊
When framing, I recommend using a matt/mount border so the artwork doesn't touch the glass and using museum glass (or UV-resistant glass) if you can because that will protect your work even further! Some artists also choose to add "spacers" between the mount/matting and the artwork so if there is any dust fall-off, it goes down the little gap where the spacer is rather than sitting on the edge of the mount/matt
I store my artwork inside acid-free archival tracing paper pads of various sizes (A4 - A2 depending on the size of my artwork) so each piece is slotted between a sheet of tracing paper and you can lay the pad flat inside a draw/cupboard/under your bed. This way, the artwork won't move around or touch any other artwork!
If you still think you would like to use a fixative, Spectrafix is one of the main brands that don't cause as much colour change (however, it still doesn't completely "fix" the artwork and can cause "spots/droplets" from the spray that you will probably need to cover up with more pastel) and as I mentioned earlier, it's not necessary to use a fixative)
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt Thank you so much, I appreciate you!!!
