Changing Guitar pickups from Humbucker to P90

- This is Telestar, Lisa that was designed by Gibson R&D man, JT Riboloff in the very late nineties.
This neck feels good and light-weighted. But one thing that I didn’t like is these pickups are a bit dull.
So I decided to change these to P90 instead of other humbucker pickups.

The pickups are why you buy a Telestar guitar. They were designed by JT Roboloff who designed Gibson's "Dirty Finger" pickups. I have found Telestar mini humbuckers to have their own character.... too bad they were not good enough for you. There were only about 400 Telestars made. Now I guess there are about 399.

They do make Humbucker sized P90s that sound terrific. That said not sure the humbuckers in this old guitar are standard size Humbuckers.
Hey there! I had a quick question. Do you know if soap bar p90s would be able to fit into a mini humbucker slot?
Usually yes.: P-90 is bigger than mini humbucker, but on Les Paul style guitars where the mini humbucker sits in a ring that looks like a soap bar, yes, that ring is basically a soap bar cover with a hole cut for the mini humbucker. So the route in the guitar is identical and P-90s and mini humbuckers are easily interchangeable.
On a Strat, Tele, Jazzmaster, or something, with a hole cut in the pickguard for the mini humbucker, you'd need a bigger hole, but that's not too hard.
Not sure about a Firebird or similar, you might need to route a bigger hole in the body.

@@elijahhernandez983 Those appear to be mounted Firebird style, in flat mounting rings. - I don't think P-90s would necessarily drop right in. P-90s take up roughly the whole space of mounting rings like that, but are rounded at the corners, and mount to the wood underneath. Does that guitar have a center block? If you don't want to do construction/major modification, you may want to look at various mini humbuckers. You may want to check the dimensions.
You can get lots of different mini humbuckers. Some are supposed to sound like Rickenbaker pickups, which I think is the idea on your stock pickups, but you might be able to get some that just sound better. Or you could go with Gibson style mini-humbuckers, or you could try Firebird style pickups. Firebirds have the same dimensions as mini humbuckers, but are made completely different inside. They have a cool, powerful sound, not entirely unlike P-90s, though they are also completely different from those inside.
Lollar makes beautiful, amazing Firebird pickups. Fralins are nice, and Seymour Duncan. There may be cheaper ones like Golden Age or Kent Armstrong, but I haven't heard them.
Personally neither sound good, humbucker sound better than the p90 in this test, it doesnt have a sudden rise of decibels. P90 sound abit way too bright, it has a sudden rise of decibels. Might be just the setting.
I thought p90s supposed to be more dynamic and humbuckers more compressed.

You can always mess with the tone capacitor value to adjust for the P90s brightness. But I actually like how bright and present the bridge pickup is.
Humbuckers give you ‘women tone’ which is compressed and more sustain. Bb king style. Whereas p90s more attack quicker decay. Good for plucky rock n roll.

Video is so fast and jerky it is difficult to see how you install it.
The p90's sound alot more clear and bright
But I'm not a big fan of humbuckers in general, not that i have played on many, but generally i prefer ye good old single coils

It seems so.
But dont be fooled, this construction can deliver very good guitars when done right.
It was also used in some of the ibanez lawsuit guitars from the 80's and a lot of other matsumokus

have you thought about p94 (or "Humbucker sized P90" ) they sound a bit different but they get kinda close without the need of routing

@@martinus19 to be honest I'm still yet to do it. It's actually a hollowbody kit guitar so it's not painted or anything I just haven't had time as yet to put it together. I have got mounting plates for dog ear P90s though now.
Stick sandpaper to the body facing up and sand the mounting plates to the bodies shape. Then they attach like normal.
Routing not needed so far seems to fit in the existing holes

These actually look like Dynasonics than p90s in reality. ..P90s use a bar magnet with steel screws...What you have there is a p90 soapbar pickup housing with a Alnico rod magnet looks like 6mm that is more a Gretsch Dynasonic!
and the pickups that were in the guitar first look way more like "mini humbuckers" than regular humbuckers :D
