I had Norovirus on a Cruise Ship 🤮 Here's What Happened!

  • I have been living on cruise ships for over 3 months now. This is the first time I have been sick. Unfortunately, my first sickness was the dreaded Norovirus. In this video, I describe what it’s like to have Norovirus on a cruise ship. I talk about not only the symptoms but the cruise ships response to having an ill and contagious cruise passenger with Norovirus.

Just so you know, Tricare Overseas is who you send your bill to before filing your travel insurance claim. Takes about 3 weeks to get a payment. Also had what I now think was Norovirus on Enchanted. I ended up so sick and dehydrated, had to get an IV in medical on day 4 of my illness (along with medications). My bill was $800, but was worth every penny. I enjoyed the rest of the trip immensely. I also thought that the medical staff was great, professional and caring.

I knew Tricare covered overseas--as opposed to Medicare--but I never would have thought of sending them an onboard bill. Thanks for letting us all know.

I was concerned you had gotten sick when you hadn’t posted a video. Good to hear you are much much better👏🏼.
The thing is when you craved the watermelon it is rich in potassium and watermelon is a great natural electrolyte…two things that were good for your body after being sick, and even though you had been drinking water the watermelon hydrated your body. Water should be sipped when nauseous or it can cause you to throw-up.
The cruise ship was excellent taking care of you, & cleaning/sanitize your cabin probably better than being at a hotel.
Thanks for sharing your experience..and once again glad to hear you are on the other side of this illness.

My sister was on a princess cruise a couple months ago, and had a similar experience with the virus. They prescribed her medication’s, but she wasn’t able to keep them down. So the medical staff came back and gave her a shot. That did help her, and she was finally able to get some sleep. But when she checked her charges, she was hit with a $40 fee for the shot. When she called and asked if it could be removed since she got sick on their ship, they agreed and remove the charges. Just something they keep in mind. If the charge is there, it’s possible to reason with them.

As a person who had neuroviris on a cruise, I really appreciated your account of this horrendous experience. My experience was on Carnival, and as a result of my illness I lost 20 pounds over the next several months during and after the cruise. As a result my A1C fell from 6.9 to 6.6 and my diet is more healthy. Hell of a way to do that, I must say. Thanks so much for the video. --HD

So glad you're feeling better. I feel your pain...literally. Three days into our 2017 world cruise I came down with it. It's funny that I thought it was food poisoning at first as well. Then I felt a little better before it really hit. We had Imodium and other meds so didn't need anything from the medical center. One mistake I think you made is not calling them sooner. If you didn't have Imodium or the like already it would have helped taking it earlier in your illness. I was on HAL but of course they had the hazmat guys too. It was weird having that going on in your cabin. When I was finally released from quarantine they told me they had deactivated my cruise card (and would now reactivate it) so I was on double secret quarantine and didn't even know it.
Many people who have had it told me they too felt sick, then a little better (going to dinner, theater, etc) before really getting sick. That must be how it spreads so easily on a ship.

    • @30AndAWakeUp
      @30AndAWakeUp  ปีที่แล้ว +2

I am glad that you recovered from that illness. Do you have any more videos of your cruise experiences coming up anytime soon? These videos, specifically on your cruise experiences, have been very informative. I want to do this one day, cruise the world and enjoy the inclusive amenities on different ships. So please keep posting! Thanks!

So glad you are feeling better now. I’m going on Caribbean Princess on Sat, April 29 for a 14 day cruise. I’m hearing they are still dealing with this virus. Good to hear if one is sick on turnaround day, they don’t make you leave. I’ll be sure to bring all those meds with me next week.
I was on her in Jan 2023 when they had an outbreak of it also. I was already staying in my cabin with a head cold half way through the cruise. Crossing fingers and toes I get to make this trip unscathed.
Talking about medical cost, I had a medical issue with my blood pressure on my April 2nd cruise on NCL. Spent 3 1/2 hrs in MC and it cost $3500. Thank goodness for Travel Insurance.
    Happy Cruising!!!

Wow. Just ... wow. So glad you're feeling better. I like Princess and got sick once, on an Alaskan cruise. Just a cold - I think I was run down from all the stress of planning and packing and nearly missing the ship. I did miss Glacier Bay on the cruise. During this video I went from saying "Never again!" to thinking, "Well, they took pretty good care of you. Maybe I could chance it." I don't know if I'll cruise again, but I thank you for this informative video.

    Hi Kevin!
Glad you're over that! Sounds like a night-mare. As a Canadian, I've heard about those horrific charges if you need medical assistance, although I suspect those huge bills only apply to being in the ship's actual medical facility. Probably, the cruise lines consider Noro-virus as something of a cost of doing business, and medications, outside of the US are often much cheaper to aquire. Nonetheless, I'm glad you were treated so well.
After gastro- intestinal bugs, some of the best foods to eat include greek yogurt and broccoli (probably not together tho...). The yogurt helps the lining in your digestive tract, and broccoli has been described as an intestinal/ microbial "scrubber". I've personally found both of these helpful in recovering from food-borne illness.
    Thanks for the great info,again!
    Cheers!..from North Vancouver

I just came across your video and I have to say I loved all the details. We always sail with NCL and last cruise my boyfriend got so sick we think from drinking the water in Dominican Republic (he was so dehydrated from walking around and sugar was low..it was a bad and desperate situation) anyway he got so sick as you did and we were told just to see the medic on board to be evaluated would cost $200! You made out like a bandit! NCL could learn a thing or two from Princess in this case. Thanks again for such an informative video. Glad it all worked out for you👍

Kevin, sorry to hear you got it, and that you had it so bad. Now I know why we were never able to meet up and share our military/law practice stories: we were each suffering with our own respective cases of noro -- because I caught it, too. My symptoms began on Wednesday morning (the 19th) after we came back aboard in Belize. The first 2 days were really rough. Like you, it started with the bowel issues, but by late night of that first night, it had progressed -- and I was also dealing with extreme dizziness, a horrible, nonstop headache, body aches, chills, fever, and then nausea and some vomiting (not nearly as much as you). Thank goodness every one in our family each had our own inside cabin, so I could safely self-quarantine. Thankfully I had also packed lots of meds to help control the symptoms: Imodium for diarrhea, Tylenol and Advil for aches and fever, Meclizine for dizziness, and Emetrol for nausea and vomiting. Like you, the only position in which I was reasonably comfortable was laying on my side in the dark, just staring at my TV and dozing in and out. My husband would periodically knock at my door to see if I needed anything, but I was feeling too sick to eat anything. All I consumed for 2 full days was sips of sodas from my minibar that I allowed to go flat. I barely slept for 3 nights. We disembarked on Saturday, and I just stayed on the sofa all weekend. I am finally feeling almost all better, but it has taken much longer than the 1-3 days they say noro usually lasts. Here's to us both feeling better and to maybe meeting up another time.

I’m so glad you’re feeling better! I’m very impressed with how Princess handled this! I’ve had norovirus on a cruise, and it’s definitely no fun. I now always take some capsules of Activated Charcoal in my medicine bag, and take at the first sign of those bubble guts- works for food poisoning too. I also always take some electrolyte packs with me to replenish after bouts of vomiting/ diarrhea. I think that is why your body was craving the watermelon- it needed the potassium.
