The industry is over saturated. Streaming services are like dating apps. Everyone is swiping for the next thing. People treat art as content and not as art. Why spend time with a property and anchor your identity in it when you know it loses its relevance within a week.
I would definitely say this is one of your best work. So another thing I would like to add is I don't remember where I heard this from but one of the reasons we are in this current state of rot and stagination with are various medias is the near death of physcial media. Basically studios were more willing to be more experimental with their stuff is because DVDs, CDs and physical copies of games would sell very well. So even if you had something that flopped in the first couple of months, eventually due to sales pilling on, companies would eventually make their money back. But now that streaming has taken over, companies don't make as much money as they used to so, they are not willing to make a lot of risks or diversify the various genres. Again I can't remember where it came from and probably not the best sourced but it does help explain some things that happened in the last decade.
This might sound pompous. I mean, it is. But the older I get the more I realise the average person isn't all that interested with interfacing with the world beyond the most shallow way. That's why film studios and game developers are not plunging huge amounts of money into risky projects. Because, by and large, the public don't want media to challenge them. They want whatever nice smooth digestible pebble is being presented to them by the most surface level promotion. 99.9% of the public aren't watching 20 minute long think pieces on the decline of modern media. A new Marvel film will do gangbusters even if it's 100 times shittier than an original independent movie... because it's Marvel... superheroes go brrrrr.... vapid fun for the whole family. Occasionally I'll speak to someone at work, and they'll surprise me because they read interesting novels or watch interesting films or listen to some obscure underground music regardless of genre when I pretentiously thought they wouldn't. But that's the minority.
To be f**king honest. Indie animation is amazing. And actual studios are just popping it out to make a quick buck. And for myself, i want to make my own series or something of this. :3
A great, well done video! While the state of entertainment in current times isn't great due to corporate attitudes, audience expectations and changing trends in tech and viewing methods like streaming, I try to find and latch onto the golden glimpses of hope that pop up every now and then, whether it's great underrated shows like Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur and Hilda, the occasional great NEW Nintendo game like Pikmin 4, Mario Bros Wonder or the surprisingly loaded assortment of indie gems like Pizza Tower (and upcoming stuff like Bits n' Bops, Plucky Squire, Antonblast and Rift of the Necrodancer). Those small lumps of joy within an ocean of corporate greed are reminders of why I love media to begin with since they show that the artists and designers involved can still turn out great stuff in spite of the overlords' restrictions. The CEOs may be getting greedier and making dumber decisions with their money, but we as consumers should be able to show them what we want. If something looks like it'll be a banger, support it and bring it to the attention of others for them to hopefully do the same.
Wokeness is NOT the only factor killing (western) entertainment. It is, however, the largest factor by a good margin and it is perhaps the one common factor across all mediums which explains the decline.
The more people claim that wokeness is "not" ruining entertainment, the more obvious it becomes that it IS. It's the elephant in the room and I get that it may be ideologically uncomfortable for leftists to talk about it. Nevertheless, it is happening and it has been happening for about a decade as of this post.
If mainstream entertainment is going downhill, so be it. Indie filmmakers will just have to work harder to give us the entertainment we deserve.
Same here
