Great video! I had P0302 error code indicating misfire in #2 cylinder. I swapped the ignition coil pack with the #3 cylinder and now the code switched to #3 cylinder. Ignition coil pack was the problem. New Duralast C1638 from Autozone (opened till 9 PM!) and I was back in business!!!!!
Cant thank you enough . You helped me diagnosed my dauther’s car. I fixed the problem with autozone Duralast life warrantee coil. $49.49 Mini Cooper 2009 S. God bless
Thank you I mean it I was about to buy a complete cylinder head 700 bucks you sir Are awesome this is what youtube channels Are all about I am pumped to fix this tomorrow
THANK YOU!! You broke this down simply for me. Saved me hundreds of dollars. I had P0300, P0303, and P0304 on mine. Ended up replacing the coils in cylinders 3 and 4 to solve the problem. Was an immediate change in how the car run and the codes didn't come back after clearing. Now to clear that pesky CEL!
late reply, but hopefully help the next guy on mini coopers...Get a socket wrench head that will fit super tight in the ignition coil plug (With the pins, just be careful), then you will want to get a large wrench and flip it upside down and place the tip under the rubber tab and plastic that is supported by the socket wrench head. Just pry it up with the roundness of the large wrench upwards and then you will eventually be able to pop it out. The only way I was able to do it without damaging them, or breaking the plastics.
Hey Paul , I recently replaced the thermostat housing as well and had to disconnect all coil wires and now I’m having a misfire in cylinder 1 now. I replaced the coil but even switched coils to different cylinders but cylinder 1 still isn’t functioning properly.. what should I do ?
You need to troubleshoot cylinder 1. Spark test, injector test, compression test. It has to be missing one. But this isn't something I can give you step by steps on, although I have compression test videos and there are videos on each of these all over TH-cam. Get results and I can provide some guidance.
oh man I almost pull out the electric cable of coils while running the engine I saw an advice on the cover " Be careful high voltage" I said ok I'll look again at that video I wasn't sure what you did thank god I didn't pull out the cable :) It might be dangerous
My all four ignition coils work, but cylinder 3 is still misfiring. What are the possible causes? Could it be the wire attaching to the coil? Please help!
You could pull the coil and lay it on the valve cover with it connected to see if it sparks. If it doesn't spark yes it could be the wiring from the ECU. If it does spark, the misfire could be caused by a problem with that cylinder injector or with loss of compression in that cylinder.
You can disconnect it true, but it will likely set codes for primary coil circuit open. And if you are going to swap, you will need it to be unbolted and the connector removed so either way. Personally I find it easier to pull the coil and l can also hear the secondary spark occurring down in the tube if the could is in fact firing. Personal preference.
I have these codes, just changed all the coils and my problem is that when I start it from a cold start it dies or struggles to idle but after you get it going it wont do it again
@@salt106035 I replaced the hpfp and still have the issue though it helped for a day. Now when I do this ignition coil trick it stalls on all four coils. Does that mean they’re fine I’m assuming?
Paul Kelley nope don’t recall. definitely gonna try this next time. i usually switch the ignition coils and rescan but i end up with a stored code and a new one so it can get confusing sometimes.
@@ivannava1352 I get ya. This way is only good when it is misfiring at that moment. Or sometimes if you get a coil circuit code. If the misfire is intermittent not so helpful
More than likely will damage get catalytic converter due to raw fuel being pumped into the exhaust. Some cars shut the injector off but not sure about this one
Because it is misfiring. Which isn't necessarily caused by coils, or even lack of spark. It could be a fuel or compression problem. Commonly people try to save money by swapping parts, then when it doesn't fix it, they drop it off at a shop to be diagnosed, some of those people are upset about a diagnosis charge, but they don't seem to mind blowing money on unneeded parts. Your vehicle really needs to be properly diagnosed, and that is going to take time by an highy knowledgeable technician... who is probably going to want to be paid for his/her time. The coil swap cylinder to cylinder is easy DIY, outside of that I don't recommend it being DIY.

Great video....thanks! I just diagnosed a bad ignition coil on my Mini's #4 cylinder in less than 5 minutes.

Glad it helped. Bet you see a huge bump in HP and MPG as well for such a simple fix.
Great Video. mine just threw a P0303 Cyl 3 misfire. Time for a new coil
Very nice job man clean and simple.
Childproof :)
Thank you so much for the video! Very useful. I am wondering what the best way is to take out the stubborn ignition coil. Thank you!

@@paulkelley86 I really appreciate your response. Been dealing with this all day today and your video helped a lot
My 07 Mini is showing the same codes but it also has P0012. I was thinking it might be a the Vanos solenoid. Any input would be greatly appreciated..
Nice one mate.
This same issue happened to me on number 3! Coincidentally after I replaced my thermostat housing as well.. wonder if that’s a related issue..
Same here. 😂

I’m having trouble pulling out the ignition coils
So I swapped the coils I can feel it stop misfiring because there is no more judder when I hit the gas but, the check engine light doesn’t get cleared
Right, you are seeing if the code moves following the coils. You need a scanner to check dtc

Why pull the whole coil. Just pull the harness from each coil.

Why pull the coil instead of unplugging it? does it matter? having similar issues
Unplugging is just as good, but will set additional codes which is also no problem, just clear them.
Good work
Weird for 1 coil to be bad but get a code for 3 cylinders all at once
I have these codes, just changed all the coils and my problem is that when I start it from a cold start it dies or struggles to idle but after you get it going it wont do it again

how bad does the shock hurt? i’ve had to diagnose bad coils but this seems to be a way faster method of doing it
You did not get shocked that day with the coil amd spark plug simulator demo in the classroom?
Not that bad. Kinda like a bee sting but no after pain

If the misfire is intermittent not so helpful
It is very unpleasant. Hight voltage 10x worse than household current. 😖
Brilliant!
How bad is it to drive while it’s like this ?

Thoughts on when it stalls on all four coils even after replacing with a new hpfp?
Hi
Hi mine came up after using seafoam last night
