He wrote many of the songs on Freckled Angels a long time ago with his band Trick the Fox; this song in particular. Once he had had his stem cell treatment, he asked permission to resuscitate these songs for his album. I love all of the songs on Freckled Angels and I'm so happy that you reactors are finally covering them. Great reaction!
This album has some real jewels from the first album released by Ren. I'm retired and far removed from CBS/Sony records since they were bought out. Ren would have been a check-plus artist for our label, no doubt. We didn't have the internet back then, it was an on-the-street job to find artists of this quality.
This is actually not the first album he released. If I'm not mistaken this is the album with his band the big push. There is his love music album on ren unreleased channel that is the album from his trick the fox days.

Great reaction! Love this song. Now that you've gotten a taste of what Trick the Fox sounded like, maybe you'll do Lost Boy. Freckled Angels is a full album; 16 tracks. He'd said half of them were done when he was with Sony before he had to step away and those tracks just sat there for 5 or 6 years (you can tell the diff with some just because of the production and vocals that are not Ren). When he was well enough to start making music from his room again he got permission to use those tracks and then made the rest of them on his own to finish it.

Ren is a one of a kind, he nails every Genre of music, He Can Rap, sing this sounds alternative, pop, ECT. this guy is amazing, never disappoints... Ren has quickly elevated, and does so even more with each new track I listen to, quickly into my top 5 of all time. You just don’t find artist of this caliber very often. He completely blurs the lines of genre. I have yet to hear a bad track from Ren. Everything he does is so planned and deliberate in its message, composition and potency. The only artist I know that could put out an album and sound like 16 different amazing artist. Ren blows my mind! After hearing his interview with Knox Hill, it really brought home the realization that Ren is genius, with profound wisdom, that most definitely shines through his music. There is nowhere but up for this artist. Just to think, everything we are hearing now has been recorded years ago. He said, that “Hi Ren” is the newest thing he’s recorded that is released now. He said the stuff he’s making now, he has to dig deep to keep everything on par with, or to surpass the music he made years ago. And, he has only grown as an artist. Having the wherewithal and patience to hold on to tracks to be released while he is getting treatment, is genius. REN’s the guy moving in to our lives, whose rent is paid with each new song we discover or gets released, and he’s making his way to the penthouse.

@@sammyd8860 The video for the Trick the Fox version of "Run Away" is titled "Run Away [with our new drummer, Tommy Frampton] - TRICK THE FOX" so at least in that case it looks like bass was played by Charlie Fowler and drums by Tommy Frampton, who were the other members of Trick the Fox along with Ren. Freckled Angels was what Ren was working on with Sony that he did not end up getting to finish, so that's why you could really see that polished, "complete" tracks feeling. It would have been the start to his career before he got sick.
REN is a once in a lifetime musician who can do every aspect of music creation, from writing it, to rapping it, to playing it, to video music creation , story telling in a song.

I have listened to all of what Ren has available on his TH-cam channel. I'm an old school music listener from the 70's 80's 90's & early 2000's. Music after 2011 I have not enjoyed or appreciated. I'm a rock n roll fan but during 90's I was also a hip hop fan. I like music..actual music. I haven't purposefully chose to listen to any new music since 2011. I have been listening to Ren for about 3months now & I'm soooooooo glad I gave it a chance cuz I love his all around talent.💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓😎😎😎😎😎😊😊

I absolutely love anything he does. I will stand firm in my belief that he does not miss when he wants to put music out. If you can -> look at his song Street Lights when he was with Trick the Fox. Just think of the momentum he is getting by already having a full smorgasbord of TH-cam content for people to checkout - at the time he finally had his breakout moment. He was patient and just spent the time working on his craft, which is his passion. And now it is there for us to literally dive right into.
Freckled Angels was his first album, released in 2016. However, much of the material was recorded years earlier, and it was not until his health improved (through proper diagnosis and stem cell transplants) that he was able to pull it all together and release it. Ren has said that half of the tracks on Freckled Angels came from the uncompleted Sony album. Like Fire, this sounds like one of the tracks Ren recorded in 2010/11 for that album (full drum kit etc). Strip away the drums and the Sony production and you still have the incredible Ren talent and unmistakable sound that we hear on all his other material.
I think he mentioned part of this album contains some songs he was actually working on when he was signed with Sony and his manager from back then allowed him to release them. So maybe that´s why some songs sound more "radio-friendly".

Just watched The mash up from Ren Trick the fox it's amazing so young and talented 10 years ago, if you get a chance to watch, he's so carefree in this.
I think the Trick the Fox songs go back even farther than that, to maybe 2009-2010 or so, based on my vague memories of what Ren has said in interviews. The "trickthefox" TH-cam channel was created in 2010 and videos uploaded to it in 2012.
Got his triple CD set sent over from England from purchase to arrival was like 9 days thats insane. Im good regardless but gotta shout out the tight crew shipping out
Some of the tracks on Freckled Angels were recorded for Sony back in the day, Sony, or someone from Sony, agreed to release them to Ren and he decided to include them on this album.
I'm just going to add my voice to the others recommending the Trick the Fox song "Lost Boy" performed by Ren and his bandmate Charlie Fowler on bass. It's SO GOOD.
I agree with your breakdowns of music, especially with Ren. His music does resonate with a lot of people. I have introduced Ren to few friends, some like me with more unique ear or eye for a performance or lyrics of songs. Having been told by multiple people about my writings, the message and way its layed out, I truly respect Ren as well I feel my writing only has gotten better after listening to him, amongst others
Satellite Girl is another fabulous "radio-friendly" track. Reminds me of The Cure! I know Ren doesn't like it and I'm not sure why. This is a great album! Thanks for the reactions!
I read that it's just too commercial for Ren's liking. It wasn't different enough. Which makes sense from his perspective I guess, but it's still a good song!
Definitely recommend you watching the interview with him and Knox Hill if you haven't already! It actually speaks on where this came from with freckled angels, touching story for sure!
I am very grateful that he is an independent artist. Whilst the Sony album will have seemed the most exciting thing in the world at the time, and whilst it may have delivered a hugely successful artist out Ed Sheeraning Ed Sheeran, it would have been "mainstream". We would would never heard Hi Ren, Sick Boi, Power, Money Game Parts I & II, Crucify Your Culture etc etc etc. In truth we would never have heard the artist that we know now as Ren. The one that we love for so many reasons, but mostly for his originality, creativity and refusal to be confined by others' expectations. Would we have had that if he had taken off with Sony ? I doubt it
This might be one of the songs he did while working for the label. He said he asked if he could use the songs they worked on & put them on the Freckled Angels album & they allowed him to use them.

This whole album is fantastic, honestly. My personal favorites are Dominoes, Freckled Angles, It's Alright, and the Love Musics, but I listen to the whole thing. Ren is amazing and I'm so glad we're all discovering him :) You should also check out The Big Push's album Can Do Will Do - some great tracks on there though it's only 5 songs lol. I love Precious and All My Heroes most from there. And they have an album of all their busking, called The Busking Sessions. :) Love the positivity, Cliff. Keep it up. ❤
This is a great one. One of my favs too. Interesting thing is, he has stated that I think 6 songs on this album were made with Sony before he got sick and then dropped…he wanted to finish the album himself though, and did so. So everything but like 6 tracks are recorded and mixed and produced by himself. Many of those songs on that album are even much older than the album states.

I have listened to all of what Ren has available on his TH-cam channel. I'm an old school music listener from the 70's 80's 90's & early 2000's. Music after 2011 I have not enjoyed or appreciated. I'm a rock n roll fan but during 90's I was also a hip hop fan. I like music..actual music. I haven't purposefully chose to listen to any new music since 2011. I have been listening to Ren for about 3months now & I'm soooooooo glad I gave it a chance cuz I love his all around talent.💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓😎😎😎😎😎😊😊

If you can -> look at his song Street Lights when he was with Trick the Fox. It's so good. He was soooo young but equally just as good as he is today!

Just think of the momentum he is getting by already having a full smorgasbord of TH-cam content for people to checkout - at the time he finally had his breakout moment. He was patient and just spent the time working on his craft, which is his passion. And now it is there for us to literally dive right into.
Freckled Angels was his first album, released in 2016. However, much of the material was recorded years earlier, and it was not until his health improved (through proper diagnosis and stem cell transplants) that he was able to pull it all together and release it. Ren has said that half of the tracks on Freckled Angels came from the uncompleted Sony album. Like Fire, this sounds like one of the tracks Ren recorded in 2010/11 for that album (full drum kit etc). Strip away the drums and the Sony production and you still have the incredible Ren talent and unmistakable sound that we hear on all his other material.

I think he mentioned part of this album contains some songs he was actually working on when he was signed with Sony and his manager from back then allowed him to release them. So maybe that´s why some songs sound more "radio-friendly".
Great reaction Cliff. The whole album and Ren's Demos 1&2 albums are FIRE. Ren has collated a number of tracks for a Demo 3 album release too.

Just watched The mash up from Ren Trick the fox it's amazing so young and talented 10 years ago, if you get a chance to watch, he's so carefree in this.
I think the Trick the Fox songs go back even farther than that, to maybe 2009-2010 or so, based on my vague memories of what Ren has said in interviews. The "trickthefox" TH-cam channel was created in 2010 and videos uploaded to it in 2012.

Some of the tracks on Freckled Angels were recorded for Sony back in the day, Sony, or someone from Sony, agreed to release them to Ren and he decided to include them on this album.
I'm just going to add my voice to the others recommending the Trick the Fox song "Lost Boy" performed by Ren and his bandmate Charlie Fowler on bass. It's SO GOOD.
I agree with your breakdowns of music, especially with Ren. His music does resonate with a lot of people. I have introduced Ren to few friends, some like me with more unique ear or eye for a performance or lyrics of songs. Having been told by multiple people about my writings, the message and way its layed out, I truly respect Ren as well I feel my writing only has gotten better after listening to him, amongst others

Satellite Girl is another fabulous "radio-friendly" track. Reminds me of The Cure! I know Ren doesn't like it and I'm not sure why. This is a great album! Thanks for the reactions!
I read that it's just too commercial for Ren's liking. It wasn't different enough. Which makes sense from his perspective I guess, but it's still a good song!
It's got the makings of a good song, but I feel like it's just a bit too repetitive in parts.
The roundness of the bass, sharpness of the treble and flowing vocals in the middle. Other stuff is eclectic this is like you said Sony

"Make My Way" off this album would be a great one to check out!
I am very grateful that he is an independent artist. Whilst the Sony album will have seemed the most exciting thing in the world at the time, and whilst it may have delivered a hugely successful artist out Ed Sheeraning Ed Sheeran, it would have been "mainstream". We would would never heard Hi Ren, Sick Boi, Power, Money Game Parts I & II, Crucify Your Culture etc etc etc. In truth we would never have heard the artist that we know now as Ren. The one that we love for so many reasons, but mostly for his originality, creativity and refusal to be confined by others' expectations. Would we have had that if he had taken off with Sony ? I doubt it
This might be one of the songs he did while working for the label. He said he asked if he could use the songs they worked on & put them on the Freckled Angels album & they allowed him to use them.
I've been trying to get people to react to this, fire, and pixie from this album for about 6 months now, as well as Ren and Sam Tompkins improvising around Stevie wonder xx
This whole album is fantastic, honestly. My personal favorites are Dominoes, Freckled Angles, It's Alright, and the Love Musics, but I listen to the whole thing. Ren is amazing and I'm so glad we're all discovering him :)
You should also check out The Big Push's album Can Do Will Do - some great tracks on there though it's only 5 songs lol. I love Precious and All My Heroes most from there. And they have an album of all their busking, called The Busking Sessions. :)

This is a great one. One of my favs too. Interesting thing is, he has stated that I think 6 songs on this album were made with Sony before he got sick and then dropped…he wanted to finish the album himself though, and did so. So everything but like 6 tracks are recorded and mixed and produced by himself. Many of those songs on that album are even much older than the album states.
Bullet next please! Ren is special and I love that he is finally getting the recognition he deserves.
