Somewhere in the past 10 or 15 years, family sedans went from being a snooze fest to having 300 horsepower and quarter mile times that would embarrass a lot of vintage supercars. But have they caught up to our more recent old school heroes? Some smack talk around the garage got heated when we mentioned that the 2020 Nissan Maxima might be as fast as an R32 GT-R. So to see who’s the real winner, we lined up a press car alongside the only bone-stock R32 we know of in existence: Mr. Larry Chen’s minty 1990 GT-R.

The fact that a performance sedan from 25 years ago is even in the conversation with performance sedans of today is a testament to the legend of the Skyline GT-R
The Maxima isn’t really a “performance sedan”, it’s closer to say a Lexus ES
That gtr is a coupe tho
So in Aus we actually got both the cars, and I don't know how you can seriously say they're in the same class. A R32 GTR (in Aus dollars) was $110,000 new in 1991 and a Maxima is $38k (like in the vid) in the 2020's.
Account for inflation on that bad boy and it's a $218,000 GTR vs a $38,000 maxima.
@@cameronriccio6050 it kind of is even though it’s kind of a family sedan also lol. Idk if you driven one but for what it is it’s incredibly fast. If it had the same hp of the scat pack or the q50s it would dominate its competitors.
'sedan', I don't think so. Also, so what if it's a sedan? Like the number of doors/pillars affect the performance of the car.
@9:36 Sounds like the guy in the Maxima was using manual mode. The Max is quicker if you just put it in drive and floor it. The benefit of a CVT is that the gear ratios are infinite. If you use the paddles, you force it to use 6 fixed ratios.
Aaron Britt not necessarily floor it’s but roll into it and then floor it. 40-80mph in the Max is quick
@@Sunni_boi I had a '14. Same trans. I found that flooring it from a stop was the quickest. Little bit of brake torque then send it.

Mk4 0-60 time is 4.9 seconds stock , with a possible top speed of 180mph. V6 Camry 0-60 is 5.8 , with a top of 135mph.

People hate on the maxima so much but, I love that car! I'm up to 60k miles and no issues thank God. Sooooo many features and the thing flies!

I've had the pleasure of racing the new maxima around the M1 conoourse. I must say the car is pretty quick for what it is and a good car overall.
I love my 17 maxima. The cvt takes getting used to. And while it’s not very good from a dig, it’s absolutely deadly from a roll.

The new Honda’s will probably beat it in a straight line because 300 hp is pretty normal today vs in the 90s that was a lot for an na v6 to push out. Now in the twisties and on the track , the only Honda with a chance will be the new type r. You gotta remember, these things put even Ferrari’s and Porsche to shame in the day

You have modest wealthy buyers and snob wealthy. Modest wealthy tends to buy like Japanese luxury because it retains value and its understated. Snob wealthy will buy a E-Class Mercedes with fake leather seats.

Its actually a pretty good CVT, I was pretty impressed when I got one as a rental, good motor + good CVT = better then you'd think! I wasn't surprised from a roll it can pull on a R32
The Maximum is actually a nice car despite the cvt. The car stills preform well with the cvt.

The maximum has a better suspension and more power. If you need to transport people I would buy a Camry over a Accord. Honda has lost some of credibility recently.

Don’t follow the heard, read and do hour own research, different CVTs for maximum. The Altimas cvt has to be the worst
Cvt is junk its literally a belt drive trans if they wanted to reduce weight take it from the car not the drivetrain I've grenaded a few cvt trans in the junkyard just messing around garbage transmission!!

I own a maxima, love it, one thing even I (maxima lover) wanna say, Get rid of the CVT PLZ
Man honestly it’s no so bad until you get up to about 75,000 miles in the car, it’s starts acting all types of ways
7 th gen. Mine has 130000 miles and I dog it still to this day. Acts a lil funny sometimes when the breaks are hit hard but she comes back every time. Never changed the fluid either bought it second hand bought at 20000. However I will say the cvt is a hard pill to swallow. And it sits in the back of you mind but what eves. Put 93 in the tank as recommended she runs really good. Put air suspension got even better. Who knows may convert to rear wheel in the future love the body style especially when she’s slammed to the ground!

I actually have a 2019 Maxima for a daily. I never beat on it, honestly I'm not sure if I've ever even stuffed it to the floor, but it's a super comfy car and gets pretty decent gas mileage. I just feel like with the FWD and the CVT it's not worth breaking when it's better suited as a luxurious cruiser anyway. Really enjoy the car, but I sure would love an R32 for a weekend cruiser.
Smart choice go easy on the transmission... CVT Jaco transmissions aren't very good.... and yes an R32 would be awesome

500hp 510 smokes a 900hp GTR through the twisties. Not like being on rails at all. Quite the opposite like driving hard in the rain except it's happening at warp speed...and it's dry. Gotta be fast on your feet and fast with U hands no room for error

Maxima had simulation shift turned on. Driver could have turned off simulated shift by using L for the win

I own a 2018 Maxima and there is no L option on this car. The only thing that could have made a difference is to put it into sport mode and make sure that there is premium fuel in the car.
Not "L", genius. You can't have the car in sport mode (must be in normal mode to avoid the fake shifts).
My 2012 is actually faster in regular Drive as opposed to sport mode. There is no "L""

Had a moded 02 altima SE with the 3.5L and it was already a pretty damn fast car when it came out but a few bolt ons really woke it up.

I swear i will love Nissan till the day i die !!!! They never stop impressing me and it's insane the amount of performance. Say what you will and people always do I've had smashed ones many with over 200k and many with CVT trans and never had a issue. They run great and are fast as hell !!!
