The cord actually has a complex way to tie it around the head in 2 spots it goes around the back of the head and then over the top of the head ,but you did do a very nice job of making a Mempo from foam !
I was looking for a guide on how to make a menpo mask. I saw the thumbnail and I almost didn't watch this video because I thought that it was too hard for an average crafter like me, but I watched it anyway. I was glad to be proven wrong because I can see doing this mask myself since it's deceptively easy. Thanks man, you're my new favorite foam crafter!
Oh my god! I’ve been looking for a samurai mask template on utube and pepakura for a long time! Thank you for releasing this video and making the templates free! Legend 👍🏼
Well done. A tribute to your craftsmanship. To answer a couple of your questions, the device on the chin (odayori) would have a hole in it (ase-nagashi no ana) so sweat could drain. That piece, along with the hooks (orekugi) you placed on the side for attachment, would be for the cords from the Kabuto (kabuto no o) as the Mempo and No-Dawa were rarely worn without the Kabuto. The cords from the Kabuto would loop through the hooks and tie beneath the chin to secure them for combat. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed watching you construct the mask. Hope to see more.
Thanks for the info. I did a lot a research for samurai armor a few years ago when I was making videos for a channel called Polly Plastics. You should check that channel out. I have several videos of samurai armor builds on it.
I will say this your Tempaltes are one HUGE but so simple and turn out really stunning... i always print -5% first than i try again till it fits my 21 inch head
I need to play this game. There is some pretty epic stuff in it that I wouldn't mind building. I made almost a full suit of Samurai armor when I made videos for Polly Plastics on TH-cam
Tip: To age the rope you could make a cup of tea or coffee and submerge the rope in it. I use this technique to age paper all the time. Hope this helps!
That game is super doped up and its fire. Ten out of ten. The masks are deadly and the outfits too. The extra attributes they add on the masks outfits etc. Is great. The mask of woe I tease my bro. My favorite is one of the broken make. The demons.
Interesting idea for the nostrils! I've gone through at least 6 fialed iterations trying to cut foam to look bulgy in the right places. Might just go with foam clay balls to simplify the shaping, and burn in some nostrils. Thanks for this!
Super cool. I have some armor builds I did for Poly Plastics here on TH-cam a while back for some samurai armor. I've always been fascinated with old armor.
I love the facts in the videos, really interesting.I absolutely loved GoT and didnt know any of these facts!!Shows how mutch effort they put into the game!Great video, might make it once i get more advanced at foamsmithing!❤️❤️
Glad you enjoyed! Do a little research on each build, trying to put out something close to in-game stuff, and being a huge video game fan for most of my life, the process definitely gives you a much bigger appreciation. I am blown away by the talents of everyone involved. It's more than just a game, it's story telling, it's history, entertainment, and escape.
Makes sense. Especially with the more ellaborate headpieces on the tops, they would get extremely heavy. So the mask would distrubute the weigh more across the face than just tucked under a chin
Glad you liked it. A lot of these builds sell pretty quickly on my Etsy store after the builds go up on TH-cam. This was one of those that sold pretty quick.
Thank you. 💚 this is actually the most helpful mask tutorial I've watched so far. I'm trying to make an anime mask called Talpa from the ronin warriors. And I'm playing hell trying to get it right. 😅
@@MuchProps Yes I can feel your enthusiasm. I am making a Life size Samurai sculpture from recycled cookie tins! and other things I have found. Now I just need to find a place to put it all together, and to top it off I am putting him on top of a lazy Suzann, so he will spin around. Keep creating friend, its all in the heart. sincerely, Karen
Nice. I wish I could build right now. I work out of my garage but is 4 degrees tonight and we got 41 inches of snow yesterday. Not a great work environment. Lol
It looks really cool, pretty passable for a real one. They were usually made of metal (actually, one of the rare bits that was almost entirely metal rather than rawhide). The noses usually come off as well, including the upper lip and top teeth, which was the more common way that Samurai would wear them into battle if they even wore them at all. The pock-marks that you burned in probably aren't from wear & tear, but an armor texture that the Japanese call 'uzumaki' - which is basically unfinished raw hammer work. They just leave the hammer indents in the metal from shaping, or apply lacquer in such a way as to mimic this rough finish. You did really well with the hooks and lacing, it's a detail that most people get wrong. In fact, even the game gets it wrong; menpo masks don't have strapping built in. The lacing under the chin should actually be the "chin strap" of a helmet. The straps come down from the helmet, around the front of the hook, then pass to the back of the head. This helps to hold the mask tight against your face and hold the mask up. Running the strap behind the head also makes it harder for an enemy to cut the straps. From the back of the head, the laces come forward, over the top of the hook, and then down and under the chin. This helps to hold the helmet very tightly on the head so that it doesn't wobble, and keeps the straps from biting into your skin. This method is better than just going straight down from the helmet and tying under the chin, because it means that your helmet can't be tipped back so that the strap chokes you. The other reason that the menpo doesn't just have straps like a masquerade mask, is because it is also the attachment point for the throat armor (the Nodawa) which hangs from the bottom of the menpo. Tying the helmet cord under the chin hangs this weight from the helmet; cords on the menpo would mean that your ears are taking the strain or else you have to tie it very tightly around your head. The tie at the chin usually used a large, ornamental knot to help keep the nodawa held down so that it wouldn't swing forward and knock around. So really, wearing one of these without a helmet (as the character does) isn't just a bad time, it's pretty much impossible with how they're designed.
Thanks for the knowledge. Someone is passionate about the history of samurai armor. I'm always in awe of it when I see armor in museums. The craftsmanship in every little detail is insane.
Friendly tip use coffee for ageing textiles paper and similar thing it works wonders also combine it with actual dirt, like after dipping it in black coffee and letting it dry run it trough some dirt it will add extra points of ''age'' on it
Your design looks so badass! I’ve tried making my own pattern using my own head (I don’t have a foam head) and I thought it came out okay but it’s nothing compared to yours! I used 10mm foam
Thanks. I got a couple of plastic dummy heads for pretty cheap on Amazon. It all just takes a little bit of practice. And I would recommend 6 mm foam for mask and helmet builds. At 10 mm it gets a little harder to pull seams together on intricate curves and small pieces
I know it's a helpful step, but it's a good 3 or 4 extra minutes to the video time. Hopefully people see template making isn't as difficult as people make it seem

I don't know how well it would hold up. I have only applied resin over the top of foam once, and that was just so I could make a mold to cast in fully in resin to limit the compression of the foam. It might be fragile in thin layers. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes.

Check out a TH-cam channel called Polly Plastics. I used to make videos for their channel and did a series on samurai armor
@@MuchProps thanks!
That looks great Sensai. Im guessing the strapping differed depending on whether it was combined with a helmet(?)
I would assume so. Those old suits of Samurai armor had all kinds of unique fastners that made adapting the suit to each battle
@@MuchProps we have some authentic suits in the Victoria and Albert museum in London, they are a marvel to look at. Your menpo is oddly accurate in that it is layered material. All Japanese Samurai armour was laminate, usually some sort of bamboo or leather. Amazing huh?
@@BrushQuill I spend hours at museums gawking at armor suits. The intricate details while still being a functional protective suit is inspiring. The level of craftsmanship with the limited tools they had, words cannot describe
@@MuchProps maybe your next full outfit lol
show, parabéns pelo vídeo.
Obrigado, que bom que você gostou meu amigo.

Thank you, thank you, thank you 😊

Thanks
Hi i came here after the pattern scaling video and i would like to know what the pattern is scaled too
My patterns would be scaled to fit me so 100%. To help you figure out the scale for you, you would just need my head measurement compare to yours. My head is 24 inches around. Measure yours around the forehead and that will give you the reduction or increase. Plug in my number and your into this website to help you out: www.cosplayapprentice.com/Cosplay%20Calculators/cosplay-pattern-scaling-calculator
Amazing and beatiful
Thanks a lot 😊
