An interesting feature in this series of Duracell powerbanks is that they do pass-through -- you can charge the powerbank and power the load at the same time. Would have been nice to test the current limits in that mode.

I found it odd that a measly 5V power bank would have so much circuitry and a temperature sensor, it’s overkill plain and simple.
But having passthru charging would explain the need for that that stuff or at least justify it more.

I think this might be the highest quality power bank I've seen taken to bits on this channel! Handles 2.5A without much sag? Thermistor for cell temperature protection? Some good quality cells? All in a nice relatively compact form factor? Color me impressed. Much different from the usual fare around here. Of course, it's nothing special compared to what is possible or should be done... but compared to what typically gets taken to bits on this channel? Yeah.

The inductor is used for both boost and buck (charging and discharging) using internal MOSFETs in synchronous dc-dc converters. The ADC is used for its fuel-gauge feature, and can be read from a microcontroller via I2C. A short button press turns on the circuit, long one turns it off. A double-press toggles a flashlight.

The spiceyness of the jerky is from "Cajun". Cajun seasoning is an awesome seasoning as it has a link to acidity. The stronger the acidity of a dish, the spicier cajun gets. You may notice that there are no rectifiers in the schematic, it must use three internal FETs as switches and synchronous rectifiers to form a Buck converter for charging and a boost converter for the 5V output. This is how it might achieve 97% efficiency although it still sounds very ambitious.

I could scrap a double-cell battery similar to this one and use the circuit board to charge the batteries of the speaker ^^ it should work as long as the battery is 2S and its in series (because the batteryes of the speaker are in series. I think it matters)

I asked my electronics guru friend how to get a ultrasonically welded plastic case apart. He took the case from me put it on the concrete garage floor and hit it twice with a four pound dead blow hammer and it came apart exactly along the seem. Perhaps you should try using a dead blow hammer which are amazing and not very widely known about.

The IP5209 is a buck + boost converter, which only need a single inductor. If you charge this thing with 5V and 5.6Ah, then it will have ~26Wh (@ 96% efficiency).
Please don't confuse the electric charge of the cells (xyAh@3.7V) with the 5V in-/output...

    • @BigClive
      @BigClive  5 ปีที่แล้ว

I subsequently tested the cells external to the unit and it showed the higher capacity. So it is definitely bucking the 5V input to charge more efficiently.

    According to the datasheet:
The IP5209 supports D+, D- switching for Apple, Samsung and BC1.2 interface specifications.
D+ D- short USB dedicated charging port
    D+ 2.0V, D- 2.7V, Apple 1.0A charging port
    D+ 2.7V, D- 2.0V, Apple 2.0A charging port
    D+ 1.2V, D- 1.2V, Samsung 2.0A charging port
The IP5209 can be set to the battery type via the VSET pin 23.
    VSET floating, 4.2V battery
    VSET to GND, 4.35V battery
    VSET to VREG, 4.3V battery
LIGHT PIN can directly drive LED with a maximum drive current of 100mA
When LIGHT is not required, connect LIGHT to GND and IP5209 will automatically detect there is no LIGHT lighting function.
    There is a I2C interface
    Pin 1 = SDA
    Pin 24 = SCL

    incase people not understanding chinese:
It is an all-in-one BMS ic that
    1) use only one inductor for boost and buck (charging the battery and boosting to 5V)
    2) 2.4A max output, 2.1A max input
    3) 14bit ADC for current and temperature measurement
    4) build-in battery percentage feature for driving LEDs
    5) can work with 4.2, 4.3 and 4.35V battery
    6) i2c interface for advance feature
And, don't believe in Chinese made 18650 cells, most of them are overrated.

Since the LED output is most likely just a FET to drive the lamp, the only power that should get used when nothing is connected is only the power needed to wake up the controller and charge/discharge the FET's gate to turn it on/off.

Capacity is strongly linked to the charge voltage accuracy. If it doesn't reach optimum voltage then it won't fully charge the battery. I would check the battery voltage during charge to see what it goes up to. They should all be using sub 1% tolerance voltage references. I'd test the batteries on a separate charge circuit which you use for capacity comparison tests.

You can also find out if it has a step down circuit if you put your meter in series with the battery while charging.
Is the batterie current higher than the USB current you have a step down converter. If the batterie current is lower oer almost the same its a linear regulator.
I mean if you have the case open anyways than it makes sense to do so. If you dont want to touch the internals than the method with charging discharging is the way to go.

Just an fyi in order for any device to enable the fast charge, quick charge, or many other fast charging technology there has to be data contacts. I believe it is for if the battery on the device or other components gets too hot the device sends out to the data connection telling the power supply to step down the voltage to standard charging 1 or 2 amp at 5 volts or whatever the standard charging rate is. Then once the temp get back down it will send out another command to step back up to the quick charge voltage and amps.
If I am wrong correct me as it has been quite some time since I have learned about fast charging tech:P

    • @ParduzTube
      @ParduzTube 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Dunno about fast or smart charching, but what i know is that a specific resistance on the data pins (or voltage, i don't know what the cellphone actually sense) tells to the smartphone what amount of current it can "take". Some values are standard, some other are brand specific, but if you connect 5V on a phone it will absorb just 0.5A (which is USB standard limit). With the right resistors it will ask more current, til 2.4A.

In a way this is worth it just for the high current charge/discharge for other electronic projects, and the 3300mAh cells - as 18650 cells above 3000mAh are rather expensive.
Those cells could be re-used in that "2 cell" (actually 4 cell) work style LED lamp if you don't have a use for them? As that would work nicely in there.

I bought a "Bauhn" powerbank over a year ago from Aldi, it's 7800mah with two USB ports one standard at 1A the other for fast charging at 2.1 able to discharge both simultaneously too.
