This is a very useful, If you are a developer, also If you are a person who didn't know how does google crawlin works, why people say things like "oh this video is old" or "I was expecting a interactive board" please be grateful with the person who give us part of his knowledge.
Out of all the crap in my inbox today this was 7 minutes and 45 seconds of my time well spent. If only it were longer - I could listen to Matt Cutts for hourssssssss. Blush:)
I think that you somehow managed to simplify the crawling process of Google's search index. I had no idea it had come so far since the last time I sat in one of these lectures several years ago.
this guy deserve my respect i use google marketing for a long time and im always watch videos with explanations about ranking webisite and backlinks and all that... but this 7;44min that he made it its so much clear and its a very nice example how you can do your marketing! congrats!!
So is this page rank thing the reason when i type in a specific question into google I get results to "popular" websites instead of absolute relevance to the specific question i asked? Google is really going downhill. Do not rank my pages. That's my job
Still Google is showing some irrevelant results regarding language results. When we search for a particular search results in particular language, Google is showing mainly English articles. Example: crush meaning in Tamil Here Google is showing English content, but the user intent(100%) is to get (result of) meaning of English word crush in Tamil language.
That was really good. It was important for me to watch the board to comprehend (had to really watch) but you gave a really understandable breakdown for this question, Thank You.
Notes: ------------- 1. Crawling - crawl the web comprehensively and deeply. 2. Indexing - index those pages. 3. Ranking - rank or serve those pages and return the most relevant ones first
Hi Matt could you please explain how google manage the google maps business listing I have my business listed very low and if I click on the ranked filter my business jumps to the top.
??? That is a joke isn't it? Matt answered my question in that video here. I'm a webdeveloper for years and can really imagine how tricky such indexing and querying process can be, especially on such a huge database and infrastructure. Not much about the details is documented, except - as Matt points out in his video in scientific papers, which are indeed a good source for deeper study. However the overview Matt provides here is also interesting.
Thank you for the video! Content and Keywords are relevant, so far so good, but I would love to see the algorithm behind all this:) and the development.
Hey, nicely done. No trouble holding my attention, informative, interesting, motivating. Answers big questions about the new way we live and learn. Maybe future shock won't be so bad.
+glass joe There is no easy way to explain it, but to my understanding you will need 3 different codes 1) a Spider crawler. 2) A ranking algorithm 3)A code to dump the information into JSON (or something related like XML) for displaying the result onto a webpage. There is a tonne of material online for each of these code and I would recommend that you use python to implement them as it has alot of built in libraries (You can use whatever language you are comfortable with). I hope this helps !
Great. I want to learn more about how Google works. Interesting when he mentioned about the 200 factors, and I think about it and indexing: what about Bayesian networks?
appox how much is the size of index at google now? I have an app where i have indexed about 2 billion documents ~= 8TB of data and the index size is around 60gb.
hey! i'm new in the world of internet and have search many times on google how google get websites data of old and new created websites but i don't found better results for this . and i want to know about it i want to know that How google get data in his database automatically or you hire people to put the websites data into your database? if automatically then how please answer me please i am waiting.
Hi Matt could you please clarify "the more people who link to you and the more reputable those people are"... When you say Link to you, does this mean exclusively cases where another site has a link to your site? So if I had a link from my site to lets say LinkedIn, it would see that as another site linked to ours? if that makes sense? thanks
Hi, I want to know if you can help me with a seminar homework that I have to do, and I can't think of anything on the topic "Can Google find all the information you are looking for?". Please I really need your help !!! :( :((
Try to make Google search algorithm underatand that when a query includes "in Tamil", "In Telugu", "In Bengali", "in hindi" (like "in Spanish") etc that user is requesting results in those languages, but not in English. You have around 1 billion people in the world speaking these 4 languages.
As always when it comes to seo content is king, once that is in play then the rest is easier. Ok you need quality inbound links, but that is easier once you have quality content. Structured in a nice clean manner to make Google's job easier, which also allowes the site visitor to get to the page they are looking for.
they say they download the whole web data now who gave the access to all webdata? on which platform, what was the coding prototype to so. i mean lets say my website have a host and my website is on that host and my website have a domain , if you type my domain you can access to all my information so how its work they scan al domains? how did they found the data?
Thanks Matt. That was was helpful. And for dear Google lover RobervH I would like to recommend to search & watch for "How Search Works" uploaded at Google you-tube channel . which from Matt cutts only.
I remember explaining to angry customers why their rankings fluctuated after a website update. Oh google, we've been together for so long, I forgot how good you danced! Classic! Brings back nothing but pain!
Hi Matt, could you please explain how Google's alerts system works? is it the same logic as the Google Search algorithm or is it some other logic. And on what basis a person is getting notified is it the page ranking algorithm or some other triggering technique?. This is an amazing video, Thanks for sharing it.
It doesn't work. They don't send out notifications. No point of even having a notification bell because like half your subscribers don't get an alert. Just missed out on half a livestream because apparently the notification bell means go fuck yourself.
Could have made the video 7:30 mins shorter by just saying, "The site pays us more to have their result float to the top! (drop marker, exit stage right)" But seriously, love you, Google.
Great stuff Matt! It's nice to watch some longer and more technical videos :) But I must say that I'm a bit frustrated about you mentioning "PageRank" over and over again in this video.. No wonder webmasters obsess about it..

I would LOVE a 10+ hour seminar made by you on this topic! :)
Phantastic Matt, I'm very glad you answered my question in this length and it really helps me to understand the indexing process better!

The real question is how does it do all this so quickly and in under a second?
actually it is a simple list search with strings and computer engineers refined list searches since the dawn of computing.

Google is a big advertiser. They direct the flow to adds that pay the most.
Well, you don't need to click them if you don't want to
The video might be old but relevant still and I think the fundamentals would remain relevant for the days to come.
Thanks Matt, I really enjoyed watching all the information as it flew right over my head.
Great.
On Google Moderator, there you can ask questions to Matt, I think normally once a year.
Hi Robert, where did you ask the question?
To sum it all up, Google looks at the volume of incoming links a site has, and then ranks them in that order. That's the simple version!
Excellent presentation of a complex topic in simple terms. Kudos! You are fantastic.
Excellent quick lesson on Google search and ranking
Hello
I just create my Console account
But i can't see the crawl options
Matt the genius at work again.
Page Rank is a better measure of optimization and know about how this happens is fundamental!
So is this page rank thing the reason when i type in a specific question into google I get results to "popular" websites instead of absolute relevance to the specific question i asked? Google is really going downhill. Do not rank my pages. That's my job
+Bizentin Well good luck with Bing or other search engines then. Haha

What should I have to do to show my website in Google search results...
Hi very nice information you shared with us. I am new to this field. Please let me know what to do to be expert?

This is the best explanation for this topic that I've watched so far. Thanks for this!
Are the indexes and the page ranks mirrored between the datacenters around the world or is the search result different depending on your location?
Well let's just say that typing in a search on Google.fr will give you different results than Google.co.uk
Thank you for the video! Content and Keywords are relevant, so far so good, but I would love to see the algorithm behind all this:) and the development.
how long does it take to get adsense back if your account has been deactivated from improper activity ?

This video has given me solutions to my queries.

thanks ... wanted to know how it's look in terms of software and interface... but thanks
a think it would look like a programming IDE, cause the job is probably done by writing complex code, not by messing with user-friendly interface.
Will crawling keep getting faster?
Matt teaches very well. Thanks for this helping video.
