Poundland Xmas 2018 light-fest. With Royal blasphemy.

  • Is it too early to start with Xmas videos? Nope. Especially when you have to get in early to grab the good stuff.
This video is also probably the only one where I'll actually lick the face of Her Royal Majesty the Queen. I wonder how she actually feels about products like this. Does she actually have a licensing department for her likeness?
I did try the cocktail bauble with spirit and it was overpoweringly sickly. It did taste strongly of a pina colada type flavour.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
    www.bigclive.com/coffee.htm
This also keeps the channel independent of TH-cam's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

I love the episodes you do about Poundland items because that's where I work. And learning what you often teach really gives me good insight that my own company wouldn't. The batteries for example.
And as for why the zinc batteries are still sold, until there is regulation against selling them we will always sell them. Why? They are within the top 150 selling products across the entire company. We make a buck-load off them

The reason cheap zinc-carbon cells leak when spent or old is because the zinc casing of the cell is also the electrode. As the cell delivers current, the zinc metal is consumed from within (converted to zinc chloride), so the casing becomes thinner until a weak point is formed and the electrolyte leaks out. The "heavy duty" types have an extra layer of steel surrounding the zinc casing, which doesn't get consumed and therefore reduces the risk of leakage. However, the steel layer can rust from the outside, so the heavy duty cells can still leak eventually - it just takes longer.
The main reason why zinc-carbon cells still exist is because they are extremely cheap to make. Plus of course they are relatively safe even when they do leak, since the electrolyte is ammonium chloride or zinc chloride, or a mixture of both. Alkaline batteries use potassium hydroxide (KOH) as the electrolyte, which is much more corrosive and hence far more dangerous if it leaks out. If it is a slow leak and exposed to the air, then the KOH absorbs carbon dioxide to form potassium carbonate, which has a tendency to form fluffy white crystals around the leakage site.

Each Kodak alkaline battery has about three times the life of the zinc battery of the same size. If you go to the web site you can download the datasheet for each type of Kodak battery. They state the capacity with a common load and consider them flat at 0.8V.
And many Alkaline batteries are inferior to zinc at low load, so powering a clock for example makes them flat sooner than the zinc. If I put a Kodak alkaline battery in the clock in my bathroom it will last about three to four months, but one of the zinc batteries lasts over a year. Put them in my torch and it's a different story of course, with the alkaline lasting about three times as long.

You know, hanging balls of cocktails on a Christmas tree is a great idea. Start a tradition where everyone in the family present has to grab and drink one cocktail every hour from sunset until midnight on Christmas eve (or less if they're a lightweight and pass out or may pass out). Could bring quite a bit of holiday cheer. Invest in good hanging glass ball bottles and they could become heirlooms. I can see it now, the year 2052, a family chilling in the living room with some music playing grabbing bottles of cocktails from the tree every hour on the hour until the eve is done. I would say descendants, but, like me, you're probably not going to have descendants lol.

Hi Clive. How about taking the zinc batteries apply a load and run them till the juice flows out. I'm sure this will involve some stopping and starting or even some stop motion work, but it would be interesting to see at what point the goo comes out.

You and Stuart are lucky to have a good Poundland. All ours in Cheltenham sells mainly is clothes, stationary and food. With a tiny electrical aisle consisting of a couple of mice and phone charger cables. I may never get the chance to have glowy balls or lick the queen's face.

Twin Peaks is inspired by the Wrekin and The Ercall, here in Shropshire. I live at the foot of those hills and walk them every weekend. Locally, we were all buying up the original version as keepsakes, some even were by the case! The Wrekin was the big hill, the Ercall is the smaller. Better than Toblerone for the money. Now there's a white chocolate and fruit & but version, too (I must sound like and advert).

Yes, I don't bother with the Zinc batteries, and the Sony ones really leak in a nasty way, causing huge damage.
