- Bikepacking a historic route can be a fun and rewarding experience. If you’re looking for such a route try this Dutch ‘Zuiderwaterlinie’ route past castles, forts, brilliant waterworks and cobbled village centres. (links below)
For centuries the Dutch Zuiderwaterlinie (southern waterline) served to protect the country against Southern attacks. If the attackers came close, the waterworks would flood land to act as a natural barrier. Inundation, we call that these days.
The waterline runs all the way from the western town of Bergen op Zoom to the Eastern town of Grave. The Zuiderwaterlinie route we made and rode covers 348-kilometre (216 mile) and you’re invited you to enjoy it too.
Everywhere along the line, you find traces of an eventful past. The powder vapours in the fortified towns have disappeared by now, but the walls, ramparts and cannons are still there. Beautiful city monuments serve as reminders of times when soldiers still guarded the gates. You can still visit many of these monuments.
The route follows the Brabant bike junction network. Along the way, you can follow the star-shaped symbol that waymarks the Zuiderwaterlinie. Some parts, such as over the ramparts, lead along footpaths. Look at the route profile and get off and push here if necessary as you share the path with other road users.
Each of the Tours we offer in the Zuiderwaterlinie collection is around 100 to 120 kilometres (62 to 74 miles) long, but you could split the distances. The route is perfect for bikepacking. The region has plenty of places to stay overnight, you can find them on well-known booking platforms.

Hi Joeri! It’s roadbike proof for sure. We sonsider it to be an AllRoad route, but its definitely more a road route than a Gravel route. The thumbnail should actually be different :-p If you share your e-mail to info@fatpigeon.cc via instagram we gather a group of 96 (!!) people who gave their addresses to share this Zuiderwaterlinie ride as a bikepack, and 40 as and audax/ultra
Great video. But am I the only one who hears a hollow voice-over? Difficult to understand.

It’s far from ideal. We agree. We rode this adventure in 2021, scripted a story which a pro then recorded. But that was SO English that we decided that any personal voiceover would better suit than that deep English accent. Scuzi, better luck next time. Ever heard of the Zuiderwaterlinie?
