Fly Fishing Penns Creek, "DOESN'T GET MUCH BETTER, WOW!!", April 2019

  • My two day trip on Penns was just full of, "Oh My Gosh!", "Wow!", "Big!", "Fat!", "Strong!", statements pouring out my mouth about the great trout in that creek. But also, there were a lot of "GRrrr!!", "Augh!", "Are you kidding me!?", statements about many big fish lost. Bugs were in the air but very little surface activity. Fish were staging in, just like the Little J, in super fast to moderately fast water, which made for some awesome battles! Flyfishing in PA is just about in full swing. Get your snacks and drinks ready, this is the uncut movie version. "Buckle up boys, it's gonna be a bumpy ride!" If it's too long for you at one sitting, maybe watch day 1 then day 2. scott. used the shorty furled leader and really like it. caught some using dries and easy transition just to remove the nymping rig and add some 5x tippet and start slinging. was at penns this past week and really did not do well nymping but able to catch 4 on top around 6:30. Penns has the ability to make you humble. thanks again for the help

      Great to hear Josh! Just think how much easier it will be in a couple more months with that setup, you’ll be prepared for whatever the stream throws at you. Thanks for the feedback.

      Hi Josh! Oh yeah, gotta feed the fishies, ha! Honestly Josh, I’m constantly changing my weight all day long, every area has a different flow and depth, sometimes I can get away with not changing my weight as long as the creek is somewhat uniform, but Penns Creek’s bottom is so unique with many changes throughout that you gotta makes changes accordingly. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

    Hello...new to the channel. I'm going to be fishing Penn's the first time the last weekend in April. I consider myself a fly fishing rookie...could you recommend a few nymphs / dry flies / rigs that should be used? Nice video!

    • @pawoodsnwater7551
      @pawoodsnwater7551  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi James! Nice to have you on board, thanks! Well, that’s a great time of year. Either go to your local fly fishing pro shop or call a shop and order: nymphs and dry flies for Hendricksons, Grannom Caddis, also soft hackles for them also, Globugs on size 16 pale yellow color and/or fl. orange , brown and golden stonefly nymphs, size 12-3xl, and Frenchies and my Walt’s worm tyed peeking caddis style. Those suggested patterns should give you some action that time of year. Oh, and also BWO patterns dry, soft hackles and nymphs too. Sounds like a lot and it is a lot, maybe 3-4 of each pattern, but you wanna go prepared. You can use most of those patterns other times of the year also. You can call Holsingers Fly Shop in East Freedom, PA and they’ll tye all of whatever you want if you don’t have a shop around you. They actually tye up my Scott’s Big Brown or Ginger Nymph patterns in size 12-3xl, they’ll have everything. Good luck and have a blast. Penns is an awesome stream all throughout. Check out my video Nymphing a Snowy Penns Creek, the first ten minutes I go into detail my leader setup. Also check out my video Nymphing Strategies Part 3 for my technique. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

    Scott i am using the harvey leader and making adjustment between nymphing and dries. i want to try using the furled leader. i went to cuthroat leaders and there is a few options. Do you use the 50' river with floating line leader with a tippet ring or is there another option you use

    • @pawoodsnwater7551
      @pawoodsnwater7551  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Josh! I’m using the 50” Cutthroat Furled Shorty Dry Fly leader with a tippet ring, now that just makes up my butt section. Coming off that for medium to big streams with bigger fish, I have 5ft of 4x Flouro, then my tandem rig for nymphing. For dries, instead of the tandem rig I’ll add another 3ft of 5x or 6x then my dry fly. For medium to small size streams with average to smaller trout, coming off the furled leader I’ll add just 4ft of 5x Flouro, then the tandem rig or the extra tippet for the dry. Hope that helps. Good luck 👍🏻.

      Jonathon Kersting Hi Jonathan! Thank you so much As far as Pine Creek, any of the public access spots from Cedar Run downstream to about 2 miles below Slate Run is all good water. And honestly, for Penns Creek the entire stream from Coburn all the way down to Glen Iron is also all good water. Have fun, great time of year but check water levels before you go in case of heavy rains before you leave. Good luck!

    Man I was sure I made a comment on this video. I have got to say, they were some really nice browns bar none. Of course those usual fish that get off always have to be the hogs. So how did this Echo rod work for you, it seemed to be really doing a good job. I just got a Orvis Clearwater 10" 4wt. that I got as a back up rod, what I have to say is, that is exactly what it will be, back up....Way Back...Not impressed with it. Jack B. Honestly, just watch my videos and pick up on what I’m doing and using, when nymphing go deeper than you think, if they’re fish rising and you not real good with dry fly fishing then swing your nymphs or soft hackles in front of their feeding lanes. Tight Lines!
