@@vaporterra indeed, I spent the entire battle and the previous one with Karen asking myself why the hell didn't it have Toxic to stall. It woul've done wonders on both the Slowking and Karen's Umbreon
Yeah Falkner is definitely the weakest trainer in this tournament and it really shows through his Lugia that he has no idea how to use powerful Pokémon.
This battle should've been over as soon as Falkner's Lugia got burned. He was against a pokemon that couldn't wear him down fast enough for him to not recover it away, and was free to spam calm mind to overpower all of Will's pokemon even with resistance, but for some crazy reason he didn't. Then he had honchcrow in against bronzong, which was a perfect matchup for him, but he switched to crobat for some crazy reason just in case bronzong went with stealth rock... It would've been much, much better to get some great damage on bronzong or maybe even take it down with honchcrow before switching to remove any potential stealth rocks. Then Falkner got another chance to set up with lugia on bronzong, but decided to spam unboosted aeroblast against it for some crazy reason despite the fact that it would do minimal damage even with a crit. Then he finally gets the picture and starts spamming calm mind, but only once he's run through way too many aeroblasts and once he's up against a gardevoir who is also powering up instead of doing minimal damage like slowbro and bronzong would have done. He could have taken down a significant portion of Will's team by just brute-forcing with a maxed out lugia, but instead his decisions made it so that he was lucky to even beat the gardevoir. Falkner's my favorite gen 2 gym leader, and its disappointing to see him lose from rookie mistakes.
He also got a bit unlucky with matchups. Karen and Will are the only trainers in this tournament with teams built to counter or withstand Lugia. Also since they're both Elite 4, they should logically be way better than him.
Not really. It was a rather obvious choice for Will. He cannot outspeed Falkner due to Sucker Punch priority, so the only thing to do is go for Lovely Kiss. If Faulkner decided to switch, he puts his new Pokemon to sleep. If Faulkner is attacking with any attack than SP, he puts Honchkrow to sleep, Jynx was faster. If he attacks him with SP, it failed and puts him to sleep. The only scenario it went bad for Will was Jynx's Lovely Kiss misses and Honchkrow uses Night Slash
In a time when the world is basically falling apart, I have never been more grateful to have something to take my mind off it. Even if just for a few minutes, your videos make me feel a little less anxious. Thanks Silph

@Omni Burst you're*... and frankly, that's not the reason why and it's a bit rude of you to say that. I have my reasons for not being able to join, none of which concern you or anyone else.
In honor of Falkner, I did a Flying mono type run of Heart Gold. He indisputably has the most drip of any Johto Gym Leader. His player made several misplays, and I wanted to do Flying types justice.
I did a Grass mono type run on HG, and let me tell you, THAT was hard. Bug, Flying, Steel, Dragon, and Ice gym leaders in Johto, Poison and Fire Gyms in Kanto, Poison Elite four, and Flying/Dragon Champion. I don’t know how many times I was defeated 😱
The first question that needs to be addressed is how Will will deal with Lugia? Gardevoir can handle it, if it has Shadow Ball or gets the leg up on the Calm Mind boosts. Slowbro could become difficult to break with Amnesia, but Psyshock and a crit Aeroblast could blow through it. Xatu might have U-turn, Toxic, and/or Roost. Bronzong could wall Lugia in basically the same way as Umbreon, so Falkner's first priority should be getting rid of that steel wall--maybe taking advantage of Will wanting to use it to set up Stealth Rocks immediately? If Jynx has Nasty Plot, it might be the most dangerous Pokemon on Will's team. Falkner needs to make use of his speedy physical attackers for Jynx. My first thought on looking at these teams was that a Psychic team would struggle to break through Lugia, but the more I look at Will's Pokemon, the more answers I see him potentially having for the Legendary. I want Falkner to win this, both because he was one of my original picks for taking the Loser's Bracket and because I want to see Lugia in action more, but I've a bad feeling that the Legendary is going to under-perform again, and Falkner will have to rely on the swift physical power of Swellow, Staraptor, Honchkrow, and maybe Aerodactyl to make up the difference. Stealth Rocks are also going to absolutely wreck Falkner here if he doesn't defog immediately, as I can't see him knocking out Bronzong in one hit! Edit: Oh, Arceus, I've never been so unhappy to be right (about Lugia). What kind of strategy was Falkner going for, wasting all the power points of his best attack without using a single Calm Mind? Bronzong couldn't break Lugia's recovery and was resistant to both of its attacks, yet Falkner thought that the best thing to do was use up Aeroblast and leave him with nothing but Psychic? I also have to wonder about Lugia's set. It has its Hidden Ability, which Falkner's Lugia did NOT have in the Battle Between Legendary Pokemon, and it goes for Psychic instead of Psyshock, despite that the latter would give it much more usefulness against special walls? Falkner absolutely deserved to lose that one. He has one of the best Pokemon in the game and he doesn't have a clue how to use it properly.
@@_Koyomi_ I know full well that it's the fault of the person playing him, but it's easier to just say the character's name in every case instead of typing out "the person who's controlling the avatar representing Falkner" or some such. I like to keep up the pretense of these trainers actually battling each-other, but if anything, that makes it more disappointing when supposedly experienced and capable trainers make gigantic mistakes like this.

The issue is that he played Lugia incorrectly; Lugia is the better pokemon in a matchup against both slowbro and bronzong because they can't do anything to it, but it can set up on them and bruteforce its way through.
