I met Spike Lee at this record store in NYC a couple of moons ago. Early 90s I believe. The store occupied the whole block, half for music and the other half for videos and was located on 60 something street, near a subway station. I think it was called TOWER RECORDS AND VIDEO. He was waiting on line to pay and I was like two bodies behind him and I recognized him and when I said hi he answered as if I was his next door neighbor. "YO MAN, WHAT'S UP". Chatted for a couple of minutes until it was his turn to pay and before leaving he shook my hand and said, "TAKE CARE, MAN". Btw. Spike and I were born in 1957 so we are the same age, 64 yrs old, although he's 4 months older than me. Really nice guy in my opinion.
I am extremely appreciative of this interview. I had just recently watched an interview conducted with Spike Lee, from 1992, before the debut of his then new movie, "Malcolm X" which created a uniquely beautiful experience of hearing Mr. Lee then and now, with similar viewpoints, also fully showing me how passionate he of course is of the film, and how much the film has left an indelible impact in his career, but surely his life as well. Hearing Mr. Lee speak in this interview reminded me time and time again why I have made the decision to view his entire catalog and why he is a director who is worth knowing about. His art and his purpose build a legacy that unfortunately will only truly be understood by some, once it's too late and his time is up. But being privy to him and his legacy, I am able to observe and learn from the craft of a LIVING legend. And I am truly grateful for that.
Cinema as a means to inspire and evaluate-assess social progress; a mirror of accountability present in culture is essential. I appreciate the lecture interview shared.

Spike Lee speaks the truth.
He is talking to people who are taught what to think, not how to think.
They won't understand you.
Big up Spike for doing this at BAFTA. I know it was mad uncomfortable there loool
I'm pretty sure Spike lee is comfortable everywhere because he knows where he is from...
The 2nd do the right thing. Excellent
Do the right thing, though Malcolm X is a masterpiece that was ignored by the academy.

Spike is a brilliant man, who’s that vacuous interviewer in the Camden Market coat?
1:27 recycled speech from "Do the Right Thing" doesn't get a lot of love
It's actually from the book of the same name. Spike did it first though.
Can someone please explain why investing in Malcolm X could not be a tax write off??
You know why.
