A Tough Cold Winter Day on Penns Creek (With my good friend Dave Rothrock)
Not a bad day, but definitely not an easy day. Wintertime fly fishing is always a challenge, but when your weather app is incorrect, and the fish are being picky, relaxing at home with a nice hot mug of cocoa watching TH-cam fly fishing videos, seems a lot more inviting then being on the water. But as we struggled with the elements, we were blessed with some nice fishies to the net. Dave always teaches me a thing or two every time I'm on stream with him. I hope you also pick up some pointers in this video.

The PERFECT Winter Fly Fishing Day! PA Class "A" Water, Snow, No Wind, Hungry Fish, "Yeah Baby!"
มุมมอง 6Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Christmas came a couple days early for me. Thank you, Jesus! Thought I'd try to squeeze in one more fishing trip before Christmas. Well, turned out to be the perfect day. Tons of hungry cooperative fish, no wind, a pretty snowfall, and the stream all to myself. I used the same nymphing tandem rig all day, the Globug, the Big Ginger Nymph, and a Micro-San Juan Worm.

Merry Christmas everyone! My present to you this year is showing in detail my Upper Delaware River nymphing tandem rig that I use in most of my West Branch, East Branch and Main Stem fly fishing videos, and explain how I fish it. I hope you all have a joyous Christmas and a safe New Year's.
Fly Fishing Late Fall on the Upper Delaware, "ALL AROUND HANCOCK, NY"

Finally, getting back out on the water, my adventures took me up to the Delaware River, around Hancock, NY. Great weather, no wind, easy wading, and the fish were on the feed! Landed a bunch of fish, but I also had issues with a ton of get-offs and foul hookups, but when the fish are feeding as good as they were, slamming the flies underneath, you'll have that.

A Limestoner Plus Some Significant Rain = Good Summertime Fly-Fishing

Well, we got it again guys, a couple good heavy rain events, bumped up the water table. Now our local limestoners have some decent water temps and flows, and with bugs hatching, it's producing fun on the streams for us fly fishermen. Get it while we can, because you never know, it could be short lived. Tricos and terrestrials were on the menu today.

great video penns creek browns are the best.
Hi Sam! Yessir, Penns Creek brownies and the stream and scenery are just awesome! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Really enjoying your videos! You've convinced me to try a 10' 4 weight for your style of fishing this year. Can you recommend any mid priced rods in this configuration? Thanks
Hello Ed and thank you very much! Ok, well, the 10ft/4wts I’m referring to are not nymph action rods but rather a fast action rod. And mid price is relative to the the buyer, so since high end rods are $850-1k, mid price is probably around $400-600. I’m not too familiar with ALL rod manufacturers but some good reputable ones are Diamondback, or Orvis Recon or Temple Fork Outfitters or Scott or Sage. I’m sure there are many others, but you’ll have to do that research, just make sure it’s an all around fast action rod, Nymphing action rods are not good for dry fly fishing. One relatively inexpensive rod I casted at the NJ Fly Fishing show was the Moonlit Umbra in a 10/5, it casted beautifully and only $170 from Precision Fly Shop. Now I don’t know if they make a 10/4, but if they do, I’d seriously consider that one. Hope this helps. Good luck and happy shopping 👍🏻.
Scott, you didn't do too bad for the conditions! Keep em coming Buddy!
Thank you Dave! Yes, considering. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
I Don't fish for genetically engineered/modified fish like trout in Pennsylvania anymore...All of my friends that ate stocked fish are literally deceased due to cancer...It's when I stopped taking the time to catch those pets.
Well, this section of Penns is not stocked, not to say some stocked fish don’t migrate in and out of this middle section. But sad to hear you can’t find any enjoyment in stocked fish, it’s probably very very rare that a fly fisherman will keep a fish to actually eat it, but there’s still plenty there to challenge the fisherman plus enjoy the excitement of the fight and the catch, no harm to you medically to just practice good catch and release. Many guys just don’t have access to wild trout, so most times you just gotta try to enjoy what you have available to you. The sport and challenge of fly fishing and learning about the bugs and fly tying is what most guys focus on rather than the fish’s tablefare. I truly hope this is something you can appreciate more in the future. Tight Lines!
Appreciate the little wintertime Penn's fix, Scott. Good to see Dave getting at it!
Cory! Brother! Very sorry I missed you up at the NJ show. It’s funny how I wasn’t even going to post this video, go figure, I’m still learning, thankfully it’s not my source of income, ha! Hope you’re doing well. Looking forward to your upcoming videos 👍🏻.
Hello Scott, I am a senior in high school and have been watching your videos for a few years now. I began a fly fishing club a few years ago at my school and I am always looking for guest speakers. I love the way you teach fly fishing, and think it would be great if you would be willing to talk to our club sometime. Let me know what you think!
Hello Jude! It would be an honored to speak to your school club. With that said, depending on where you’re located, date and time, need to be discussed. My email is scottmxdad@yahoo.com, please reach out. Thank you!

Hi Scott, Thanks for the long awaited video. Excellent job as always. But what’s this about less videos in 2025?? Is it maybe time for you to expand your geography? Arizona’s White Mtns hold a unique trout call the Apache Trout -olive green back, lemon yellow belly, peach white-tipped fins and rose cheeks. The Apache Tribe manages Christmas Tree Lake as a trophy Apache Trout fishery. Their May “Fish Camp” draws fly anglers from all over the U.S. New Mexico features the native Gila Trout and the state’s San Juan river is a prolific rainbow & brown trout fishery. The Lahonton Cutthroat Trout of Pyramid Lake Nevada are the largest Cutthroat Trout in the world and amazingly colorful. How about fishing the streams of California’s Golden Trout Wilderness for arguably the most beautiful trout anywhere? If you feel like you’ve done a lot of fishing closer to home, maybe it’s time to spread out a little. Whatever it takes, I would certainly like to see more of your videos this year, not less. Thanks
Well well Frank, when you put it that way, guess I gotta lot more work to get done. I better get busy! But seriously, hopefully some of your suggestions I should consider. Stay tune, you never know! Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Scott, glad you posted the video. Sounds like several others feel the same way. Thanks for the camaraderie on the stream!

Scott, thanks again for posting your experiences on the water, always insightful! I still think you did well even if it was a slow day! I still plan on making it back to PA to fish those waters back home! I have a brother that still lives there. I told the wife I've got to get back there and fish some of the streams i fished as a kid. I just have to do some research about regulations of the fisheries there!
Hi Jerome! I did not know you not in PA anymore. I sincerely hope you can get back here to fish some of your favorite streams. Happy the videos help you reminisce. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Nice video again, Scott! The spot with a tree at the inflow is one of my favorite spots on penns. Usually I catch fish on the far side of main current but in summer, there’s a lot of fish in the deepest area which is near side of the main current.
Thank you brother! A super deep hole with great flow and biomass distribution, but also with tough conflicting currents to get good drifts through, great holding water. I’m sure it’s a honey hole year round. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
I like when you video the banks and the hills so I can tell where you are. It lets me put myself on that piece of water with you in my head and how I'd try to fish it.
Hello Joanne! Thank you so much for noticing that. Sometimes I struggle trying to get the best angle for my camera. Usually where I gain angling it one way, I lose the other way. Happy I got it right this time👍🏻. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

Thank you for posting your awesome video. We look forward to them. What is your leader setup? What kind of line are you using?
@ Hi Mirna! Really, I’ve kept my leader setup pretty much the same over the past ten years. I use a standard weight forward floating line matched to the rod, then I use the 50” Cutthroat Furled Shorty leader for my butt section, then 5ft of 4x or 5x Flouro , depending on the creek and fish size, then my tandem rig, if I’m dry fly fishing I add another 3ft of 5x or 6x Flouro then my dry fly. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@pawoodsnwater7551 thank you Scott. Which brand of fluorocarbon tippet is your favorite? Do you ever use a sighter on your leader?
@@mirnadavis3513 For 3x-5x tippet I use Seaguar Red Label in 4-8lb test. For 6x-8x I like Cortland Premium Flouro. No I don’t use sighter material in my leader, you can, nothing wrong using it, I just don’t find it necessary.

Hey Scott, great video ! Do you have a link to the replacement net bag for your Orvis net ? I just got a great price on the net, and am pretty sure I would like to replace the bag as you did. Thank you much for a reply, Larry
Hi Larry and thank you very much! Here’s the link to the Amazon account I bought the net from: Dovesun Fishing Net Replacement, color: Black, size: 12.6” diam., 11.8” depth, 39.3” circumference. I used the same thread from the old net , so be careful taking it off, and I did have to add about 3 more inches of a similar thread to finish it up. To start, I put the new net around the frame with twisty ties, then start restitching the new net down at one side of the handle, go around the frame and finish on the other side of the handle. Hope this helps, good luck 👍🏻.
Scott,Great looking flies. Where do you get Ginger Raccoon, Cream Antron what location or mail order??? Please keep up the great videos for us that are too old to get out anymore.
Hi Glen! The cream Antron in a bag is available at most fly shops, not a hard one to get, but the ginger raccoon I’ve seriously had for at least 35 years, but any natural cream dubbing will do, like hares ear or possum or SLF. J Stockard and Feather Craft have a pretty wide selection, as does Avid Max thru Amazon, check those three first. Hope this helps 👍🏻.
Hey Scott, great video ! Do you have a link to the replacement net bag for your Orvis net ? I just got a great price on the net, and am pretty sure I would like to replace the bag as you did. Thank you much for a reply, Larry
Hello Larry! Thank you very much! I got the replacement net off Amazon, this should be the link for the net , size and color I purchased, m.media-amazon.com/images/S/sash//cxfxW9mXeoKT4Ys.svg If the link doesn’t work, I purchased it from Amazon, the company was Dovesun Rubber Fish net replacement, black color, size: 12.6” diam. , 11.8” depth, 39.3” circumference, price $12.99 Hope this helps, I used the same thread that I unstitched from the old net, so be careful taking it off not to ruin that thread, I did also have to add about 3” of a similar thread to the end because I guess I didn’t stitch it or tye it into the frame the same exact way as I took it off. Also, I started by putting the net on around the frame with twisty ties, then started the thread at one side near the handle and kept stitching it around the frame back down to the other side of the handle, then took the twisty ties off after it was finished. Good luck 👍🏻.
Nice fishing Scott especially for this time of the year! All the best to you in 2025!
Lively Legz!! Hey guys! Using your Legz on Scott’s Big Ginger Nymph, love them! Thanks for watching and commenting.
That 17" brown in the beginning of the video appears to be a wild brown....not a stocked brown. Generally the stocked browns have a silver hue on there upper body and don't have the brightly colored belly like the wild browns do. Beautiful fish nonetheless!
Hi buddy! Yes, I believe so, that stream has a great population of wild brownies, and big ones too! Appreciate you watching and commenting.

Hi Scott I'm Tommy from somerset county. From your fly line what do you use to your rig? Also I fish the J alot, what three flies do you suggest I can use? Thank's.....Tommy
Hi Tommy! From my fly line I use the 50” Cutthroat Furled Shorty Leader for my butt section then 5ft of 4x Flouro, then my tandem rig. Check out my video from the summer of ‘23 called My Leader Setup, I go into detail going from nymphing to dries with my leader. For the J, I do have a lot of success with this rig, also an olive perdigon , blue perdigon, soft hackles in season and midge pupae in the winter and little black Stonefly patterns, nymphs and dries. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the fly patterns. Attended the ESCTU talk you gave recently. Will need to tie some of these before heading up to WBA this spring.
In addition, what lenght leader are you using in the video? And the tippet is appropriate 5 ft?
Hello Tommy! Thank you very much, and yep, tye a few up for the Delaware and give them a fair shot. As far as my leader, first I only use a standard weight forward floating line matched to the rod, then I use the 50” Cutthroat Furled Shorty leader just as my butt section, then I run 5ft of 4x Flouro, then the tandem rig. Hope this helps. If you’d like, check out my video from the summer of ‘23 called, My Leader Setup, in there, I go into a very detailed explanation of my leader, going from nymphing then going over to dries. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
@ I’ve got the Cuttthroat leader already so I’m excited to give this a shot. Definitely want to get this setup before the West Branch trip.
Great video again. Is that a fl cheese eggstacy glo bug or orange? You used to use white or cream. No? You didn't get skunked on this day. lol Love the snowy day. Keep um coming!!!
Hi George! This video I started out with the Fl. Sunburst Orange color, then after that one fell apart, I switched over to the Fl. Cheese color. I think , this day, the orange worked better. Thanks again.
Where can i buy these winter time midges?Dave
Hi Dave! Most fly shops sell common midge patterns and some may sell some of their local patterns. I tye my own, but a google search for midge pupas for sale or top secret midge pattern Check these websites or call the shops for specifics, TCO, Tactical Fly Fishing, Feather Craft Fly Fishing, Precision Fly Shop, also a lot of Western fly shops carry good local patterns. Hope this helps.

Hi Seth! Doug, a lot of the “predictable” hatches are up closer to Deposit, from like Dream Catchers on upstream, especially in the summer, you can almost set your watch to them, Sulphurs, BWOs, and caddis are mostly in the evenings but some during the day, other hatches are common just not predictable. From Hale Eddy downstream the hatches are there just not predictable because the water is less stable from there down, the first couple miles below the reservoir the water is very stable. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Is that a Regal Medalist vise? Great vise. I have one. So, you tie the ginger nymph on a size 12 4XL and the the Isonychia on a size 12 3 XL. I tye both bugs . I like how you wrap the eggstacy around the hook. Holds up better that way. Never heard of building a dam behind the bead. lol Great video and tyes. Keep um coming.
Hi George! Yes, love my Regal vise with the midge jaws. Yes the size 12-4XL hook gor the Big Ginger or Brown nymph with the bigger Med size Lively Legz and the size 12-3xl hook TMC200R hook with the small size Lively Legz. The Iso nymph is considerably smaller than a stonefly nymph. Glad you’re finding success with them. 👍🏻. Thanks for watching and commenting.
