On the aircraft I work on, at the main seal on the propeller shaft, the same problem exists. What our manual says baffled me the first time but it works.
We heat up the seal in hot oil and then gently work it over the flange, installing the spring afterwards.
The seal goes back into it's original shape and seals the shaft.
Maybe something for a rainy day.
Thanks again for the great video Mike.

This is great Mike, last time you built a series engine we never heard it run but I've a feeling we will hear this one

So that's where voltswagon got the idea, then arsed it up! (chain tensioner)

Engine is looking good Mike. Those crank seals had been crank seals too long! Will be good to see it in the S1 and hear it running.

I'm looking forward to this new series. What was up with the scrolling credits at the end of the video? They seem to have frozen up.

What is your opinion of the 2.5 L diesel engine? Considering a 1990 low mileage MOD 110. Concerned about highway cruising speed. Thank you.

Not one of the best engines - the military were limited to 50 mph so was OK for them, but watch out for MoD 110 as some were FFR (fitted for radio) and were lower geared to compensate for the extra battery weight they had to carry - these were generally low miles engines, but were usually driven to a hilltop and the engine was run flat out to charge the batteries

Time consuming but not hard to do once you understand how it works, quite smart really. The camshaft sprocket keyways allows you to get really quite close, slightly advanced is probably better option than slightly retarded to allow for some inevitable stretch and bedding in of timing chain over time.

There's another Series 1 LR IoE engine rebuild happening on the Barum Engines channel.. a bit sporadic, and buried by whingeing but still interesting.

If only I could find a better tool for removing crankcase seals etc. Something wider and flatter than a screwdriver.. hmm , I wonder if anyone sells them........😂
