Sheldons biggest and most off-putting problem is his superiority complex-- that is to say, because he has superior intellect, he believes that makes him superior to all others in all ways, whilst completely ignoring his overt lack of social skills and EQ, even Penny is better at dealing with people but he doesn't value it. That superiority complex leaves him baffled as to why his endeavours to enlist the help of others can fail miserably. He thinks too highly of himself to be able to see and acknowledge his enormous flaws in other areas. THAT'S why sheldon sucks. Not because he HAS social issues- because he thinks he's perfect and has no flaws.
That's part of his charm. Under all that (mostly true) psycho-babble you've just articulated, Sheldon _isn't_ unkind, or mean spirited. The way he showed his humanity at the Nobel award ceremony, to his friends was very touching. I, personally, would consider it an honor, pleasure and CERTAINLY an adventure to know such a person...
