    Wow nice, you made me want to go to Key West now, I love that old Fort. You took great footage of it, feels like following you around there, awesome.

    Love the keys. I live in Florida and the keys are one of my favorite places to go. Premium RV sites are also pricey $200 plus per night but well worth it.

      Everything in the Keys seems to be pricey, but we agree, it is worth it.

    Ah, the historic seaport. One of the many places I visit over and over again. I have a condo close by and taking that walk never gets old. You can catch a nice sunset on the 2nd level of Turtle Krawls. You’ll find Key West Marine Hardware and West Marine near by. Literally a 5 minute walk! Enjoy!

    I know that Area well. As you came into the marina you see a large grey boat on the left on that long pier. Its called the NAWC 38. I spent many a day on that boat with an Awesome captain and a really good crew. Hopefully you will catch it on video on the way out.

    Great video thanks again for taking us with you on this trip Key west is on place I have never been but is on my bucket list of places to visit The botanical gardens looked beautiful I'M kind of a plant geek myself I own and run a landscaping company now days after being retired and not working for 2 years got bored and started this I actually did this my last 2 years in high school and in college I don't blame you for staying at the marina during the storm better to be safe than sorry is how I look at that. Nice looking Kids I think its great that they were able to come down and spend some time with you I'M sure it was a lot of fun. Looking forward to the next video from the trip. Have a great holiday weekend. God Bless!!!

    Love your aerial slides showing the route over a chart. There is a shack near the marina that sells the best conch fritters in the US. Beware of the chickens that jump on the tables.

      We loved Key West, and wish we could have stayed another week. Unfortunately, we needed to get the boat to the yard for repairs, as we will show in an upcoming video.

    Love your videos. Great to see you enjoying life on the water. Can you recommend any training resources for marine navigation?

    • @tryingnottosink9107
      @tryingnottosink9107  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We just watched youtube videos and trial and error. Navionics has free internet based chart plotting software where you can explore the waters from your computer and learn how to use their navigation system, which is what we use most often.

    FYI, very common for diesel fuel tanks in a boat (that sits at the dock for months) to grow algae which will clog your filter. Your calm water ICW motoring will not cause much problem but once you get into any rough water the sloshing of the fuel in the tanks starts to break the algae loose and it will start clogging the filters very quickly. You can hire a mobile fuel polishing but it will not clean the algae from the tank walls. If you go out in any rough weather you can expect to clogg the filters constantly (I've see this happen more than once per hour in an older vessel that has been docked for an extended period of tme.) Safest action would be for you to have the tanks professionally cleaned or at least go to sea on a rough day but stay close to shore to break loose some of the algae and determine if you're up to the challenge (and alert someone like SeaTow of your plan ahead of time). Remember once In the Bahamas, there is no 911 and help will be hours away.

    • @tryingnottosink9107
      @tryingnottosink9107  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the advice. We are giving careful thought to adding addition filters prior to the tank selection manifold. We have been in some relatively rough seas. I think that is how we got the wood chips in the line.

    • @brnmcc01
      @brnmcc01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They make a commercial diesel biocide, I add it to the tanks of standy gensets I do maintenance on. If there's no power outages, they don't use much fuel during weekly no-load exercise, and monthly on-line load tests. And once a year full load test with load bank, doesn't use enough fuel to really turn it over enough. Regular bleach wouldn't be good I think, it can get dispersed in the form of micro droplets throughout the fuel, and when the sodium hypochlorite decays, it decays into salt and water, which can get corrosive to things that aren't cheap or easy to replace :)

    • @brnmcc01
      @brnmcc01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not just algae, there's forms of bacteria that will actually feed on diesel, and covert it into sugars, water, CO2 etc. There's a lot of that naturally in the Gulf of Mexico, from all the natural seabed oil seeps, plus stuff from accidents like the Deepwater Horizon, and the big Pemco spill off the coast of Mexico years ago. Little buggers make sugar in your gas tank lol...yuck

    If you ever got caught in 15 ft following seas in the Great Lakes in an unstabilized 410 Chris Craft Commander your definition of rough seas would change dramatically.

      I hope I never get caught in something like that. I get skittish with 5-7 footers and stay inside. Although, I know the Hatteras can take much more than I can.

      Im sure that wasn't fun but at least its a sail boat with a led keel. The 410 is a one top heavy plastic gal. When one port hole on a 15 ft tall cruzer is under water and the other shows nothing but sky its oh shit time!

    Have you had your liferaft checked and repacked? Do you have a Go bag packed and ready to go.

    • @tryingnottosink9107
      @tryingnottosink9107  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No We don't. But probably should. We rarely go more than a few miles outside, and never in bad weather, so we haven't been too worried. We have two life rafts and a small go bag with flairs, etc but not real supplies. Plus two tenders. When we plan to head out to Bahamas , etc. we will definitely get things checked.

  • @mrlucky2day
    @mrlucky2day 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    29 days seems like an awful long time to cruise from philly. How long do you think to go from weahawkin nj marina to key west, having never done it?

    • @tryingnottosink9107
      @tryingnottosink9107  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep in mind we stopped a lot of places along the way. And we typically cruise 6-8 hours a day. We could do it in 2 weeks if we cruised 10 hour days and did not take days off. Much quicker if we did more over-nighters.
