As a mother, I agree with Gabby. That principal was taking it too far. If it was a habit of Juanita's to use profanity I would agree to the punishment, but not for a first offense.
@Matt S Yes, profanity. Children don't need to use curse words, they don't even understand them. They will learn "how to" soon enough. And you learn to communicate your emotions much better if you have to use the proper words to articulate sorrow or anger instead of just swearing. Swearing limits the active vocabulary immensely. That being said, of course punishment for a slip is completely over the top. A reminder not to swear should do it for kids and if they don't stop maybe no desert after dinner. However, just letting them use whatever words they want is NOT a good idea, children need to learn when what words are appropriate. By letting them swear like pirates (and trust me, they WILL) you will raise yourself a vulgar next generation totally oblivious to how coarse they sound. And we will lose a lot of useful words along the way because a f*** pretty much substitutes any word. Plus you will very probably lose the effect of swearing as well.
