  • What is the school of the griffin? In this video I try my best to explain the history of the school of the griffin. I will go over prominent members and their history, the school of the griffins effect on the witcher games, George of Kagen, Jerome Moreau and many other school of the griffin witcher's! Be sure to like the video for more of the same and subscribe if you're new and love the witcher!

    A quick disclaimer - A lot of these videos use information from the witcher wiki, in some cases I do read directly from the pages, I do always make sure to include my own thoughts and other information I know myself, but I just want to make sure everyone is on the same page here. Even though I use information from the wiki, I do still create the videos, with time, effort and a lot of editing! The idea behind the lore videos is to present to information to you guys in a fun and more interesting way then you guys having to get the information from pages and read it yourself. If anyone isn't okay with this I apologise, but since day one I have always said where I get the information from. Thank you for reading.

      It's a breastplate form of armor (just like real armor). That curvature served to deflect arrows from penetrating and could also help to deflect blows from swords. If you look at him from the rear, the rear side of the armor is flat. The front is curved for the reasons I said, and well, you''re fighting is all wrong if you're taking blows from behind. ;)

    What I gathered from the lore is basically:
    Griffin School = Magic specialisation, somewhat knightly and heroic. Possibly linked to Toussaint.
    Cat School = Swordsmanship specialisation, ties to the elves.
    Wolf School = No specialisation, a sort of "jack of all trades" school.
    Viper School = A school focused on gathering monster lore, a sort of "knowledge is power" -sort of school.
    Bear School = Similar to wolf school, except they wear heavier armour and tend to not get along with each other.
    Manticore School = Alchemy specialisation, founded somewhere in Zerrikania or elsewhere in the east.

      Griffin school is also the only school that behave more like knightly order, being formed by first generation witchers from the time there is only single unified witcher school led by Alzur himself. Another point is that the entire school is geared toward preparation and intelligent planning, it is said in the new lorebook that the final test of Griffin school witcher is either taking the egg of griffin in stealth or reciting in full memory a magical book known as Liber Tenebraum. So this guy is pretty much green beret style super nerd.

    In the books the Witcher doesn’t tend to carry both swords at once and not all monsters are weak to silver. Like vampires. Vampires are not weak to silver. Regis talks about this in the books. He only needs his silver sword for specific monsters. Cursed beings for example: the striga. So a dragon could most definitely be killed by something other than silver. It’s mostly a game mechanic added to the witcher games. Otherwise we would rarely use the silver sword at all.

      Ryan Williamson a lot of the Relic "steel" swords in the Witcher 3 are made from Dimeritium. This could possibly be an alloy similar to Timascus (titanium that's been forged and folded multiple times to create layers, forming a superior metal). As it's implied in the game that Dimeritium is superior to steel, and much lighter (Just like titanium).

    In one of the books Geralt openly said that there is no such thing as a "witcher's code". There is a general consent about some things, but no one ever bothered to actually compile a code of conduct from that.
    He explained that it can make dealing with people sometimes easier, since a code is something that's respected. He can say that his code forbids him from doing something instead of saying that he doesn't want to do something.
    It's not something he makes up on the spot to behave however he wants to, though (although he admitted of sometimes hiding behind the code). He actually set some rules for himself and tries to stick to that. You might be better off calling it 'principles' instead of 'code'.
    Geralt said in the books that HE doesn't hunt dragons, but that doesn't really mean another witcher would be against it.

    The one big gripe I have with the Witcher games is how all monsters are vulnerable to silver swords. In the books not all monsters were weak to silver, some were weak to steel or specifically meteorite steel. Also, anyone else think it's odd that you use silver swords on the wild hunt? They're not really wraiths, they're elves and you don't use silver swords on normal elf enemies like scoatel.

    • @WitcherGeorge
      @WitcherGeorge  6 ปีที่แล้ว +100

      It is quiet strange, maybe silver swords have more of an affect against creatures that have experienced the conjunction of spheres? Unlikely, but I guess they had to make the game mechanics not to complicated so, they went for the simple one sword does one thing and the other does one thing haha.

      The elves of the wild hunt are magically imbued to be bigger and stronger in the witcher 3 game but why would silver swords do anything to them other than being sharpened pieces of metal.

      CDPR made an incredibly smart move changing a lot from the books, so it could better translate on game. If all the rules were followed from the books, the game would have crashed; much like it did with the more faithful, but still different, TW1.
      The books might be great, but as a 100% faithful game they wouldn't be anywhere near as good as CDPR's Witcher series.

    • @MisterVicePresident
      @MisterVicePresident 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I always questioned why Geralt uses a silver sword against the Wild Hunt and Gryphons, but I guess a lot of monsters like necrophages could have the argument made about them that their origins lie in magic, and if silver is anti-magic or something it might make sense. Gryphons are classified as hybrids so maybe their origins lie in magical breeding, and the wild hunt has arguably been enhanced by magic (otherwise they'd just be normal elves). Yet vampires don't really seem magical in that sense though, just from a different world.

    • @Spartacus114
      @Spartacus114 6 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      Serious answer: because in the game you fight the wild hunt elves along with their hounds, which would certainly be weaker to silver. So to keep you from having to constantly switch back and forth they just made wild hunt vulnerable to silver

  • @luke342w

    The Griffin witcher in Toussaint is also referred to as a surprisingly sociable, friendly guy. In my mind, I drew some parallels with the vampiers, in regards to how different witcher schools prefer to react in regards to socializing with "normal" people:
    - Griffin witchers are like Regis and, like him, break almost all stereotypes about them; they're fair, friendly, truthful and sociable
    - Bear witchers are like Orianna(just without her abuse of kids for blood); they are somewhat sociable and friendly, but they're secretive
    - Wolven witchers are like Dettlaff, when he is calm; generally hold more to themselves and are very direct, but also fair and truthful
    - Cat witchers are like the Unseen Elder(sans his immense power and abilities); they're extremely solitary, very aggressive and very quick
    - Manticore witchers are like the Novigrad vampire; very prone to internalized self-hatred and (as a result, maybe?) to religious nonesense(and religious extremism, I guess)

    You said that you didn't know where the Griffin witcher school was located but wandering around in the game I came across a castle in the far south of Velen near the Crossroads. It has a marker called The Last Bastion. The majority of the castle is buried underground but to me it resembles Kaer Morhen. Seems to me to make sense to have a witcher school in the north (Kaer Morhen), and one in to the west in Velen (Last Bastion). Then maybe the cat was in the South near Toussaint? I haven't read the books yet so could be just a castle that suffered in a war in one of the books but I like to think it's a witcher school.

    The Griffin school gear will always be my favorite simply because I use Signs all the time...Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but I'm pretty sure that Witcher George is loosely based on the legend of St. George and the Dragon, who was often depicted in medieval and Renaissance art: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_George_and_the_Dragon

    I love this quote so much.
    A hero is a random guy who runs into a burning building and saves the screaming kid.
    Professionals are the firemen who extinguish the fire, save everyone and minimise property damage.
    Professionals > heroes.

    In regards to Witcher's not hunting dragons, an interesting thought. The image of Witcher George fighting a dragon, the image looks more like a basilisk than a genuine dragon. Basilisks referred to as lesser dragons, not "proper dragons". Perhaps the story is referring to Witcher George fighting a Draconid, which a Basilisk is a member of, and that basilisks are usually green.

    Hi George, do you know that there is new lore on witchers, particulary the favorite witcher school of Griffin. Just check the A witcher's Journal PNP rpg supplement. There is even good information regarding the period known as Golden Age of Witcher, it is basically the 2nd generation of witcher when the unified order of witcher collapse. The era is also coincidence with the incident between Lara Dorren (ciri ancestress) and the human mage that led to the elven-human conflict. What a fascinating game it would be if it set in this era!

    Ik everybody has said this but
    A cool idea for a Witcher rpg/mmo is a game where all the Witcher schools are in their prime(either in the future or past) and you can create your character and decide what school they’re in and there can be a reward system where you can ask about your reward and maybe grow the Witcher school and there can be mechanics coming from that that can affect the ending

    The lighthouse plot is from a classic novel titled 'Jamaica Inn'.
    The bit about silver; Silver has been long known to be a metal that cleanses evil probably in part because of it's actual anti-biotic and anti-fungal properties. People who do not have a good understanding of what disease is or alloy allergies will come up with a 'just so' story to explain why something works. In Myth and Folklore, silver has long been associated with wounding creatures of ill intent and/or tainted by evil. The Wild Hunt has a reputation for being 'unseelie' (unholy). 'Seelie' elves may not have been willing to indulge in certain practices that their 'unseelie' counterparts would (like wanting to hold Ciri hostage for the remainder of her days after lying to her that they would release her after she had become pregnant by one of their number) , which could explain the Wild Hunt's vulnerability to silver over other elves. The Wild Hunt in mythology is oftentimes led by Oberon, King of the 'unseelie' court, and they hunt humans for sport.

    • @WitcherGeorge
      @WitcherGeorge  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah good point about the anti-fungal properties, I actually own a pair of socks that use silver as a way to prevent athletes foot etc. But I think that putting if you put too much thought into it, it doesn't really make a lot of sense, I think the best thing to do, is just accept that silver works in the way it does, because the plot requires it to.
