Oh, I see you added a stuntman in the mix at 3:15. I hope he's okay. Thanks for the video.

You can set a block above your GRCS to prevent spinning. so the force is directed up ward not sideways.

Seems like there is some confusion concerning GRCS and "side loads".
The GRCS uses a Harken 46 traction winch. You can pull on the winch in any direction that is perpendicular to the shaft which holds the drum. The winch is just as strong for all 360°. In this case you should have a fairlead ensuring the tensioned rope stays at the base of the winch. Pig tails or various bars and loops of steel act as fairleads. Pulling on the winch at the base will reduce loading on the winch as well as the anchoring system (strapped to a tree trunk). If you have a shock load which causes the winch to twist around on the tree, unless there is a fairlead keeping the pull on the winch perpendicular to the shaft, the winch drum will see axial load. The rope force will literally be trying to pull the drum off of the winch shaft. Strider indicates there is just plastic retaining the winch drum. That very well could be...to limit damage that can be done to the winch. These winch drums must not be set up with trust bearings or at least not anything significant. Anyway, if you set up a block above the winch, this will prevent any loading that could cause the winch to twist around on the tree trunk. Side loading isn't a structural problem for the winch. It is a problem to keep the winch from sliding around the tree.

You guys are under-paid! As a former rock-climber, and having cut my own firewood from 60'+ standing stems for 12+ years, I am very impressed with the way you manage risk. Stay safe!

Interesting approaches- glad you GRCS is repairable and the fail did not occur in a way-where your felling strategy would have gone wrong. Your enthusiasm is awesome.

Refining your set up is never a bad thing.. I appreciate your the way you work and use alot of what you post in my own operation (with my own twist on it).
I'd like to send you a video or two with things that I try. Let me know if you'd want to see them.
    All the best.

Most of us that are at least familiar with friction devises and GRCS know to not side load them. But we all make mistakes.

So how many extra trees do you usually remove before you actually remove the tree you’re contracted for? Seemed like a lot of healthy cedars. I once saw a self proclaimed master pro alpha dude cut a perfectly healthy 50 ft silver maple because it was on the left side of the tree and would have had to make a kerf cut.

Same reason he probably is not wearing safety glasses also...he doesn’t care about setting a professional example for our industry. Safety first. I’d choose 100 stitches in my leg before an eye ball lost forever. The longer you do something dangerous the greater the odds are not in your favor.
