    I've seen an other video in which the guy disconnects everything to get the manifold lift up a little in the front and changing the broken lever and middle vacuum-pot. I didn't figure out how that guy made sure not to damage the gaskets/sealing- but anyway to me it seems a lot of work to do and replacing the whole makes sense in a way then, even more once it is removed and you still want to drive the car for couple of years. Found the pierburg manifold for my M272 for about 600-700€ and think is worth it because it's all clean, new connectors, vacuum-pots etc . Thanks for the really great video and explanations !

    Nice. Only thing is the new manifold appears to have the same doomed to fail plastic flap lever that the original had. Oil and sludge build up on the inside flaps can be avoided by changing out the oil separator diaphragm thing behind the passenger side valve cover on a regular basis

    Thanks for going into such detail. I am going to do this on my 2007 E550 and I am much more confident having your video on-hand to reference. I have 142k miles and will replace the fuel injectors as well.

      David,
      I would not change the injectors unless you know for sure that they are not good. Just Use a can of liqui Moly injector cleaner or BG44K.
      For any reason You have to change the injectors I suggest it to be done in two separate operations, so in case You have a problem such as the engine running rough afterward, you won't be confused whether it's related to the injectors or the intake manifold.
      I have pretty much explained everything in that video and I left nothing to be guessed or questioned.
      Good luck.

    I have 09 E350 with 55K miles and it drives like brand new. I've been checking this flaps on my car every 1st day of the months for a last 2 years (Never missed). But it broke on 1st of May when i was checjing the flaps.. The damage was at the same spot in this video. The broken piece still attached with the middle rod. The car felt the same and no CEL. . The drip pan (pcv) and the caps has been replaced last year (Wasn't leaking). So I removed the secondary air pump and left side check valve with a couple air hoses then put some JB plastic weld and add a thin metal plate for extra strength. Its been working fine. If this brake again later, will replace the manifold. I just wanted to see how long it can handle..... Btw, the best video on the TH-cam. RESPECT !!!

    Thanks for this video - it's really going to help when I attempt this. One question though, would you recommend swapping the plastic tumbler flap actuator on the front of the brand new manifold with one of those billet aluminum ones from AGA or URO, so that the possibility of it breaking in the future is basically zero? I'm in two minds as I read that Mercedes specified the tumble flap actuator to be plastic so it would break before the actuator flaps inside the manifold itself...

    Great vid.. you are the first person i've seen that didn't undo the connectors at the coilpacks. Very efficient stuff! Getting ready to do this on my m273 is it pretty much the same job? I was wondering what size and brand vacuum hose you used for those lines you replaced (or did you buy the oem replacements?) and where the other end of the one you cut goes. Also are most of these bolts the same size? I dunno how you were able to keep track of all of them like that. Lastly did you buy a new gasket for the throttle body or did it come with one? And... last lastly why do you not recommend disconnecting the battery?

    • @mbhmercedes-benz7822
      @mbhmercedes-benz7822  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The vacuum hose is 3.5 mm on the inside (ID) and about 8 mm on the outside (OD). Main concern is ID to be 3.5 mm.
      Not all engines have the same vacuum hoses. The small V6 engines that do not produce enough vacuum are equipped with addition Vacuum Pum on the back of the driver's side camshaft. There is a hose that goes from the vacuum pump to the area behind the fan that gets connected to grill. Not to get confuse 95% of engines do not have this vacuum hose. Just check your car and see what you have, and replace it.
      We replace the throttle body gasket unless it is in a good shape and relatively new due to reasons.
      If you disconnect the battery you then have to reset some of the memorized items. We want to be as efficient as possible. It comes from years of teaching engineering and not plugging the values { such as ( m/Sec.) (m/sec.2 ) (Lb/inch2) ( g/cm3) (g/L) etc. } unless needed. If you are an engineer, you would understand.

    • @mbhmercedes-benz7822

      Cesar, there are two sides to me. I am an Ex professor of Mechanical Engineering (Fluid, Thermal, and Robotics) that was not careful and my hobby became my business against my wishes. Now I am also a "shop owner" in which I used to be the only mechanic. I have awesome guys working with me nowadays.
      When I am working on a customer's car I am concerned about correct diagnosis and fixing the real problem (not my imaginary), correctly just like new or better.
      My customers, just about all of them want to know, How much and how soon. Nobody asks how. But once the car is picked up, they expect it to function longer than the original unit. If I save them 20% on cost or engine efficiency, for the most, they do not care. They just want a reliable car.
      Working on my own car is a completely different ball game. When I was younger (I am 66 now) I would spend hours more on repair saying I saved a penny, however, I was reducing the reliability and would not count my valuable time. Now that I am older, can not afford to have car problems on the 600-1000 mile trips and do not care to carry my toolbox with me.
      Everything that you said is doable but you expose yourself to more potential problems. The intake will not last "way longer" unless you come up with a different and better design.
      Where are you? Thank you for taking the time and writing to me. I started playing with Mercedes as a hobby and now am back to the hobby and making videos. LOVE IT.
      That was my 2Cents.

    • @mbhmercedes-benz7822
      @mbhmercedes-benz7822  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wayne, my friend, Victor Gonzalez asked the same question below and I answered him. Here is my answer:
      Victor, when a fuse blows, it is an indication of an internal problem and you do not replace the fuse with heavy-duty wire. The weak link of the intake breaks due to an internal problem with the intake manifold and Mercedes-Benz recommends it be replaced with a complete intake manifold. As a business, you can not afford to cut corners.
      When you perform these jobs as a business, it is one thing, but when you do it as a hobby, you do not have to worry about losing a customer or possibly a lawsuit.
      With the knowledge that I have nowadays, I would do the same thing even in my own car but 40 years ago, I probably would have taken the shortcut. Maybe not.

      That's insane! Sorry to hear that. Did you do it yourself &/or use a Pierburg one? I'm trying to decide if I should upgrade mine before I install it, or if it's even an "upgrade" at all. @@mbhmercedes-benz7822 there is absolutely nothing remotely confusing about my post. It was a direct response to the o.p. which stated his new manifold failed after a yr, which is pathetic.
      I inquired about the part itself (if it was the pierburg unit or another one), if he did the job himself or not, etc.
      I also wondered if I should "upgrade" to the external aluminium piece before installing my new manifold (which I didn't).
      I also mentioned that I saw you suggest fitting the aluminum external piece is not a good idea, as it was purposely made to be the weakest link in the system. Theoretically, upgrading that cheap plastic garbage on the front could put extra stress on the internal cheap plastic garbage, causing an internal failure which could (and has in other failures I've read) break off & damage/destroy a few valves.
      That's the long winded version. I'm not sure how that wasn't clear.

    I have to change the intake manifold on my 2011 E350 and your video is a great tutorial. One question I have is that the vacuum line that is in the front of the intake manifold was replaced by the tech because the original one was worn...what size vacuum line did you use for this? Thanks

      Gian Maria, If you watch the first 10 seconds of the video, you will see the answer to all of your questions. But briefly, Nathan did the work and we consulted about how to do and film it. I edited the video. I was a professor of Mechanical Engineering and like to fix things scientifically.
      BTW, where are you? I am detecting an accent.
      Be well.

      When in business, you are not to cut corners. For your personal car you can do anything and not to worry but not on customer's car.

    So I didn’t understand you very well do you have to tap and drag them yourself or does the boat do it for you because when you start at the actuator needed to be tapped in threaded you were implying that you had to do it yourself or did the bolts do that for you

    • @mbhmercedes-benz7822

      The bolts are self tapping. They do it themselves.

    Why did you replaced the entire unit vs replacing the brocken plastic?

    • @jrock5995
      @jrock5995 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would have replaced it too. But what I would have done was swap out the plastic lever for a steel or aluminum one & the linkages to aluminum as well. There's a kit on ebay that works to update the weak points on the manifold.

    • @tedlu008
      @tedlu008 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe due to the internal of the manifold was gummed up

    • @Abadani
      @Abadani 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1
