Protecting the Cacti & Succulents in the Greenhouse During the UK Heatwave |

  • It has been a very hot start to the week in the UK with temperatures exceeding 40c in some parts of the country. In this video, I'll be showing you how I protected my plants in the greenhouse from the intense summer sun. I also recorded a time lapse of the thermometer rising in the greenhouse during Monday and Tuesday, although this turned out not to be a good idea! Enjoy! :)

    reporting from northeast Ohio. My high in my plant room is 30C, low is 27.7C. Current outdoor temp is 31C. predicted high temps over the next ten days range from 27C to32C. Lows range from 19C to 22C. This has been a fairly mild summer for this area. Normal highs for this area at this time of year range from 32C to 35C. I live in a sixth-floor apartment in a high-rise built on high ground, so I get good air circulation in my plant room just by opening a window. I close it only when it is raining.
    One thing to watch closely in a heat wave is the nighttime lows. Cam plants cannot breathe during extreme heat because their stomata close to conserve moisture. This means that the plant converts all its CO2 to oxygen sometime during the early afternoon. With no CO2, Photosynthesis cannot occur. If temperatures drop significantly at night, the stomata open, oxygen escapes and the plant can absorb enough CO2 to perform photosynthesis again in the morning. But if the nighttime temperatures do not drop, the plant uses up its CO2 on the first day and cannot get more until the temperatures drop and the stomata open again. Watering is not necessary at this time because, with the stomata closed, no water is lost, and the plant cannot grow without the carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis.
    One piece of data I have not been able to find is at what temperature the stomata close and open. All the articles say they open at low temps and close at high temps, but none of them say how low and how high. My guess would be somewhere between 24 and 30C. If anyone has a more accurate number, I would like to hear it.

      Thank you for your detailed comment, Emmit. Definitely deserves a pin. I think with CAM it can be different between species. I did see a graph showing what time the stomata on an Opuntia opened but nothing on what the temperature was during that time. Would be nice to know exactly what the temperature ranges are for different plants, but I don’t think any detailed studies have been done on it with cacti and succulents, unless we’re just not looking hard enough lol. Thank you for watching and commenting 👍🏻🌵☀️🌼🌺🏜

    Welcome to my summer! 😉 But yours is different because your humidity is high. That makes it more uncomfortable for you and “feel factor” is also hotter. But you did great at protecting your plants in the greenhouse. Not so great at protecting your camera 📸 🤦🏻‍♀️😆Thank you so much for mentioning my channel. Ugh, I need a new banner. 🤣 I hope your weather is better now. Stay hydrated!

We have no aircon here either unfortunately. Haha I wont be putting the camera in there again that's for sure! Nothing wrong with your banner ☺ thank you for watching and commenting as always, Ana. WOW this is a really BRILLIANT video Daz :-D you have done an amazing job of protecting all your plants during the heatwave and the thermometer time lapse was absolutely AWESOME, this Summer has been crazy hot in Ireland but its been so much hotter for you in England than here, on Monday it reached 34c in our back yard although it was 27c in our front garden, the polytunnel reached 48c and we was so worried the cover would melt as the metal poles were red hot to touch, but I can only imagine how much hotter it would have reached in the polytunnel if we had had the temps you have had, argh haha, well done on protecting all of your beauties in the greenhouse and all your plants are looking AMAZING, thanks so much for sharing this awesome vid Daz, and Hans and I are sending you and beautiful Edith lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to England and Singapore for a super cool afternoon and evening ahead XXXXX

    Living near the equator, I am so used to very warm temperatures but I cannot remember ever experiencing that kind of heat, Sweetheart. Ghastly really! That shade netting is perfect. If your thermometer was placed without that netting, your reading would’ve probably reached 50c or more! 🥵😱 I am thankful that you are safe there and the temperature has improved a bit. Hopefully, you can sleep much better tonight. ❤️

    Omg! You're having my usual temperature 🥵🌡️! Here at Valencia, Spain we are experiencing the hottest summer ever. Right now we are over 30 Celsius most of the day, reaching 45 in my covered area, just a few hours in the middle of the night down to 25°C, tropical nights for a month and a half, over 20°C in June and over 30°C in July (high humidity of the Mediterranean coast makes it really uncomfortable). I had to give shade to my plants that are totally dormant now and I had a few cacti burnt under a shade of 40% protection🙈 ... some baby Echeverias got cooked (that happens to me but not so many as this year). And we are having a lot of fire in our forests here in Spain 😩... Crazy! So sorry for your camera 😳, I can't use my mobile outside without a shade, most of the day due to overheating. Good luck with your plants, hope they resist 🤞😘💞

I know what you mean about the tropical nights, it was absolutely unbearable on Tuesday night, couldn’t sleep at all. @@Cactimania Oh, so sorry to hear that you had fires also where you live🥺🙏. Yeah, sleeping with high temperature is a true nightmare🙈, we kind of solve that in Spain with our 'siesta' (sleeping twenty minutes or so after our lunch between two and three pm) but it's difficult to find that pause if you're working and we end up being really tired after a few weeks of hot nights 🙈. Thank you for always answering my comments. Lots of kisses to Edith and you 😘

    We had some very high temperatures this month too in Poland, I thiink it was 36 C? Suprisingly lower than you. I only felt some of it in the garden in the morning when we watered all the plants that needed it, and I promptly hid inside because it was terrible. Having a ground floor room is good for summer, hah... it's nice here and not hot at all. Bless the insulation, all the neighbours above me and the cold seeping in from the basements below. The tradeoff is I do have the coldest room in the winter too, but I think I prefer to dress up a bit in winter over melting.

    • @Cactimania
      @Cactimania  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I definitely prefer the cooler temps, it’s easier to warm up in the winter than it is to cool down in the summer that’s for sure! My fans are on the go in every room and I have 2 on the go in the front room where the temperature monitor is.
