- In mid January of 2018, mudslides along the Pacific Ocean coast south of Santa Barbara forced the closure of Highway 101 for more than a week, driving many people to turn to Amtrak for travel to and from the greater Santa Barbara area. To help out with the large volume of passengers, CalTrans sent several passenger cars and locomotives south from Oakland to be added to Pacific Surfliner trains. Let's take a look at several of these trains as they run in between San Luis Obispo and Los Angeles.

Another round of awesome shots Mike! Honestly, I hope this will encourage Amtrak to operate a few more trains because the amount of trains they currently run to and from Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo is pretty lackluster.
Thanks, Patrick! Yeah, they've been trying to get a northbound early morning commuter run for quite a while but apparently, UP wants more sidings before they will let that happen. Do you have any more filming planned in the not too distant future?
I currently have a couple of videos that I have yet to edit and upload, so hopefully I'll get around to finishing those up. As of now my window of opportunity for major outings is pretty limited, so any filming I can do is going to be mostly local, which is easy to pull off in terms of planning.
Well, I'll be keeping an eye out for your next video.

Its been more then almost 13 years since Amtrak California Rolling stock have been running the Coastline.

Yes, there will be an episode on bells eventually. Whistles will come first though, probably this summer.

Great video f my favorite Amtrak route. The Amtrak Pacific Surfliners proved their value & Worth during the Monticieto mudslides that had U.S.101 closed and the Pacific Surfliners & Coast Starlight were the only Transportation between Santa Barbara, Ventura,Oxnard,Simi Valley,Burbank, Glendale, Los Angeles & all the way to & From San Diego.
Great footage there. In the first few seconds that train looks like its passing grape Vineyards? Where I film there are grape vineyards next to the tracks in about a 50 mile stretch along the shores of Lake erie

I live in Palo Alto,and 101 is less than a mile from my house,but we don’t usually drive down to Santa Barbara.(except for Summer.)

*Except that one funding cut in 1979 that cut off a bunch of important routes
Cut stuff like the Lone Star and National Limited which would probably be important today
amtrak could have added extra trains running along the coastline a day. this could include borrowing trains sets from metrolink and other commuter railroads in california.
I don't think Metrolink wanted to risk running stock out of their area all the way to SB.
Amtrak SC-44 Fan 2105 you can walk between the Metrolink cars even or not you can do it.

At 4:00 Kato track! I thought publicly funded passenger rails had to use all American made, but there it is on video Amtrak uses Kato unitrack.

They have Metrolink since it goes to east Ventura which is Basically Santa Barbara.

I call these two trains, the Amtrak California passenger train cousins
if only the Amtrak coastline were electrified, then they could have used the Amtrak Acela trains, which run very fast, and this would reduce traveling time from la and ventura counties to Santa Barbara county.
Dear CF2105/Mike, when you go to Florida will you ever rail fan passenger trains like Bright line , Tri-rail , or even Sun rail?
Are Dash 8’s 2051 and 2052 still used in service in NorCal?
I'm surprised that the Amtrak California Dash-8's are still going strong I thought they be repainted in to Amtrak's phase 5 paint
They're owned by the state of CA, so they won't be painted into Phase 5.

Why was the bell on, on the trailing P42?
Some kind of malfunction. Locomotive 183 has had that problem when trailing at least since last summer when I saw it on Cascades service and it was doing the same thing then.
Why are the capital corridor consists together with the Surfliner
Longer trains were needed due to mudslides near Santa Barbara (more info in video description).

Your footage is outstanding! How are you able to get so many different shots of the same train? More than one cameraman?
