- Michael Schumacher (Mercedes GP Petronas), will be celebrating yet another historical first at the Grand Prix of Spa-Francorchamps: Twenty years after his debut in the premiere division of his sport, the 42 year old is still racing as an active driver.
His star launched its incredible ascent on 25 August 1991. On 28 August 2011 it will truly shine in gold.
Helmet manufacturer Schuberth will present 7-time world champion Michael Schumacher with a special helmet to commemorate the day in grand style -- with 21-carat gold plating.
This Movie shows the "Making of" this very special helmet, plated with 21-carat gold from applying this rare metal to the final assembly by our Schuberth race mechanic.

It must be really special to see your creation on the track worn by Michael Schumacher
i had the oprtunity to be in the chinese GP in 2011 and see Schumacher racing
passing by.. was a special feeling as a race fan to see the legend

I was there 2006, watching him catching Fisichella and Alonso for the win. Too bad he got an engine issue while leading the next race and lost the title.

Probably one of the best one off helmets in F1... along with Vettel's helmet at the Japanese Grand Prix,Kimi's 2013 James Hunt tribute helmet and Lewis Hamilton's helmet for his last race with McLaren. This definitely is amongst them.
I always liked Vet's Singapore lids.

The big Chinese character on the dragon means "Strength," and the four Chinese characters by either sides are the names of Michael's family members. Left-top: Gina, left-bottom: Corinna, right-top: Mick, and right-bottom: Michael.

i said it because the F1 helmets offer you the best possible protection you can get, not because it is gold plated or anything
yes he had a helmet, but it was a skiing helmet, obviously not even close to the protection an F1 helmet can offer you

dimos k I tend to agree with you on this point. Arai helmets (which I assume are the ones used by Formula 1 drivers) are known for their strength and durability. Not to mention skiing helmets don't have a chin piece. Your face is basically open to the elements.
Sander Kamp every driver picks the brand of his choice. I see a lot of them using Schuberth helmets. Shumi was using Shuberth too
What's with sticking stickers and vinyl - wearing fabric gloves that give off fibers? That Petronas decal is full of bubbles and imperfections - really spoils an immaculate piece of craftmanship.

+noxed11 its called a hand made. these guys are professional. how perfect is a perfect. do watch other F1 helmet or other custom hand made vids to understand that.
+knddexterutube handmade doesn't mean making obvious mistakes on high value items. That is not perfect - perfection is in the details if you're playing in that elite class. If you've done more than one previously, you should have learnt that wearing those gloves is a no-no with decals, yet the guy just leaves it and is happy with it - not cool. That is an amateur mistake on an otherwise fantastic looking product. He could easily have pulled it off after seeing the mistake and put a new decal on without the gloves.
noxed11 yup i done it many times when i was working at custom paint shop in my prev job. we can argue on this 4ever. but one thing 4sure is that to work for F1 or anything related to it is ONE HELL of a job! n i leave the perfectionist part to you.

I was going to say a lot of detail went into this helmet till i saw such a shitty finished edge at 11:46 on that snap in top cap then it looked as if the photographer had notice it and panned away never going back to that area again.
That cap is made of plastic and that edge surface is not smooth as the top, that is how it is supposed to look unless you apply plaster to the edge, sand it and paint before the finish,
@@viannarts True but it looks like you was doing such a great looking job on the whole helmet except for that edge. And by not taking the time to sand that edge down smooth and gave it the same amount of detail as you were with the rest of the helmet just done more harm than good for the quality of work. think if you had an item in the body shop to do a great paint finish on it and they did give you the finish you wanted. Till you and your passenger opened the doors to leave but now you notice the door jams look like hell. Do you think any excuse would make it right since it wouldn't have taken that much before hand to sand the ruffness out before the painting? But its yours and your happy then thats all that counts right?

Looks great - just wondering, why is MSC the only Schuberth F1 driver using the old helmet RF1.8, all others use the current SF1 model?

He really does deserve a gold helmet. 7 world championships, 20 years in the sport. Sure, he didn't win at Spa. But he started from dead last and finished in 5th. That says quite a lot in itself.

Imperfections and irregularities everywhere in that gold leaf. They should have made some super fine gold dust and mixed it in with clear coat then sprayed it on the helmet.
i think thats the whole purpose of this hand-made gold plating.
to look "hand-made"
if it was sprayed on it would lose some of the uniqueness in my opinion.

To say Schumacher is the best driver of all time is stretching it. Probably hand that trophy to Senna. But I still love both drivers and what they bring to F1.

Really cool craftmanship - it's even more cool now when I read that gold isn't just paint but 21-carat gold plating. Wow! It's a really nice gesture from Schubert for one of the greatest drivers of all times.
@lazerpod66 The big deal is that driver 12 years his elder came from dead last to 5th place, a feat fare more impressive than buttons drive from 13th (just two places higher than schumi, ya know).

Strongly disagree. This video shows craftsmanship of any typical spray painter/panel beater. Look at how scuffed and inconsistent it is at 6:26 and it remains like that after the clear coat.
It basically consists of laying down a base, then some vinyl for stencils, gold leaf, remove stencils and clear.
Just because it spins around at the end, doesn't mean it is anything special. it is typical work, not 'amazing craftsmanship'

Yeah was a decent recovery in that race (Spa 2011) especially after his wheel fell off in qualifying ! If only his mechanics would of put the same level of detail into his wheel nut as the guys on this video did into his helmet then he might of even got a podium that day rather than 5th he managed ! But as it stands all he has to show & Add to his collection from his return is one lonely maiden podium pot that he did finally manage to get at Valencia 2012.
Yes! Wheel fell off agin in China 2012, a tool was forgotten in his airbox in Monaco 2012, countless mechanical failurs in the first third of the 2012 championship season and Montreal 2011 was stolen from him through the Red Flag.
I recently started using gold leaf on some of my projects and I have a question that hopefully you can help me out with. if I wanted to spray a water based paint out of an airbrush on top of the gold leaf, what do I need to prep the gold leaf for paint on top of it?? obviously I cant sand the gold leaf so do I use a adhesion promoter or do I not need anything and simply spray on top of gold leaf and the paint will stick???????? thank you in advance for any advice

@StarComRules As harsh as this sounds, Senna just died at the right time for him to seal his legacy in some peoples eyes as the best driver ever to live. If he stayed alive he would of been beat in close battles with prost etc. Its like saying Schumacher dying(god forbid) before Alonso began to beat him i guess ... I love both drivers as well ... they both did everything to win whether it was fair or not, both did cross limits, had the love, passion and determination and forever will be legends
@samothsamothsamoth schumi deserved what he got, simple as that .. i mean when luck isnt on his side and he ends up loosing a nose or something everyone begins to hate, but for once when luck is on his side and he actually does a great job in an inferior car people can't seem to compliment it because they think he is sitting in a ferrari which took so many years to develop before it became a winning car which dominated for so many years.
What gets me is that after the gold plating laid in, meticulous razor cutting, perfect spraying -- then a cheap looking, duct-tapesque Petronas sticker is slapped on imprecisely at the end.
Like all the other decoarative elements of the helmet, why not give the worker a decal shaped to fit the curved space it is to go on so it's not overlapping the other parts of the visor and such?
I'm not usually so picky, but this just seemed so odd given the rest of the quality control in the video.
@86ntx86 Welcome mate. I did translate them all. The four little Chinese characters on the left and right sides (the ones above and beneath the seven stars) aren't Chinese words and have no meaning, they are simply names written in Chinese characters, Chinese characters which have a similar sound to the original name.
