i see where a couple of readers were concerned about hip rotation as am i. the hips ,spinal column in the lower region of the back are designed to flex, not so much rotation. one must be careful not to rotate vigorously as it could result in possible injury to the vertebrae. however , rotation is a must in swimming and drills like the 6beat snap, 6-3-6 snap and what i call the "cuddle up" drill are good drills for emphasizing rotation and control. i work with adults and seniors primarily and find they rely on decades old techniques that need to be updated and i always refer them to swim vice as my go to reference.

The visual demo really makes the rotation issue clear. I will definitely work on this. Thank you for the great advice!

Hi CM, I have noticed that driving from my hips does generate power when timed with the stroke. All moving as one, like golf or baseball hips create power!! Thanks SWIMVICE🏊🏽‍♂️👏🏾

Thanks, coach Mandy for this great advice. I know why my arms are tiring quickly, and a bit of pain in my back; it’s all because of my wrong way of rotating. Have a great Day! 👍🏊

If the hips drive the rotation, then why do your shoulders rotate before your hips do? I noticed this a long time ago when doing my kicking laps. I do them using body rotation. It is easiest to see this if you are doing the 6/6 drill. Totally on your side, 6 kicks, then a quick snap roll to the other side, then 6 more kicks. The low side shoulder, which is the pulling arm, rotates first, then the hips follow. Don't believe me? Just try this.

No comments Mandy? I will continue to maintain that the hips are mechanically and physically incapable of rotating anything. At best, for any sport that uses rotational energy, they act as a universal joint that transfers energy from one end of the body to the other. I have no idea how this myth ever came to be. With any land based sport that uses rotation, the feet need to be anchored firmly on the ground like golf or throwing a martial arts punch. Or, with throwing, you step into the throw, and again energy goes from feet, through hips, and out the finger tips. In swimming, there is NOTHING to anchor your lower body on. You have neither leverage, which would require legs out very wide and creating huge amounts of drag, and you have nothing to anchor your feet onto. The hips are fused, and rotate as one unit. The shoulders rotate independently of each other. Without exception, with properly timed and linked kick and arm pull, if the right arm is going to pull, the right leg is up and cocked/spring loaded. The right arm starts the pull, and then the hips rotate, and the right leg kicks to the front side, and then the left arm completes the shoulder rotation when it enters the water. You do this. It is easy to see, even without slow motion, which the 2 beat kick freestyle is. If you have any other reason that can explain the low side shoulder rotating before the hips do, I would like to hear it. Give the 6/6 drill a try and feel what you are doing.
