The old town of Lüneburg attracts with many sights
Middle Ages meets modernity: Gothic churches and historic gabled houses characterize Lüneburg's old town. The still young Leuphana University attracts thousands of students to the ancient salt city.
White, precious and sought after all over the world: salt determined the fate of Lüneburg for more than 1,000 years. The salt flats made the city in the northeast of the Lüneburg Heath rich and famous. Lüneburg became one of the main commercial cities in the north and a member of the Hanseatic League . Today, around 74,000 residents live in the city of Ilmenau and around 11,000 students attend the university.
Unique brick monuments
The beautiful gabled brick houses testify to Lüneburg's former wealth. The medieval townscape with its narrow streets and two large squares - the market square and Am Sande square - was spared from war and disasters and has been almost completely preserved. The centerpiece is the magnificent Town Hall, the oldest parts of which date back to the 13th century. The baroque facade was completed in the 18th century.
