  • Your first steps will always be the most ungraceful. Doesn't matter. If you stick to it, you'll learn how to walk. This video showcases the mistakes I made and the leanings I take from them.

    The beginning is never easy and everyone has their own pace and challenges. What were your struggles so far? What were our biggest learnings? What are your tips for beginner?

      My struggle is I use scratch to make my "games" 💀

    • @LioGoesIndie
      @LioGoesIndie  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No, that is absolutely fine! I have made my first drag and drop experiences with scratch too and I must say, it is something that I would encourage every beginner to do!
      It really helps a lot for basic understandings of the game structure and takes away the complexity to have to learn a game engine on top of that.
      Once you think you are ready, you can still start learning a game engine and begin your first more serious project with it 🙂

    I made a game very similar to this in Java for a CS class a week ago. I didn't have an engine, but I can certainly relate to the code spaghetti problem. I sort of ended up throwing encapsulation out the window and not really making things expandable, but I certainly learned what not to do. In fact your whole experience with making your first game is incredibly similar to mine lol. To anyone planning to make their first game: don't just jump right in. It will lead to your code being incredibly messy and bad. You need to have a plan, not just of the game's features, but of how you will implement them.

      Hahaha, so relatable. Glad I'm not the only one here! I think everyone does this mistake at the beginning and the good thing is, we instantly learn how bad this affects the process and try to be less messy the next time.
      This seems to be something you can't grasp until you brought yourself to the brink of madness and understand how any project of big scope will be impossible, unless you dedicate some time in proper code architecture. 😂

    Now time for you to make Dangerous Woods Survivors!

      Hahaha, funny that you say this since I am actually working on creating a survivor clone in my spare time😂. It just didn't cross my mind to use dangerous woods as a basis for it 🤔 that game is actually pretty close to a survivor game, I agree.

    The first thing that can easily make your game more fun could be some visual effets when an ennemy is slain and just little animations here and there ! If you lack game ideas or inspiration i suggest binge watching game jams as they have a lot of original games ! If you want some help with game visual design and general graphics i'd be happy to help :)

      You are right, I really need those visual effects. I have recently been trying to do some animations and it's still terrible, but I'm getting there, haha :D
      Thank you so much for the fantastic offer! I think I'll shift my focus more towards quick iterations of small games in the near future and improve myself first by geting good at prototyping and more used to the whole process. I have the fear right now your kind efforts would be totally wasted on me with my current skills 😅
      The game showcased is currently the most I am capable of doing as long as I don't get a grip of encapsulations and terminating dependencies, which will need some practice.
      But truly awestruck and thankful for your kindness 💙

    You can try add some variety textures on a ground and small animation for grass... For a better environment. Now I'm also trying to make a small game on this engine... But it's very slow, because it's hard for me to concentrate on one thing and my thoughts fly in different directions :D

      Yeah I absolutely agree!
      I believe the flooring is nothing but a ColorRect in Godot if I remember right, so just a colored plain. Trying to spice this up with these repetitive patches of grass was definitely not the way to do it 😂
      Maybe if it would move and feel a bit more alive as you say, it would have somewhat passed

      @@LioGoesIndie The main thing is that the basis of the game is already there, now you can play around with the visuals 😄

    • @LioGoesIndie

      Yeah true, I've had it in my mind to make a polishing exercise out of it for some time. But this game is not worth the time to polish now. With the time and effort I'd have to spend to clean up the code base to make it expandable, I think I'd rather start from scratch and make something new with all the takeaways that I got from this experience 🙂

    I've used paint net too lol, time for me to try aseprite then

    • @LioGoesIndie
      @LioGoesIndie  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There are other options too, I think Krita was the other one called but I haven't checked it out yet. They are 2 very high regarded tools, but Asesprite is heavily focussed on pixel art and Krita I think is more of an all-rounder.
      Asesprite comes for 16-ish € whereas Krita is open source and costs nothing, if my memory doesn't fail me.
